Excepting the first sentence, that entire paragraph is nothing but

Well, I'm sure we must be "hypocrites" because we are "suddenly OK"
with businesses being the primary contributors to the Linux kernel.

All based upon troll *lies* that we are "anti business" or "anti
success".

No. The important difference in the case of Linux is that even though
there may be a great proportion of developers on some corporate payroll
the final arbiter for Linux decisions is Linus Torvalds and only Torvalds.

If some large cohort of corporate lackeys says that things should be done
a certain way, Torvalds can, and many times has, tell them all to kiss off.

As long as Torvalds remains "untouchable" Linux will remain a great OS.

That's the essential difference.

Idiot. Torvalds has control (to a certain extent) about the kernel, and the
kernel alone.
He does not have *any* say at all about all the other stuff linux distros
are made of

You don't have the foggiest of knowledge about linux. And it shows

Jeff - if you posted this to COLA then it's not showing up on my end. Still
using your custom HTML client??

$10-million/year - didn't look it up but when you usually see a number like
that it's not "salary." It's salary and stuff like stock-options, bonus and
other "incentives." Either way, good for Linus. It's what a similar
positions pay at other companies and he's earned the $$$.

Linus is beyond the top 0.1% income level.

Ben Jacoby intentionally avoids facts and logic.
In his little dream world, I'm not the manager
of a 32 unit apartment building (nor a C++ programmer).

Yesterday, I strung a 75 foot ethernet cable
for one of my tenants. It costs $10:
http://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Cable-CAT5e-75-White/dp/B00161MNZW

Most cell phones can't handle WiFi properly,
even when 15 feet from the WiFi source.
Notebooks/Consoles are better, desktops are best.

Many of my ( young, Univ. of Wash. ) tenants don't have desktops;
but they've got gaming consoles.

In the entire world there are many more Richard Stallmans than people like
Linus making $10M a year.

32 units is a lot. Do you get a lot of people complaining about stuff?

Running internet cable can be really easy or real hard. It's a matter of
finding a good way to run it from end to end. Unfinished basements and
attics are easier than ceilings and walls.

Never had a problem with the phone Wifi. My desktop has a wired connection.

I''ve listed stuff on CL before. You just type or copy-paste the tags into
the edit box. You don't use your newsreader for that do you?

HTML is not a crime. Web sites with excessive javascript should be.

The latest iPhones handle WiFi OK, but others don't;
even so, it's not great -- I wouldn't use it.
A desktop with a decent WiFi adaptor works well.

All day, every day.
I move people into/out_of units; lots of turnover.
I do most of the work myself, without help.

Minimum wage, here in Seattle, is #13/hour this year,
$15/hour next year. Parking is $120/month.
Gas is $2.50/callon, I think (I don't drive).

I don't expect everyone here to be rich;
but, also, I don't expect them to think like Richard Stallman.

What's not working? I can tether my laptop through my phone to do SSH port
forwarding. If this works then I'd expect just about everything else to work
with phone wifi.

I owned more than one house in the past and did 95% of the work myself.
There's always plenty of work to do. You have 32 units and at least that
many tenants. I only had a wife and 4 kids and that was plenty to keep me
busy.

> Minimum wage, here in Seattle, is #13/hour this year,

I don't drive nearly as much as I used to so my gas bill is practically
nothing. The monthly train pass is $75 but the company pays for it. I paid
for the gas myself.

Why "through [your] phone" ?
Why not connect your laptop to the same WiFi source
that your phone is using ?

Most phones have trouble connecting to WiFi.

I should find a scientific study on this,
but I don't feel like it, not right now.

P.S. Gas is $2.50/gallon here, I checked.

Outside of Seattle, it's $1.60/gallon.

Everything is cheaper outside of Seattle,
more so than usual, so I'm having trouble finding renters.

It's not 108. It's 73 ('I').
Autocorrect is changing it. Delete the autocorrect entry for "i".

You are talking your ignorance, Mr. Relf. FYI, I
have a Samsung Galaxy S5 that I found on the roadside
a couple years ago. It was undamaged even though it
appears somebody wished to throw it over the bridge
into the water to collect insurance. It was locked
with a PIN number. I contacted the carrier to see
if they could notify the owner so I could return it
to her. (It was in a pink case that reeked of perfume)
The carrier was only interested in the SIM card number
so they could deactivate it. They weren't the least
bit interested in returning it to the owner probably
already having provided her a new one for free but
which she had to pay a 200 dollar deductible for.

So, I Googled how to reset it and did so. Of course
it wiped the slate clean and it booted up in original
factory condition. I removed the useless SIM and have
never used it with a carrier as a phone. Instead I
use it as a handheld computer and it connects to WiFi
easily and uses it quickly. I even installed an app
called *Talkatone* on which I can make voice or
text telephone calls over the WiFi. So, who needs
a stinking IPhone.

Jeff, if you were as smart as you claim to be you
would know that today's smart phones are really
all handheld computers with a phone app/SIM card
slot.

Android handheld computers are the best and the
world's most used.
