'man nmap' then.
Description : Nmap is a utility for network exploration or security auditing. It
: supports ping scanning (determine which hosts are up), many port
: scanning techniques (determine what services the hosts are
: offering), and TCP/IP fingerprinting (remote host operating system
: identification). Nmap also offers flexible target and port
: specification, decoy scanning, determination of TCP sequence
: predictability characteristics, reverse-identd scanning, and more.
There exists a graphical frontend to nmap, a.k.a. zenmap.

An old Cable router that I now use as a network switch, and when I installed my new Netgear router about 6 months ago, I stupidly set it to the same address as that old cable router. So it's surprising that I haven't noticed any problems before. I've now fixed that problem, and I'm going to see if my 32bit Linux box now works properly, (but 1st I have to get it up and running again, as my latest attempt at configuring the tV-Output didn't work). Thanks. Richard.

Right. Just to confuse the issue even more, I just tried route-n on my 64 bit machine, and got the same result as with my 32 bit machine. So perhaps this strange output is normal?? as this machine doesn't seem to have any networking issues.

OK I just tried something different, which completely changes the problem. My 32 bit machine was connected via an 8 port switch. I suddenly thought perhaps there might be something strange going on with that switch. So I've temporarily connected a Cat5 directly from my 32 bit machine to my router, and now the networking works perfectly. So it looks like there was no problem with the network setup on my 32bit box, but a problem with my network switch. This is a bit strange, and I may have to try and solve it at some point, but at least now I can connect my 32bit box to the internet, and apt-get should work now. Thanks. Richard.

I spoke too soon, it has suddenly decided to stop working again Grrrrrr..... I used apt-get to install telnetd, but wasn't sure whether it had installed properly, so I restarted the whole system, but after a system restart the system then failed to see the internet. This problem is so bizare, and it's driving me up the wall. Grrrr.... Richard. Right, perhaps I'm getting somewhere now. I disconnected everything from my router except for the 32bit linux box, and my laptop (which connects wirelessly). Then I restarted everything, and it now seems to be working properly. So perhaps the whole problem was something to do with my router not being able to handle everything that was connecting to it. I'm thinking perhaps it might be the torrent client on my 64bit linux box that might have been creating the problem. Not sure exactly why my 32bit box was the only machine affected, perhaps because it's just not quite as powerful as the other machines on my network. If I'm right about this, then I'll probably just have to shut everything else down whenever I need to update my 32bit box via the internet. Now hopefully I can get on with figuring out my TV-Out configuration. I've now managed to log into my 32bit box from my laptop using Winscp. The reason for wanting to do this is that when I try to amend the xorg.conf on my 32bit box, I tend to end up with a blank screen, so I needed another way to access it, without having to crash out by switching it off. Right now to try and configure the TV-Output. Thanks. Richard.

Thanks everybody for all your comments. However nobody seems to have come up with anything I haven't already tried. I was hoping I would hear about some other configuration options hiding somewhere, which I didn't know about. At the moment I'm coming to the conclusion that this Linux box is just a lemon, it's been giving me problem after problem, and this networking problem just seems to completely defy all logic. I think I'm going to try Plan B instead. I've ordered a 2nd hand XBox and I'm going to try and implement my front end on that instead. Thanks. Richard.

On Thursday, May 5th, 2011 14:59:26 +0100, Richard Evans complained: > However nobody seems to have come up with anything I haven't already > tried. But you did not report the results. Do you think we are mind readers or have a crystal ball? So are you now saying you no longer want help with this problem? Because there are so many permutations, this sort of problem has to be solved methodically, step by step, something you seem unwilling to do with any of your requests for assistance. Apparently yet another case of asking for help, then throwing in the towel when you do not get an immediate fix ... Seeing as you claim you can ping your router from the 32bit, my next suggestion would be to try traceroute with an external IP address to see if that indicates where the link in the chain is failing.

OK Ignore that comment, call it a moment of frustration, as I had already tried all sorts of combinations including every conceivable way of pinging things. I wouldn't exactly say I'm looking for a quick fix, as this MythFrontEnd has been giving me grief for months now, so I do get frustrated with it from time to time. (or quite a lot actually). I'd love to be able to just hand it all over to a Linux expert, but haven't been able to find one. Actually I think I've more or less solved the networking issue now. I think something else keeps overloading my router, probably the torrent client on my other machine. Next, back to the frustration of trying to figure out the TV-Output configuration. That is something I seem to have spent hours trying to figure out, but still don't have the 1st clue what I'm doing. Which is extremely frustrating, but I suppose I have no choice other than to keep trying. Thanks. Richard.

Traceroute should reveal where the connection goes dead. Using a real hostname instead of an IP address and deleting the starting entries to protect the guilty .. traceroute mx02.eternal-september.org traceroute to mx02.eternal-september.org (188.40.43.213), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets 3 * * * 4 * * * 5 decix2-gw.hetzner.de (80.81.193.164) 82.984 ms 87.084 ms 89.945 ms 6 hos-bb1.juniper2.fs.hetzner.de (213.239.240.243) 108.024 ms hos-bb1.juniper1.fs.hetzner.de (213.239.240.242) 76.811 ms 38.044 ms 7 hos-tr1.ex3k2.rz10.hetzner.de (213.239.227.131) 44.765 ms 45.714 ms hos-tr4.ex3k2.rz10.hetzner.de (213.239.227.227) 46.292 ms 8 mx02.eternal-september.org (188.40.43.213) 55.330 ms 56.392 ms 57.113 ms > Next, back to the frustration of trying to figure out the TV-Output > configuration. You need a small xorg.conf so that you can see the wood and not get distracted by all the tree and then add the appropriate resolution and maybe a modeline if necessary.

I'll have a play with that at some point.
So would I be able to type in traceroute pop3.tiscali.co.uk, instead of
using ping?

I'm thinking I might try copying in the configuration file near the
bottom of this web page,
http://www.openchrome.org/trac/wiki/Configuration
but replacing S-Video with YCbCr
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
HorizSync 30 - 50
VertRefresh 50.0 - 50.0
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "openchrome"
Option "ActiveDevice" "TV"
Option "TVType" "PAL"
Option "TVOutput" "S-Video"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Modes "720x576" "720x576Noscale"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Back in the days of CRT monitors people who used out of specification values sometimes caused their monitor to catch fire.

I just tried that configuration, and rebooted, and now I have just a text screen asking me to log in. It would seem that the graphical environment has failed to load. Could this because I have the wrong horizontal synchronisation and vertical refresh rate values. And if so how do I figure out what values I should be using? > > Back in the days of CRT monitors people who used out of specification > values sometimes caused their monitor to catch fire. My VGA monitor just comes up with a message saying signal out of range, or something similar.
