The problem was in getting the phone to recognize the downloaded ringtone. The existing ringtones were not locatable by name. The only Ringtone(s) folder was NOT created by the native phone app. The flint.wav ringtone had been working when it was just in the / directory of the sd card, but stopped suddenly -- possibly as a result of an update to the phone app. I put the desired ringtone (flint.wav) in the ..../Ringtones folder and it worked again.
