I have an Epson scanner.  Still works great.  Why are you changing to
Canon, which is notorious for being linux non-compliant.  

Whatever.  I'd look at Brother and Samsung, in that order.  I have an
old brother b/w laser printer that was linux compatible years ago.
They even have their own linux drivers for most of their stuff.  As
for reliability, my printer has been through Hell, moved cross
country, dropped, been in car wreck, freezing storage fer 3 yrs, and
still works perfectly.  I also once bought a really cheap Brother
fax/copier.  Worked brilliantly for what it was and costing only $40.
The next printer or copier I buy will be a Brother, hands down.
