#57212 — Ringtone choice

I'm using the 'phone' app that came with the Moto G5+.  The most recent 
update (my guess) eliminated the choice of ringtones other than those 
that are included with the app, resulting in missed calls because the 
ringtone selection switched to 'none'.  I looked at various phone apps, 
but they don't seem interested in receiving calls, just dialing, contact 
use, etc.

I spent years looking for the 'Our Man Flint' ringtone and I really want 
to keep using it!  It's loud and I can recognize it in a crowded noisy 
room, unlike generic ringtones.  I emailed Motorola, but I don't know 
how long they will take to respond.

If you still have or can obtain the ringtone file in question, just 
copying it into the Ringtones folder on the Moto G should make it show 
up everywhere you can pick a ringtone.

The 'Ringtones' folder contained none of the other useless ringtones 
(only an .ogg file that hangouts used, so I ignored it), the names of 
which ES File Explorer was unable to find.  Putting flint.wav in that 
folder worked after a few false starts wherein only a part of the file 
played.  Strange and annoying.  That folder wouldn't exist if I hadn't 
installed hangouts, but I've had 'flint' on the phone since I got it 
over a year ago.

I'm confused as to what you need, so I don't know if this is what you want
as I never heard of "Our Man Flint", so I don't even know what an "Our Man
Flint" ringtone is....

If you need to convert the format, there are good freeware programs on
Windows to do that, as I'm sure you're aware, e.g., audacity, handbrake,
super, shotcut, etc.

You can also easily make your own ringtones, e.g., by using NewPipe
freeware on Android to strip the audio from a YouTube video and then using
Audacity freeware to "simplify" it to a ringtone (where you often run a
band pass filter to limit the bandwidth high and low frequencies).

I saw the response to "copy it to the ringtone folder", where I'm
unfamiliar with that folder. 

Looking on my LG Stylo 3 Plus (Nougat 7.0) from Windows over USB, there is
the "Internal Storage" folder, then "Ringtones", which is empty.

Since I have my contacts set to automatic ringtones, a different ringtone
for each contact, all done automatically by the default phone app, there
_must_ be a place for Ringtones _outside_ of that Ringtones folder.

As I've explained to Frank Slootweg in the past, the developers who
designed Android don't seem to have any cohesive folder strategy, or, if
there is one, I don't get it.

Why wouldn't _all_ ringtones go in the default Android ringtone folder?
Where are default Android ringtones _supposed_ to be globally located?

Old movie.  Spy spoof with James Coburn.  He had an alarm watch with a 
little thingy that stuck out and poked his hand while it played that 
tune.  Just a little short thing, but it definitely sounds like an alarm.

You'd think, wouldn't you.  GOD how I despise having 6 levels of 
subdirectories to navigate, especially with fat fingers.  Might as well 
be windows :-(

Apparently there is NO default android ringtone folder, and the only one 
I have was generated by either hangouts or google voice (which hangouts 
uses).

I manage my Android file system from Windows, which has the advantage of
the mouse, huge screen, and keyboard.

What I am doing is creating on my external SD card (which, if I had one,
could be as large as 2TB), is creating a /sdcard1/data1 directory that
contains an "audio" folder that has in it different types of audio files.
a. alarms
b. songs
c. voice recordings
d. call recordings
e. ringtones
etc.

Do you know what format the ringtones should be in?

I just mounted my internal memory as drive Z on Windows where I can run the
following command to create a list of all the files on the Android device:
  dir /s/a/l/on/b Z:\* > c:\tmp\all_files_on_android.txt

From that list, I can easily find any particular format file, e.g., 
  type all_files.txt | findstr ".m3g"
Or, any other Windows command to find certain files:
  dir /s/a/l/on/b Z:\*.wav
etc.

What file formats are we looking for?

What I can do is run a quick batch command to copy them from the internal
sd card over to the audio folder of the external sd card.

On my G6 Play with an SD card, all of my ringtones are under a Ringtones 
folder. When I connected the phone to my PC, the folder hierarchy was 
already in place (Alarms, Android, DCIM, etc.), so I just moved my personal 
ringtones from my Samsung to the Moto via the PC. Then I just picked which I 
wanted for whoever in Contacts.

Is this the one you want?

The guy asked if it was a downloaded or native ringtone (as if I hadn't 
already explained) and suggested rebooting.  At least he didn't suggest 
a factory reset.  I told him my solution and asked where the native 
ringtones were stored.

Googling, I found this which purports to help people _set_ ringtones on 
their phone to what they want those ringtones to be.

If you want to _make_ a ringtone, bear in mind that it has been said 
(somewhere) that you can _damage_ the phone's speakers with a badly 
designed ringtone (is that true?).

Even if you don't need to prevent damage, this solution below that I tested 
on your ringtone is a general solution to make a ringtone out of anything.

1. Download this 3-second 16-bit ringtone from the list I provided earlier:

2. GSpot freeware identifies the codec as "MPEG-1 Layer 3", 44100Hz 128kb/s
3. MP3Tag freeware shows no ID3 tags, so I added:
   Album = ringtone, Title = Our Man Flint, Artist = Our Man Flint
4. Audacity freeware shows it to be a stereo file with some blank spots:
   (It says 32 bit float, even though the original web page said 16 bit.)
5. Audacity:Analyze > Plot Spectrum (shows a frequency analysis chart)

6. Audacity:Effect > Equalization (allows you to band pass filter)
   o Attenuate to -24dB from 20Hz to 300Hz & from 1000Hz to 20000Hz

7. Audacity:Effect > Compressor (reduce high:low volume delta)
   Change the Ratio from 2:1 to 3:1 
   Uncheck the [_]Make-up gain for 0 dB after compressing

   Change the "New Peak Amplitude (dB)" from 0.0 to -3 (dB) [or -2 dB]
9. Audacity:Tracks > Stereo Track to Mono (merges both tracks to mono)

    Audacity:Effects > Fade Out (on the last few seconds)
11. Optionally trim the song (ringtones repeat if less than about 20sec)
12. Audacity:File > Export > Export Audio > myringtone.mp3

I would put all my ringtones in the same folder:

None of the above.  The problem was in getting the phone to recognize 
the downloaded ringtone.  The existing ringtones were not locatable by 
name.  The only Ringtone(s) folder was NOT created by the native phone 
app.  The flint.wav ringtone had been working when it was just in the / 
directory of the sd card, but stopped suddenly -- possibly as a result

Actually that was the middle thing "setting the ringtone".
It had to be one of the three! :)

Thanks for explaining the issue as that is the one issue I didn't delve
into much, other than to note that there is reputedly an app that "sets"
the ringtone for each app for you (but I haven't tested it).

The Zedge app is _supposed_ to help you _find_ and _set_ the ringtone for
any given app. Does it do that? I don't know. But that's my understanding.

Again, I do not know if it actually works, but it is "supposed" to:
o Find all your ringtones, and, 
o Set any given app to use those ringtones

  As with anything native, the native ringtones are in a folder you
can't access, because otherwise you could delete them. I.e. similar to
(but not the same as) built-in apps.

Google giveth and google taketh away, blessed be...  It's really 
bothersome when updates remove functionality, especially since no notice 
is EVER given.

Motorola installs a lot of google stuff I'd rather not have (no, I DON'T 
want a Hindi character set and I DON'T want google games or music 
or...), but no commercial apps.  Could be worse.

I can only speak to my experience. I have a custom ringtone 
"oh_fortuna_ringtone.mp3" and it is located in "This PC\Nexus 5\Internal 
storage\Ringtones". The "This PC\Nexus 5" part comes from searching the 
USB-connected phone via my W10 PC. Note that the file in question is just a 
plain old monaural MP3 audio file and the phone has no problem with it.

I know that I used some media or file-management program to tell the phone 
to use this ringtone in the first place and don't remember which one. Good 
news is that it seems that the inbuilt Media Storage app is capable of 
handling the task. At least when I ran it the app showed this ringtone 
along with the list of all the Android standards.

BTW, I had a "Flint" ringtone at one time but find that the bold chorus of 
Orff's "Carmina Burana" cuts through every sort of outside disturbance.
