No reason, which is why iTunes doesn't do it (nospam insists that it does). Of course if it _isn't_ there (which is the case for me) then it would be nice to have a way to back it up.

No. This tells iTunes it shouldn't *synchronize*, but a reasonable person would expect a backup to backup all content. iTunes doesn't. -- We have enough youth, how about a fountain of SMART?

You could have out music on your device from a different computer. nope. ios devices sync to only one computer. if you try to put music on it from a different computer, itunes will ask to wipe the device and sync to the new computer. if you say no, then the existing music remains and synced to the other computer. been there done that. if you enable manually manage music, you can copy music from more than one computer *if* the device is not an iphone. been there done that too. for some reason, iphones cannot have music from more than one computer, even with manually manage. i don't know why this is the case. the people at apple i've asked could only say 'someone decided to do it that way.' > 2. You could have purchased music from Apple on your device. which is copied during the sync/backup process and can be redownloaded at any time anyway, so it's a non-issue. > 3. Your computer hard drive could have died catastrophically with > no backup of your music. wow talk about grasping at straws. any backup can die. that's why you have multiple backups. should your computer's hard drive fail, it's unlikely that losing your music is going to be the biggest concern. in any event, restore the computer's hard drive first and then restore the ios device. it takes longer, but that's just how it is. worst case, you just re-encode your cds and redownload any purchased music. unless you have pirated music, there is always a backup of your music, whether or not you have a backup of your hard drive. it's just on cds and not as convenient and very time consuming to restore it. if you did pirate your music, just pirate it again, or do the right thing and buy it. > 4. You could be using Apple's podcast app (or someone else's) to > download podcasts over WIFI to your device. podcasts can be redownloaded. the backup is in the cloud. most people don't keep podcasts after listening (or watching) them anyway. > There are more.. Hey - he asked for ways this can happen. This is a way it can and has happened to me. Not grasping at straws - lots of us have lost hard drives. > any backup can die. that's why you have multiple backups. Well, if iTunes would back my music up from my iPhone, I could have multiple backups easily. As it is, if the music is on my computer _and_ on my iDevice, why should I need a _third_ backup? (Answer: because iTunes backups work in a screwy way, and won't backup your music.) > should your computer's hard drive fail, it's unlikely that losing your > music is going to be the biggest concern. It would be my second biggest concern. My biggest concern would be my photos, which are irreplaceable. All the rest of my data (beside music and photos) is small and is backed up in multiple places. The music and photos are harder to backup. My music is tedious to replace (ripping CDs), but at least _can_ be replaced. > > 4. You can only download the most recent podcast, but sometimes I don't get around to listening to it for several weeks.

(Answer: > because iTunes backups work in a screwy way, and won't backup your > music.) no, that's not the answer. itunes does not work in a screwy way. it's actually *very* straightforward in how it works, unless you start modifying its settings and disabling what it normally does, which you have done. > > should your computer's hard drive fail, it's unlikely that losing your > > music is going to be the biggest concern. > > It would be my second biggest concern. The > music and photos are harder to backup. not at all. they're just files and can be backed up just as easily as anything else. you just need a bigger hard drive for media backups than for non-media. you can also put music in the cloud with services such as itunes match and google & amazon's equivalents. > My music is tedious to replace (ripping CDs), but at least _can_ be replaced. that's what i said. your 'backup' are the original cds. it's certainly not convenient to restore from them, but you still have a copy. > > > 4. It asks do you want to sync music to this computer. I don't. nope. it now asks do you want to trust the computer, which is new in ios 7. since you not only have chosen to enable manually manage music but *also* disabled sync, you have told itunes to not do anything, so why are you surprised it won't back up anything? > That shouldn't mean that I'm not allowed to make backups, and it > doesn't mean that. I can make backups. > > But backups (as Apple says) don't include music, etc. at the end of the day, users can restore a device that has been synced/backed up and they get *everything*. to them, itunes *is* backing it up. that is, unless they intentionally tell itunes to skip some or all of it, as you have done. as they say, pebkac.

First off, dumbshit is not my pal. Second of all, I never said that the iTunes backup included the music.
