the desktop OS market to push proprietory "standards" so people are
afraid of being somehow "left out in the cold" if they choose an
alternative product.

like your Linux spellchecker failed yet again.

We ridicule the "alternative product" because it's not much of an
alternative. It works poorly, fixes a minority of bugs with each release
all the while introducing a ton more and often, like LibreOffice,
demonstrates that it is decades behind in terms of technology. Hell,
Linux itself still hasn't managed to get most of the computers to sleep
and wake properly (a known Linux kernel problem regardless of what lies
you tell). Linux and its software is as much an alternative to Windows
as a Fiat 500 is an alternative to a Porsche 911.

LOL - his stupidity is amazing. Most people have no idea what a file format 
even is. Poll 100 random people on the street and ask them about exFAT and 
watch the look on their face.

People who do understand file formats can format external drives however 
they want without feeling "left out in the cold" whatever the hell that's 
supposed to mean.

Most people are just happy that they were able to figure out how to
format an external drive. What filesystem it was formatted _to_ is a
mystery to them. Clearly, I would rather that the users of technology
have a lot more interest and understanding not only of _what_ they are
doing but what technology they chose but it seems that most of humanity
today is barely able to match their socks every morning.

I think most people would appreciate it if he was at least honest and
admitted that he doesn't use Linux but believes in advocating it anyway.

Some of the crapware is amazing to see in action.

* last year (early 2014) I changed the xfce 'start button' logo file 
from the default to a custom .gif I found online.  After I did that, the 
start button would disappear on each reboot, and you couldn't use the 
start menu at all.  Then 5-10 minutes later it would suddenly reappear. 
  No rhyme or reason to it.

* in Linux Mint 14, nearly 70% of the packages in the software center
   were listed as 'uncategorized'.

Actually, they'll feel left out in the cold when they pop that SD card
into their newly compiled Linux machine and the drive doesn't show up.
Now they can't copy their precious pictures off and they have no idea
why.
All they know is, the guy with the Macbook Pro was able to copy
everything perfectly fine.
