Okay, noted.

I personally wouldn't consider checking a couple boxes to be all that
much effort, but regardless, that's not what is being debated here.

actually it is what's being debated, because that's exactly why it's
doing what it's doing for him. *he* disabled key functionality included
in itunes.

meanwhile, the rest of the world has no problem restoring music or app
data or anything else he claims isn't properly backed up.

That just isn't true.

Electing not to sync your computer's iTunes library with your iPad is
a perfectly reasonable use case (even if it isn't yours) and it
requires very little effort.

Which has nothing to do with it. I do not sync my library to iOS because
there is no device that can fit my library. I sync certain playlists to
my iPhone, and different ones to my iPad.

So, for example, I installed 7.1beta which requires a backup, install,
restore. At the end of this process I had EXACTLY the songs on my iOS
device that I had before. No more, no less.

Excellent news, and I'm happy for you.

But as I said it is both reasonable not to sync your music to your
iPad, and requires very little effort.

Those play lists come from your library, do they not? Therefore you have
chosen to sync at least part of your library from your computer to your
device. That's a choice one may or may not make. In Doug's case, he has
chosen not to do it. Why is this so hard for you to accept?

Not if you hadn't done the sync to begin with.

I do find it just bizarre how much trouble certain people have
accepting that others have different needs (or preferences, for that
matter).

nothing wrong with having different needs. nobody said one size fits
all.

what's bizarre is that you can't see that itunes won't do certain
things because of how you personally use it, which is not the way it
normally works for the rest of the world.

you are welcome to disable any or all of its functionality if that
works for you but you get to enjoy doing everything manually.

Because he has spent a lot of time complaining that iTunes will not
restore his music after a backup. iTunes *DOES* restore you music after
a backup unless you make a decision in advance to prevent it from doing
so.

>> So, for example, I installed 7.1beta which requires a backup, install,

It was completely transparent though, and the sync happened over WiFi
along with the apps getting synced.

>> device that I had before. No more, no less.

I didn't "do a snc" syncing music to an iOS device is the default
behavior. The only thing I did was tell it "No, don't sync everything
because it won't fit, just sync these songs instead." I also had a
choice of "fill my device with random music from my library" which I
didn't choose.

Actually, he hasn't complained about it. He has mentioned it, and you
guys have denied it, and he has re-asserted it. This has happened over,
and over, an over again, And it does not constitute complaining.

> iTunes *DOES* restore you music after

Nope. The restore is not what syncs music to the device. And what does
not exist on the computer cannot be synced to the device. No matter how
hard you try to argue, this remains true.

The point is restore is not sync, and if the music wasn't already on the
computer, nothing would be synced anyway. You seem to be unable or
unwilling to see this.

Nevertheless, syncing is in fact optional, and if you refuse to admit
that, that's a personal problem only you can solve.

And others tell it "don't sync at all". That's their prerogative, too.

he has complained about it, and also that it doesn't happen in the
first place, which it clearly does unless disabled which is why it
doesn't *for him and not for others.

yet when the user clicks restore, the restore process begins, and when
it completes at some point later in time, the music is on the device.

nobody said otherwise, however, since the music *is* on the computer,
it *is* restored.

sure, but if they do, they don't get to bitch when they lose data
because something wasn't backed up. it's their choice.

The reason I ask is that sometimes books will load during a synch and other
times I have to do a drag/drop to get them to load to the iPad. The Air has

If you plug your device into your computer, then when it appears on
the iTunes window, one of the tabs across the top contains preferences
for syncing.

But it is not true. Things not on the computer are restored as well,
purchased books, purchased apps, purchased music. All of these get
restored to the device.

No, I said that if you deleted your music from iTunes it would not get
put back on the device. That is the only way, however.

But it is optional ON. You have to disable it to get the behavior you
and Doug are describing. In fact, you have to go through rather a lot of
hoops to get the behavior you are describing.

The fact is, it someone backups their iOS device and then restores it,
they will have the music and videos and books and apps and data they had
on it before unless they take specific steps to prevent it. This is how
it will work for nearly every one of the half a billion iOS users.

The fact that it's two steps isn't relevant, especially since the sync
step is absolutely part of the restore as that is what puts your apps
back on the phone. Until you complete the sync, the restore is not
completed. It even tells you that with a dialog something like "Your
device software has been restored. Now your device will sync all your
apps and content."

>> The only thing I did was tell it "No, don't sync everything

And if they tell it not to sync, then it won't sync. And if they don't
sync and they delete their music from iTunes then, yes, they cannot
"backup" their music from the iOS device (well, it's marginally harder).
But these are all choices someone has to make to consciously prevent the
backup/restore from working as it is designed to.

Nope, not during the backup restore phase, they don't. You're wrong.
They get synced later, during the sync phase. And if you haven't ever
synced to the computer in question, there is nothing to sync anyway.
That's the entire point Doug is making, and you just refuse to see. At
this point, we're talking in circles, so I'll go ahead and just let you
have your last word. I'm done arguing about it.

1. Not many hoops, and not a lot of effort, as Doug has told you
repeatedly.
2. The fact is some many choose to do this, whether you like it or not.

Nobody but you and nospam are arguing this point. You've missed or
ignored a critical detail in this conversation.

Anyhow, I'm done here. Have fun!

That is not my experience. A list of installed apps gets restored,
for example, but not necessarily all of the installed apps. Some of
them end up needing to be downloaded again.

Also app data is sometimes restored, and sometimes not restored.

Wrong. I've indicated other ways already.

One preference setting. Not a lot of hoops.

then your experience doesn't match that of just about every other
itunes user.

normally, all apps and their associated data are restored.

in fact, data for apps that aren't restored is also restored, which is
why when you install one or more of those apps at a later point in
time, the old data is there.

> Also app data is sometimes restored, and sometimes not restored.

under what conditions was it not restored?

what apps were they and what data was not restored?

don't confuse personal data, which is unique per user and is always
restored, with generic data that is the same for every user and can be
regenerated or downloaded at any time so there's no need to bloat up
the user's backup with it. in some cases, that data can be huge.

exactly.

a user has to go out of their way (even if it's just a single click) to
make itunes *not* restore everything.

> The fact that it's two steps isn't relevant, especially since the sync

exactly.

the restore process includes several individual steps, all of which are
done automatically and in the correct order, and when the process
completes, everything the user expects is on the device.

the user does not need to do *anything* extra, contrary to what some
people are claiming.
