https://medium.com/backchannel/i-moved-to-linux-and-it-s-even-better-than-i-expected-9f2dcac3f8fb#.4t5j5h8a9 " On a spring day in 2012, I shut down my MacBook Air for the last time. From then on, my primary computing environment — at least on a laptop computer — was GNU/Linux. I was abandoning, as much as possible, the proprietary, control-freakish environments that Apple and Microsoft have increasingly foisted on users of personal computers. Almost four years later, here I am, writing this piece on a laptop computer running the Linux* operating system and LibreOffice Writer, not on a Mac or Windows machine using Microsoft Word. All is well. No, better than that — everything’s terrific. I’d recommend this move to lots of folks — not everyone, by any means, but to anyone who isn’t afraid to ask some occasional questions, and especially anyone who gives some thought to the trajectory of technology and communications in the 21st Century. Most of all, to people who care about freedom. "

The irony is that the author's angst is against surveillance, yet he chose to buy a Lenovo. Anyone want to check to see if the machine he bought was one of those ones with the spyware in the firmware? Or perhaps COLA's local anonymizer tool employing troll could offer some "how to" comments. -hh

It'll accomplish two things. One is to put those dirt bags out of business and secondly it'll be a wake-up call to other manufacturers to not spy on their customers. My issue with Lenovo was about 5 years ago before any of this spyware embedded in the BIOS nonsense. I bought a nice (small, light, powerful) laptop from them. About 1.5 years later the battery basically died. I couldn't find a replacement on their website so I emailed them. They eventually responded and told me they discontinued that model and don't have replacement batteries. If I want a new battery then I should buy one on eBay. That was my first and last purchase from Lenovo. -- I arrived at his house with only 65% battery charge on my Linux netbook, but *** 9 hours *** later when everything was done, it still showed one hours battery life remaining ! It was powering the external 1TB hard drive the whole time. Terry Porter and yet another miracle Linux device. Run Linux on a netbook and the laws of physics no longer apply to batteries. <l7mdnbqugv8jG_fRnZ2dnUVZ_qydnZ2d@netspace.net.au>

The 32GB RAM and vt-x allow for nice VM work, but build quality is not up to par. I had an IBM Thinkpad years ago and loved it.

The spyware nonsense is a good enough reason to avoid them. The sad thing is that I actually really liked the laptop that I got from them. It had a really good keyboard and I thought it was a very nice machine. Then right before the 2-year mark the battery died and they basically left me hanging. I could either buy a new laptop or get some cheap Chinese knock-off battery on eBay that'll burn my house down. Fuck 'em. The laptop is still alive today as a VM. I ran P2V and converted the physical machine to a VM. I don't do squat with it anymore but it's still around.

My wife's Lenovo laptop (purchased because she had a fondness for her old IBM Thinkpad), had a HD that died and hinges that basically left the panel hanging from the rest of the device. To say the least, it was pathetic. We bought her another Lenovo, but at least we were careful to get one with an SSD and very strong hinges. - -- Slimer EFF & OpenMedia member / IFAW, Mozilla & PETA supporter -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iQEcBAEBCAAGBQJWjEVCAAoJEIwFfgf/rr+u6UUH/RrOgCd1TCs1g37iYzcdjWaj Hew2r8KAU2a4wVNmU5s7H5zOxNVaXbggKdrctXEOfauhOV3G6yv/CBzSDdDYWyES gRpFbhh95hSxkIHr7owbvzlNUYvfOTktsqdb1wUrI6aQWEcGRykg7azF+aHL/5S3 UVC4GmUMKCOlDe2KhYaK57RULiCTGHQ/gL6OiXFU2OBY2uTsp51EFuDe8QUDJ59Z mQMaHLQEmMuPXh0a+FC30D13epLSbsQhRDxFpP3p69E3UTs9Kcz6h/lSWEW7vxui JAcLpR9HhKgvkj14NeiPA8PtMQ++VGZej6rt41PO4mfF2xxfw0WFFEFtSc6QLzI= =wrZS -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

These things are disgusting, and I won't defend Lenovo, but still they are Windows-only and don't affect my Thinkpad, which only boots Linux. I don't have a lot of praise for thinkpads other than RAM expandability for the price (at least as of three years ago). This one lost a keyboard column (8-i-k-,) after two years, and I've had to get by with a Logitech sitting on top.

I Moved to Linux and It’s Even Better Than I Expected Saying goodbye to Apple and Microsoft has never been easier, or so satisfying This is "funny": A few months ago, when Apple introduced its iPad Pro, a large tablet with a keyboard, CEO Tim Cook called it the “clearest expression of our vision of the future of personal computing.” That was an uh-oh moment for me. Among other things, in the iOS ecosystem users are obliged to get all their software from Apple’s store, and developers are obliged to sell it in the company store. This may be Apple’s definition of personal computing, but it’s not mine. To be fair, he also bashes Google a little. -- You will be awarded a medal for disregarding safety in saving someone.

The guy is a definite pansy. He is a pansy in other ways as well. Here is a statement befitting a stupid cunt: "There were too many rough edges, and for a long time Linux didn’t have enough applications to do what I needed. The complications were too much for my limited patience in everyday use." Rough edges? We cannot expect any great specificity from a journalistic retard. What applications were missing? There were none. He was just too damned stupid to discern the extreme utility that confronted him. What did he need to do? I can just imagine what that shallow dickhead does at his machine all day. " Good article but I have to mention one thing: it seems to be incredibly easy to get hardware working in GNU/Linux if a person runs a Macbook. I assume that it's because many of GNU/Linux's users use the operating system through that. As such, they've made an effort to support everything correctly. However, it's not the case for all computers and his experience doesn't extend to everyone. A student of mine last year also had a lot of luck with Ubuntu on his Macbook Pro. In fact, he ended up favouring it over OS X though that's not difficult considering how awful OS X is. - -- Slimer EFF & OpenMedia member / IFAW, Mozilla & PETA supporter -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iQEcBAEBCAAGBQJWi+o8AAoJEIwFfgf/rr+uyfQH/2Sc8QHWqTgAOpPNfP0a2/j/ DHE8vYYtG2bgxyUe8ig22rEnHFETFMym0DpmopfxIBTXyhTKi7IbVgdQDSsSajG7 wSHZ5rGHwE7BxEdZvPJwvud1OBwsA6fpGMIimSH8yx36TTDqQTG5ibGaF7VIoEXk ws1s3t8/Xin/PkcFdwYC2JWmMe6OWRrGqAtf0gQ2n9f/Ze6hF1ZS+Dws35thoGFr 9OjBmIF3FM/xQqCxw+7joY8FFXwx5VYt1RxMSWpQJLCN7DwtfJ2bNrAGBQ8sQoSx tc9cu4/gIe7wF/EY1BvsjysiqTKfSn7kMSAA2t1bMyXO6/nrim0vUUJDXVIX5h4= =36LN -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
