You can also lead a horse to arsenic. That's not what I'm talking
about. I'm not talking about using the tablet as an input device
for another computer.
I have spelled it out well enough...

No, I'm not talking about using the tablet as an input device for a computer. I'm talking about using the tablet with a big monitor, no other computer involved. The usefulness of what I'm talking about has become more clear thanks to one naysayer's reply pointing out the simple fact that even when your tablet is connected to a big monitor, you still must keep your eye on the small tablet screen when clumsily tapping. That's because there is no pointer showing on the monitor, there is no way to know where your touch input will occur without looking at the small tablet screen. For that reason alone, obviously using the tablet screen as a touchpad (with the touchpad pointer showing on the monitor) when the tablet is connected to a big monitor would be much better than the way it is simply mirroring the tablet output on the monitor. Also useful would be tapping someplace on the tablet screen to momentarily replace the touchpad with a virtual keyboard. Or... Being able to resize the touchpad showing on the tablet screen and maybe simultaneously showing a keyboard (of course without showing the keyboard on the monitor).

If I understand you correctly, you want the tablet to become a touchpad, so actions on the tablet have no relevance to what is displayed on the tablet, but you want what is displayed on the tablet to be displayed on the big screen, along with a pointer that shows what is going on on the touchpad-tablet. All I can say is "Good luck with that."

The big display would mirror the tablet display. The tablet would show a tiny pointer. How small doesn't matter because you won't be looking at the tablet. The pointer location would correspond to the current pointer location as shown by "developer options" on an Android. That pointer would be driven by touch. That should be easy enough, the only difference is that a relative pointer position would be used instead of current finger point position. Apparently 99% of the programming for this stuff is already done on Android tablets. Probably also on iPads or whatever. It would just need a GUI switch and to make a few tiny adjustments when connected to a monitor.

That can be done. In fact, Apple does it whenever it shows off a new iDevice at a product introduction. But I don't know how they do it.

It's easy (for them). All they have to do is draw a tiny pointer on the tablet screen and manipulate it with data that is already available. A tap occurs at the pointer location, not at the tap location. I can do that on a PC with a hook. Pointer movement occurs when the fingertip drags on the screen, relative to the begin point. I'm not even a (real) programmer and I do that stuff on a PC. There are some useful things that they would need to do that I don't do, like with pointer acceleration. The type of settings you see in mouse and touchpad properties. But I'm sure they can do that easily. Something I would look for in an Apple video is how grainy the pointer looks. They can probably make it look good, but maybe they don't. The other part would be toggling a keyboard in place of the touchpad (that would not show on the big screen), but I'm sure they can also do that easily.

This has been an amazingly flame ridden thread with more heat than
light. I think your question makes perfect sense and I'm not sure why
so many folks are having trouble understanding it - though in many cases
the problem is not that they don't understand what you're asking, but
that they're trying to offer help for at least some part of the problem,
i.e., they really are trying to help you and not give you a tough time.
However, leaving that entirely aside, I'm not aware of any solution to
the problem.
It seems to me there are two parts to what you want to do:
1. Can you get the tablet screen display to appear on a monitor?
The answer to that is Yes, if you have a tablet that offers the
appropriate outputs. If your tablet conforms to the MHL standard or the
SlimPort standard it can send its screen output, and audio too, to a
monitor. There are other hardware/software solutions as well.
But you may have known that already.
2. Can you delete the onscreen keyboard from the output to the monitor?
I don't know the MHL or SlimPort standards but I'd be very surprised if
they, or any other output systems, support this. As near as I can tell,
the output methods are designed to work with ANY software. I assume
they do that by taking the processed visual output of the display, i.e.,
the output after every program (such as the application you are running
and the virtual keyboard) have finished and what's left is raw data from
the video memory, no longer having any association with any particular
application (e.g., OS, app or keyboard). It's no longer a keyboard or
an app, it's just a pixel map image.
I would think that any solution that does what you want would have to
intervene earlier in the process of constructing the display image. It
would have to have access to the output of an application BEFORE the
keyboard is overlaid upon it. To support that, someone would have to
write some very low OS screen driver level software that preserved the
pre-overlaid image and sent it to the output channel before passing it
on to the software that overlaid the keyboard on it.
I would think it would also require two video memories - one that the
app writes to and which is read by the monitor driver, and one that the
tablet display driver reads - which is copied from the first memory onto
the second and then overlaid by the keyboard.
Is it possible to do that? I'm sure it is, but I haven't heard of
anyone doing it, and it's not hard to see why.
It's a hard problem and there's probably more software involved than 1
app plus 1 keyboard. There are also notification areas added by the OS
and there may be interactions between the keyboard and the app that
affect what the app generates. Also, a smart app might not even bother
drawing the screen under the parts that it believes are currently
overlaid by the keyboard. So what your video driver would show would be
useless for the part that was "under" the keyboard. Some apps might
work and some might not. Paradoxically, the simpler apps would work and
the smarter, highly optimized apps, would not.
The best people to build such an app would probably be the programmers
at Google who develop the keyboard app, or at one of the big vendors
like Samsung, who understand the workings of their hardware and can make
the appropriate modifications to the keyboard app and output drivers.
However, you never know. Super-smart programmers and engineers can crop
up anywhere in the world and figure out a lot more than anyone would
imagine them to be able to do.

Actually, the main thrust of my suggestion is to use the tablet as a touchpad (see the subject line). > Is it possible to do that? I'm sure it is, but I haven't heard > of anyone doing it, and it's not hard to see why. > > It's a hard problem Not really, again, except for the pointer acceleration part. I'm a novice programmer and I can do most of that stuff on a PC. All you would have to do, as already described once or twice in this thread, is to display a tiny pointer on the tablet screen and then use the tablet as a touchpad, using relative coordinates instead of touch coordinates. It's that simple. That doesn't accommodate the keyboard part, but a programmer could easily turn the tablet into a touchpad. But, again and again and again, it might be a little awkward since the tablet usually uses the clumsy touch GUI which would be showing on the monitor. I suppose a Windows 8 tablet that can jump into the desktop would be a prime candidate for such a device. But I don't know anything about Windows 8 tablets. I suppose they can get to the desktop like I do on a PC.
