I've just added a new ipod to my PC iTunes, which already has two iPads on it. Installed with a simple "restore from last iPad backup". Worked fine. Now I want to put lots of music onto it; but not onto the iPads. How do I do this? Or might it be better to put it onto the lot? Ed

Or might it be better to put it onto the lot? when that device is connected, choose whatever music you want and then sync. itunes tracks each device separately. just because it was restored from another device does not mean it must always remain identical. it just starts off that way.

That's the case, then, for the two iPads as well? All I have to do is simply add stuff to each device's music library, and it doesn't propagate to the others? Ed

I can only find "add files (or folders) to the library" and that library is shared across them all. Ed

Select the device you want to manage in the left-hand side bar of iTunes under the DEVICES section. If the device does not appear there, then you don't have the device physically connected to the computer running iTunes, and you don't have WiFi Sync enabled for that device. Do either one to make it show up. 2. Click on of the tabs at the top (Apps, Tones, Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, Books, Photos) to manage what you want to manage for that device. 3. There is no step 3. : ) -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead. JR

It's what happens from there on that baffles me. It has "Entire music library" ticked (together with "include music videos" and "include voice memos"), and the line graph at the bottom shows "48.91 GB free". But when I move the tick to "Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres" the line graph changes to "15.85 GB free" and the video content accounts for the increase (about 35 GB). In addition I get boxes for p a a & g with all items unticked. Weird. All I can figure is that it's suddenly decided to include all the films that were on the iPad save but didn't restore to the ipod. The video contents problem is weird. I can't figure that. The only way I can figure is this, twisted and too torturous to do. 1. Add all the music I want to the library, but then I'd have to change the sync settings for all devices. 2. Change video settings for all devices (what and where?) Ed

In fact the playlist technique seems very intuitive and natural after doing it. I just gave the current music library a name, and changed the sync settings on all 3 devices. I was pleasantly surprised to see that what you told me about the misreported memory sizing proved true too. Now I can add playlists for whatever I want, with names like "Pink Floyd", "Led Zeppelin" and "Beethoven" and "Mozart". I think I have a rational explanation for the memory thing. I have a large library of films on the iPads, and when I restored to the ipod it just didn't take in the longer ones; but the sync settings remain "all". So then, it must have taken the lot into account to get its estimate, but at actual run-time ignored them. That covers my case, but not the ones you mentioned. Thanks a lot. Ed

Alternatively, you can simply select the device under DEVICES, click the Music tab at the top, and specify that you want all of a given artist to be synced to the device. That way you don't need to create any play lists, and you get the added benefit that if you add more albums / songs for that artist, they are automatically added to the device. The only reason I can think of for not doing it this way is if you don't want all of the songs for a given artist to be synced to the device. But for that situation, you can select specific *albums* to sync instead. iTunes is quite flexible in the options it gives you to select which music is synced. ; ) -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. The simplest way I've figured for "music" is to create separate playlists for each device within iTunes and then sync each device to their own playlist. I sync three. This works fine for me. Everything unchecked, once you select the device in iTunes, does not sync or do anything at all until you check it. Once you select a device in iTunes, everything you do only works on that device. If you want to do something related to a different device. Select "that device" within iTunes. It's really easy when you grok the concept that once you select the device within iTunes that you want to fool with, and although iTunes seems to remain the same, you are working on one device and all others are unaffected, and so are their settings. To further answer your points 1 and 2, you save audio, video, apps, etc. settings per device within iTunes as you like them with checking and unchecking. I have many apps in iTunes, but I only have the ones I want on each device. They are still all there in iTunes should I want to reload them into the device by checking and syncing them on the device. So are all of your music and videos. You have to seriously want to delete things from within iTunes in order to delete your ability to reinstall them on any of your devices, and it has to be done within iTunes, not on your device. It's simple magic. I don't understand it. It just works. leo
