Well, I figured that far myself. It's what happens from there on that 
baffles me.

It has "Entire music library" ticked (together with "include music 
videos" and "include voice memos"), and the line graph at the bottom 
shows "48.91 GB free". But when I move the tick to "Selected playlists, 
artists, albums and genres" the line graph changes to "15.85 GB free" 
and the video content accounts for the increase (about 35 GB). In 
addition I get boxes for p a a & g with all items unticked.
Weird. All I can figure is that it's suddenly decided to include all the 
films that were on the iPad save but didn't restore to the ipod.

The video contents problem is weird. I can't figure that.

The only way I can figure is this, twisted and too torturous to do.
1. Add all the music I want to the library, but then I'd have to change 
the sync settings for all devices.
2. Change video settings for all devices (what and where?)
