#835 — Scanner recommendations?

My long-serving Epson Perfection 1650 has died on me so I need a
replacement. I'm thinking of the Canonscan Lide 110 which is now
supported for linux. The only other possibility seems to be a combined
printer and scanner, but I don't need the printer and want something
that doesn't take up too much room. Any advice please?

It looks like it's supported by GPL code in the genesys GL847 backend in
the stable release of SANE. So, it should work well, most probably.

Beware, combined scanner/printers are usually not well supported by
Linux. e.g. HP LaserJet 100 color MFP M175nw scanner doesn't work
properly even though HP claim to support Linux.
If you don't need the printer or copy function, why would
you buy that anyway?

HP OfficeJets work perfectly as do the lower end HP All in Ones. I'm using
an OfficeJet with Fedora. For a stand alone scanner the Epson perfections
work, however you have you to download a driver. My girlfriend just got
the EPSON Perfection V30, it's running on a Fedora 14 system. I downloaded
the RPM and it works fine.

Epson specs Linux support as does HP for the All in Ones, Canon doesn't.
Also if you look on Newegg you will see reviews where they say that Canons
don't work with Linux.

I have two Canon LiDE scanners a 20 and a 35 and they are both supported
by SANE in my PCLinuxOS 4.6.5. They work great.

Well, I ordered a Canon Lide 110 because the sane site says that it is
completely supported and there is an entry for that scanner in my
/etc/sane.d/genesys.conf. But I have still cold feet about it because I
have come across posts from people who tried to get this scanner to
work with the genesys driver, admittedly a few months ago, but failed.
I'm really not sure what to do about this - can I rely on the sane page
or should I return the scanner unopened?

I don't know for OfficeJets, but, I download HP LaserJet 100 color MFP
drivers, and it has severe problems with the scanner.

1) Scanning on the flatbed with the hp-scan tool is slow as hell,
eating loads of CPU (probably because it's a python script). That's
unfortunate because I wanted to connect it to my server which is an old
K6-2 550 Mhz computer.

2) The SANE backend is fast, but don't support the ADF (Automatic
Document Feeder) at all. The hp-scan tool "supports" ADF, but outputs a
PDF file containing buggy pixels... It looks like the image is
stretched in a parallelogram and cut in several planes of pixels.

3) The SANE backend must be somehow buggy, as scanimage(1) works, but I
couldn't get any GUI frontend to work (xsane, xscanimage). Although
they can find the scanner, they fail to scan. Strangely, sometimes I
could get them to grab sheets in the ADF, but, they still couldn't
produce any image. Moreover, scanimage(1) through a network (with
saned), fail after a few seconds with an error "sane_read: Operation was
cancelled".

4) Scanning fail sometimes with scanimage(1), and fails always with GUI
frontends, but, unfortunately, when it fails, any further scanning,
fails with a message "Error during device I/O" until it's
unplugged/replugged from the USB port.

5) A closed-source binary blob is required for scanner drivers.

GENERAL ISSUES (due to crap firmware, not really drivers):
6) It's not possible to get any image that's not affected by JPEG
artefacts even when asking uncompressed raw monochrome data.

7) Although the printer works on Ethernet, the scanner function can
only work through a USB connection.

These two issues exist on Windows too. :)

The printer, as PCL or PostScript, works quite well.

For the record, my HP Deskjet F4280 combined scanner/copier/printer works
fine with Ubuntu.

OTOH, I have a couple of HPs (a Photosmart C4480 at work and a Photosmart
3210 at home) that work great with Linux. I'd even go so far as to say they
work better under Linux than under Windows, once you get past SANE's
interface oddities.

I've decided to go with the Canoscan for the reasons you cite. It's
annoying that there are now hardly any standalone scanners made these
days, at least at the lower end of the market. Until recently the Lide
100/110 wasn't supported by sane, but now it is (vuescan too), so I hope
it will work OJ.

I've sort of noticed that, without really thinking about it. You're
right, they have mostly disappeared.

I have a laser printer, I'd get another one if/when this one breaks down,
I want a separate scanner.

On the other hand, it's pretty easy to see scanner/printer combinations
lying on the sidewalk, and I assume they are tossed either due to space,
or the ink has run out of the printer, so one should be able to pick up a
free scanner fairly easily, albeit bulkier than needed. Just ignore the
printer part. If the first one doesn't work, bring home the next one.

I have an Epson scanner. Still works great. Why are you changing to
Canon, which is notorious for being linux non-compliant.

Whatever. I'd look at Brother and Samsung, in that order. I have an
old brother b/w laser printer that was linux compatible years ago.
They even have their own linux drivers for most of their stuff. As
for reliability, my printer has been through Hell, moved cross
country, dropped, been in car wreck, freezing storage fer 3 yrs, and
still works perfectly. I also once bought a really cheap Brother
fax/copier. Worked brilliantly for what it was and costing only $40.
The next printer or copier I buy will be a Brother, hands down.

I have a Canon scanner, not sure which model but it's at least six years
old. I never had a problem, once I overcame the issues of using USB for
the first time. I just picked one from the flyers that was what I was
willing to pay for. I had no idea at the time that Canon was supposed to
be problematic with Linux.

I've been using HP printer-scanner-copiers for a long, long time. Our
last HP, a 6210, nearly found itself scrapped within a couple of months
before the reset procedure was put on the web -- and then, in the
absence of actual records, seems like it lasted longer than any of its
predecessors. It eventually just wore out, and our new HP 4500 has been
working perfectly for a month or so now.

Thanks to everyone for replies. I have good confirmatory evidence from
someone on the Debiam users list that the Canon Lide 110 will work with
linux, but so does the Epson v330, for which I downloaded and installed
the linux software successfully. Hence my current dilemma: both scanners
seem suitable, but I suspect the Epson is probably a better machine (at
twice the price). Having had good experience with older Epsons in the
past I'm inclined to go that way, but it's a difficult choice given the
price differential.

The Epson Precision v30 works fine in Linux and it's pretty cheap. As far
as I can tell the difference between the 330 and the 30 is just the
inclusion of a slide scanner on the 330.

I recently selected the Brother DCP-9010CN. Only took a very minimal
set of tweaking to get working.

I'm using it over Ethernet, but I also had it working with USB.

I finally decided on the Epson Perfection V330. I installed the software
from Avasys. The scanner worked out of the box, both with the Avasys
stuff and with xsane.
