right, they have mostly disappeared.

I have a laser printer, I'd get another one if/when this one breaks down, 
I want a separate scanner.

On the other hand, it's pretty easy to see scanner/printer combinations 
lying on the sidewalk, and I assume they are tossed either due to space, 
or the ink has run out of the printer, so one should be able to pick up a 
free scanner fairly easily, albeit bulkier than needed.  Just ignore the 
printer part.  If the first one doesn't work, bring home the next one.
