That just isn't true. Electing not to sync your computer's iTunes library with your iPad is a perfectly reasonable use case (even if it isn't yours) and it requires very little effort.

Which has nothing to do with it. I do not sync my library to iOS because there is no device that can fit my library. I sync certain playlists to my iPhone, and different ones to my iPad. So, for example, I installed 7.1beta which requires a backup, install, restore. At the end of this process I had EXACTLY the songs on my iOS device that I had before. But it is optional ON. You have to disable it to get the behavior you and Doug are describing. In fact, you have to go through rather a lot of hoops to get the behavior you are describing. The fact is, it someone backups their iOS device and then restores it, they will have the music and videos and books and apps and data they had on it before unless they take specific steps to prevent it. This is how it will work for nearly every one of the half a billion iOS users. The fact that it's two steps isn't relevant, especially since the sync step is absolutely part of the restore as that is what puts your apps back on the phone. Until you complete the sync, the restore is not completed. It even tells you that with a dialog something like "Your device software has been restored. Now your device will sync all your apps and content." >> The only thing I did was tell it "No, don't sync everything >> because it won't fit, just sync these songs instead." I also had a >> choice of "fill my device with random music from my library" which I >> didn't choose. > And others tell it "don't sync at all". That's their prerogative, too. And if they tell it not to sync, then it won't sync. And if they don't sync and they delete their music from iTunes then, yes, they cannot "backup" their music from the iOS device (well, it's marginally harder). But these are all choices someone has to make to consciously prevent the backup/restore from working as it is designed to. -- Strange things are afoot at the Circle K

All of these get > restored to the device. Nope, not during the backup restore phase, they don't. You're wrong. They get synced later, during the sync phase. And if you haven't ever synced to the computer in question, there is nothing to sync anyway. That's the entire point Doug is making, and you just refuse to see. At this point, we're talking in circles, so I'll go ahead and just let you have your last word. I'm done arguing about it. >> Nevertheless, syncing is in fact optional, and if you refuse to admit >> that, that's a personal problem only you can solve. > > But it is optional ON. Not many hoops, and not a lot of effort, as Doug has told you repeatedly. 2. The fact is some many choose to do this, whether you like it or not. > The fact is, it someone backups their iOS device and then restores it, > they will have the music and videos and books and apps and data they had > on it before unless they take specific steps to prevent it. Not a lot of hoops.
