#33151 — MyTracks is dead, Google Fit stinks - now what?

SubjectMyTracks is dead, Google Fit stinks - now what?
Message-ID<no4r90$3dh$1@gioia.aioe.org>
I have been using MyTracks since before it was Google.

Tried to install on a new phone.

Only now do I find out that Google killed My Tracks earlier this year.
It's no longer available.

Google says to use Google Fit instead.
After installing Fit, I found out is a complex joke of some sort.

Is there a good 1:1 replacement for MyTracks that is *simple*?
1. You tap to start. You tap to finish.
2. You save the KML or GPX to storage.
3. It has an underlying topo map.

No login required.
No height/weight/gender selection garbage.
No complex activity logging (I just want the GPX track).

That's all I need.
That's what MyTracks did.

Is there a good simple tracking alternative now that My Tracks is gone?

There is another app called My Tracks which does most of what the Google
version did.

A search on this group will find a recent discussion.

I saw quite a few apps _named_ "my tracks" apps in Google Play.
But the name is meaningless.

Which simple gpx tracking apps are actually good and which are like a
"Pocahontas" kids game, just playing off the name?

They only need to do three basic things:
1. Tap start to start - tape stop to stop.
2. Save the track (optionally provide information about the track).
3. Show an underlying topo map (offline is required)

MyTracks was simple. It did not have a complex interfact.

Does anyone here use a simple tracking interface like MyTracks was?

I ran a search before I asked.

Try the thread :

"FYI ... here are my offline GPS map apps on Android"

sSwYI2Bg7mjXFw7r@ku.gro.lloiff

Is the MID of my posting in that thread.

This was the second half of last month.

I had already seen that but here is all that it said.

I did try the Google Fit app, but it doesn't even have the most basic
option of saving the track to a file!

What Google Fit did was log the "path" (not the track!) on a Google street
map (not hiking map!) which had to be online (who is going to be online all
the time when hiking?). In essence, Google Fit is _not_ a replacement for
MyTracks. `

I appreciate the pointer.

Unfortunately, that article doesn't tell me anything but the name
"MyTracks", which I already knew there were imposter apps when I went
looking for "Google" MyTracks and found out that it was dead.

The old Google MyTracks earned PCWorld's perfect 5/5 score, where they said
"this app is just about perfect" and which I would agree.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MyTracks

Since Google Fit isn't even close, Google has suggested the following
replacement apps according to this article on replacing MyTracks:
http://phandroid.com/2016/01/28/backup-google-my-tracks/

1. Strava running and biking
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.strava

2. Endomondo running and walking
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.endomondo.android

3. Map My Run fitness trainer
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapmyfitness.runtrainer

4. Map My Hike GPS Hiking
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapmyhike.android2\

5. GPS Logger for Android
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mendhak.gpslogger

6. GPX Viewer
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vecturagames.android.app.gpxviewer

Of those 6 apps, only the last 3 show any promise upon first inspection.
Of the apps named "MyTracks", you're probably using the one by Daniel Qin,
named "My Tracks" which doesn't seem useful reading the description:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zihua.android.mytracks&hl=en

Unlike Google Fit, at least routes can be exported to KML/GPX like MyTracks
had. This bogus My Tracks doesn't seem to have offline maps though, which
pretty much makes it useless outdoors, and even worse, it doesn't seem to
have _any_ maps (it has to get its maps from somewhere else).

But maybe I can force it to work like the old MyTracks did if I can force
it to use a USGS topo map instead of Google street maps.

Ski Tracks will save a .gpx file, and/or two other formats and email
them to you or display them on your phone with whatever you use to
display .gpx files. If you have wifi access while you're tracking it
will show it on a google-earth-like display. No topo display, though.
Is there a topo map app that will accept .gpx files?

Start. Stop. Save. Share.

Thank you for sharing that Ski Tracks might work to replace the lost
functionality of My Tracks.

I tried Google Fit today for five miles, and, it is absolutely terrible.
I can go on and on about why it is *not* a replacement for MyTracks, but
suffice to simply say that it doesn't do simple things like save a track,
so, it's basically a flawed design from the start.

Google Fit might work for other people but it's *not* a MyTracks
replacement.

Looking further for a MyTracks replacement, Ski Tracks from Core Coders LTD
deserves a look see.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.corecoders.skitracks&hl=en

The first words of the description are scary in that it's "designed for
winter sports", so, it might not have what we need.

The good news is that the description implies it works offline, which is a
basic requirement of any hiking/tracking app. Also, from what you say, Ski
Tracks will save the GPX or KML track onto your device (there should never
be any need to upload a track). That's another basic requirement of any
tracking app.

The bad news is that you need to be on the Internet just to see an
underlying map, which pretty much kills it as a basic app for replacing
MyTracks functionality. Also no topo, which, again, is a very basic
requirement.

I'll keep looking, as today I simply tested Google Fit, which is fine for
some people but which is not even close to a MyTracks replacement.

Before you look at the Ski Tracks .gpx file in google earth, you have to
delete one line from the .gpx file -- otherwise each point is displayed
with a LONG title which is miserably annoying. The google earth display
itself is annoying with regard to arrows, points and labels.

OSMand will save .gpx tracks and work off line. I think you can buy
topo maps for it. It's battery-intensive, though.

I may try osmand as an alternative to MyTracks, so thank you for that
second suggestion.

Today I first tried the Google-suggested Map My Hike GPX Hiking from
"MapMyFitness, Inc" alternative to MyTracks.

I think Google doesn't know what MyTracks did, because the first thing
their suggested app did was ask for a lot of permissions before installing.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapmyhike.android2\

After that, it immediately asked for (and required!) a login, which means
it's useless as an alternative to the MyTracks hiking app.

Deleting Map My Hike, I then tried the next Google-supplied suggestion,
which was to install GPS Logger for Android by Mendhak
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mendhak.gpslogger

Like MyTracks did, GPS Logger for Android opened up into "Simple View",
which is a good start.

This simple view displayed a big blue "Start Logging" button (which turns
green when you press it, saying "Stop Logging". So, like MyTracks, at least
GPS Logger has a simple and clean interface.

The interface dynamically lists a half-dozen stats while you hike:
1. Number of satellites (23 in my case)
2. Elevation (in feet, but only after I set it to "imperial units")
3. Time (in minutes)
4. Distance (in feet)
5. Accuracy (35 feet in my case)
6. Heading (in degrees)
7. Speed (in miles per hour)
8. Number of points (this was unset)

So far, so good for simplicity.
Looking around at the settings, I see that the logging is actually always
in SI units (meters) but the display can be set to imperial units. This
isn't a big deal though, as long as we can save the track onto the device
and view the track on an underlying topo map on the device.

Looking around for underlying maps, I find the first option for underlying
maps is to automatically upload your track to OpenStreetMaps, which also
requires a login at that web site, so that's out of the question.

The second option is found in the settings of GPS Logger where there is a
button to "Visualize Stats" which takes you to the Google Play store for
"GPS Visualizer for Android" by Mendhak for a few bucks.

That visualizer might work but it's not even remotely close to a
replacement for Google MyTracks by any measure, but I'm going out now
before it gets hot, for a five-mile hike, so I will see if the app has any
redeeming value as a simple breadcrumber.

Thank you for that hint about using editing Ski Tracks GPX files when using
them with Google Earth as the underlying map.

I'm first going down the list of Google-suggested MyTracks replacements, so
the app I'm working on now is Map My Hike GPX Hiking from
"MapMyFitness, Inc". It seems to breadcrumb, but it remains to be seen if
those breadcrumbs can be saved onto the flash card and whether or not they
can be shown in real time on an underlying offline map on the device.

After I test Map My Hike today, I will try to save the track as either GPX
or KML onto the phone itself. If that works, then I will try to visualize
the track on the Google-suggested MyTracks-replacement app named GPX
Viewer, by Vectura Games.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vecturagames.android.app.gpxviewer

The description for GPX Viewer says it displays GPX/KML breadcrumbs on
Google Maps (which can be saved offline ahead of time using the "OK Maps"
method).

The description for GPX Viewer says it works with "some" OSM maps, so I
will try one of the offline OSM maps that I already have, once I have a GPX
or KML track from Map My Hike.

I made a mistake in that I was testing "GPS Logger" today.

I hiked about 6 miles today using GPS Logger for Android
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mendhak.gpslogger

I then loaded the GPX file into GPX Viewer by Vectura Games:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vecturagames.android.app.gpxviewer

Other than an anomaly of a strange far-out-of-range datapoint, the GPS
Logger app successfully saved the track as a GPX file onto my phone storage
media.

Because of that way-off datapoint, all the GPS Logger (distance, elevation,
speed, etc.) stats were wrong, but Map My Hike displayed the given
elevation, speed, time, and distance on a chart (which is a requirement to
replace Google MyTracks).

GPX Viewer, by Vectura Games loaded the previously saved GPX file from GPS
Logger, and nicely displayed the track on a choice of typical Google maps
such as road view, satellite view, and topographical view.

This is a good start as it's the best solution tested so far to reproduce
what we had with Google MyTracks, but it's still not even close as MyTracks
displayed the track in real time on an offline map, while this track
display is not in real time and is only working online (so far).

So tomorrow I will test out the app suggested by Adrian, which was next on
my FIFO list.

This is a thread about finding the best Google MyTracks replacement.

Therefore, I'm not even going to respond to the two obvious trolls:
- Frank Slootweg (how much value die *he* add to this thread?)
- tlvp (has never once added technical value to *any* thread!)

Back to adding on-topic technical value, after testing out all the viable
Google-recommended MyTracks replacement, my conclusion is that none of them
replace MyTracks functionality of:
a. Offline realtime GPS tracking & topographic mapping
b. Saving KML/GPX files to the device & displaying in real time
c. Realtime statistics such as elevation, distance, time, etc.

The closest of the Google-suggested apps was the combination:
A. GPS Logger for Android, by Mendhak
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mendhak.gpslogger

B. GPX Viewer by Vectura Games
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vecturagames.android.app.gpxviewer

The next few apps to test will be the following, including the one Adrian
suggested earlier:
1. My Tracks by Daniel Qin
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zihua.android.mytracks
Note that Google had no space while the Daniel Qin app has a space.

2. OSM Tracker by Nicolas Guillaumin
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.guillaumin.android.osmtracker

3. Geo Tracker - GPS tracker by Ilya Bogdanovich
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ilyabogdanovich.geotracker

4. Open GPS Tracker by René de Groot
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.sogeti.android.gpstracker

Today I wasn't able to walk due to an injury suffered yesterday, but
tomorrow I'll test out Adrian's suggested My Tracks & let you know how it
works with respect to Google MyTracks.

When I started Daniel Qin's "My Tracks", it opened to an almost blank page.
I hit the red circled plus sign at the bottom right, and it showed my
location on a Google street map, where successive pinching zoomed in to my
location.

The underlying Google map had Traffic, Satellite, and Terrain options, so I
chose the Terrain setting. Tomorrow I'll test it out, but it seems to start
working simply by hitting the arrowed play-shaped button, which actually
records (normally a "record" button is a circle and not an arrow).

Let me know if you have better ideas for Google MyTracks replacements.

There are 2 apps called "My Tracks":

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zihua.android.mytracks
and
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cie.enpi.mytracks

The OP did not identify which one he likes or decided to use. However,
since the OP posted *5* months ago, it is highly unlikely that the OP is
still monitoring or watching his old thread to then reply to inquiries
about it.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Begin off-topic rant about simpletons.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I'm not a troll (simply because I don't troll).
And I'm always here, and I have been here for decades.

I won't respond further except to say that people like Chris are worrisome
to society because details are so far beyond his comprehension that his
opinions are based merely on a single item that he understands.

- He saw a red car, and it was fast,
hence
- To him, all red cars are fast.

His decisions are made upon a single datum that he understands.
Complex data befuddles people like Chris.
He can't comprehend that others (who can handle detail) think differently
than he does BECAUSE they can handle detail.

- He is capable of comprehending that a terrorist was a Muslim,
hence
- To him, all Muslims are terrorists.

Chris is a simpleton.
But lots of people are simpletons.

They're the ones who drag technical threads into the dirt.
Every time.

Because they make decisions based on what they understand.
Not on the facts.

Facts are far too complex for simpletons like Chris to comprehend.

Examples of decisions from sad people like you are:
a. You select batteries by warranty because specs are too confusing to you.
b. You buy tires by brand name, again, because specs are confusing to you.
c. You assume all Muslims are terrorists because that's how you think.
d. You prefer marketing claims on products because specs are too complex.
e. You believe all the old wives tales because actual facts befuddle you.
f. If someone won't tell you their SSN you feel they must be hiding crime.
g. Anyone wearing a ski mask is a bank robber to you (you think simple).
i. Anyone giving a fake email address to a web site is hiding something.
j. Anyone providing a fake birth date on the net is an illegal immigrant.
k. Anyone not providing their real name on Usenet is a malicious person.
l. Anyone who changes their nym (but doesn't ever troll) is a troll.

I can't fault you for latching on to a single fact and then making wildly
unsubstantiated conclusions because I realize there are MANY people like
you for whom facts just are too complex.

People like you pick cars and people by color.

Sure, it's easy. And, for sure, red cars are fast, so, what the heck, you
may as well conclude that ALL red cars are fast. That's how your mind
works, and you've shown that time and time and time again that you're
completely incapable of understanding the slightest bit of detail.

Which is why my next explanation will be so beyond your feeble capabilities
of comprehension that I don't expect you (or many others) to understand.

Nonetheless, I'll try since I believe in mankind, even simpletons such as
you appear to be from what you consistently spout.

1. A troll changes headers.
2. Therefore, anyone who changes headers, to you, is a troll.
3. Even if they don't ever troll.

Privacy is far too complex an issue for you to understand.
a. I don't hide who I am in my posts
b. There are two Usenet use models, where mine is simpler
c. I use Usenet to ask a question
d. That question is often VERY DETAILED
e. I realize details are beyond your comprehension
f. So you simply post your drivel (which you comprehend)
g. Others respond to your drivel (there are many like you)
h. In reality, all you can do, for technical questions, is troll.

Fact is, you can NEVER answer the technical question
Details confuse you immensely.

Your use mode for Usenet is to post drivel to many threads.

My use model is to create a thread, where the headers are consistent within
that thread, and where all the facts are provided inside that thread, so my
"history" is not meaningful to resolving the questions in that thread.

I realize this entire explanation above is far too complex for you to
comprehend, so, I expect you to continue to post your drivel (and others
will respond to your drivel because that's what they understand).
-----------------------------------------------------------
End off-topic rant about simpletons, which applies to
probably half or three quarters of this Usenet crowd, where,
if it wasn't for the quarter of intelligent people, Usenet
would be lost.
-----------------------------------------------------------

To answer the technical questions, I have long ago resolved the major
technical issue about Google MyTracks (and I believe the detailed answer
was posted long ago, but I'm not going to dig it up).

I'm still working on perfecting the minor technical issues where my needs
are similar to many other people's needs, but more complex than most.

Fact is, I hike off trail in rugged country where I am always on airplane
mode (for a variety of reasons too complex for simpletons to ever
understand) such that the phone has to be completely self sufficient with
regard to GPS location, offline maps, real-time tracking, and active
routing.

To summarize the main technical issues, the phone must do these things
well, for free:
a. Save a track (the freeware OSM Tracker works fine for this).
b. Show where I am on an offline USGS map (OSM maps aren't ready yet)
c. Route along a track or to a point (with navigational directives).

True to the fact that details make simple decisions less simple, the
"concept" of OSM maps is fantastic, but they're just not there yet when you
compare them to USGS topo maps. So, for now, the tools must work seamlessly
with offline USGS 1:24K topo maps.

Carlos posts.
I, VanguardLH, reply to Carlos.
Chris says [Carlos] is a troll.
Jong defends Carlos.

Nymshifters are trolls. Sockpuppets are used by trolls.

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!search/stijn$20de$20jong/alt.free.newsservers/ghJht7mhZGY/LmTRU_e_AQAJ

Gee, I wonder why Jong would want to know how to cancel posts by others.
Been here for decades, uh huh, but no clue about cancels and why they
are either ignored or severely restricted to only the original poster
through an account (which requires having an account which Jong doesn't
have at AIOE since that is an *un*registered free Usenet provider).

Wants to modify headers when he submits a post. He wants a client that
can allow him to better mask his nymshifting and socking.

Been here for decades. Uh huh. Can only find posts by "Stijn De Jong"
going back to less than a month. Guess that's when he nymshifted again.

Not that it really matters, but it's (supposed to be) 'De Jong'. I.e.
'De Jong' is a family/last name.

But it can't even figure out if it's 'Stijn De Jong' or 'Stijn De
Koning'. And - besides its never-ending nymshifting - it abuses the
nlnet.nl domain, which is yet another abuse of the net.

IIRC, you've probably also seen him wasting the time of the n.s.r.

Did I already mention that it's a "dishonest lying obnoxious pompous
