Somebody finally clued management in that they didn't need to waste
their money on a "support contract" for their Linux users. And I
can guarantee you that IT would far rather help one of their Linux
users who might be having trouble with something than to face the
malware grind in Windoze land, so this "talk to debian for support"
is complete bullshit.

Did you have a link to that? I didn't see it.

You got a link to that? If you take a look at this link for students
getting started there is no mention of Linux
https://uit.stanford.edu/service/computing/students

Same for faculty
https://uit.stanford.edu/service/computing/faculty

When it comes to software, no sign of any Linux support
https://uit.stanford.edu/service/ess/

And linked from all the links above for students and faculty.

The link is experience. Redhat "support" is a waste of money.
They force you to buy it. Nobody needs it. It's only ever
bought by managers who are required to have a support contract
in place. That's why there are so many CentOS installations.
Redhat support squad is like the Maytag repairman.

Do you think that IT does not support all the Linux installations on
the University systems? Who does, then? If you bothered to read the
links I posted, you would realize that much of the software is licensed
*only* for use on University computers. That means IT supports it.
It is also stated that their campus is full of Linux. Don't be a moron.
This is not even worth arguing about.

Once again (read it this time)...
https://uit.stanford.edu/service/softwarelic/linux
<quote>
Linux is an open-source operating system used by many units across
Stanford. There are a large variety of "flavors" of Linux; University
IT generally works with Debian, and Ubuntu. UIT provides local mirrors
of these versions of Linux for local Stanford users.
</quote>

If "IT generally works with Debian" I'm sure they are capable of
helping a professor out when needed. I also know from experience
as as a former Linux/Windoze admin that solving Linux problems is
*much* less of a headache than solving Windoze problems, so their
IT guys are not as likely to be "too busy" to help out a fellow
Linux user.

Our Linux desktops need nothing like the support of our Windows desktops.

On the other hand, there's a lot more Windows desktops around, because we
are largely a service company -- and it's kind of tough for one to give
tech support to a Windows user without sitting at a Windows desktop
oneself.

I like the idea of RH being like "the Maytag repairman". Hopefully they
can sustain it as a business model for those who truly need it, since
CentOS is so danged useful...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, RedHat is more of a support
company than a Linux distributor. Critical systems will require vendor
support, clearly Stanford aren't using anything critical or they are not
using RedHat - but they don't really say what they are using, the
critical email system seems to be running Microsoft products leaving
Linux doing a bit of web & database work I'd guess.

If, they support Linux, and it's a big if, their line on support would
not read:

<quote>
Product Support

Debian and Ubuntu Linux

Online support may be found through the open source communities, or
buying a support contract from a designated professional support service

Free Support:
Debian support
Ubuntu support

Paid Support:
Debian US consultants
Ubuntu services
</quote>

It would at the very least have some pointer to getting support from the
campus IT department, as it stands all they say is "Go get free support
from the forums or buy support because we don't support it"

They tell students unfortunate enough to use Linux that they are on their own and direct them to one of the most hostile communities known to exist on the internet.

The poor lack of Linux penetration into the desktop market is a direct
result of the Linux community and it's antics, lies and odd behavior.

Note that they are all using Mac laptops. Not a single bit of Linux in
sight. So much for your claim "CCRMA, an internationally renowned sound
and music research organization at Stanford, uses GNU/Linux exclusively"

Now crawl back down into your basement and play with your command line
and pretend you are in the 1980s, I'm sure there must be some more lies
and untruths you can come up with to amuse us.
