It's clear you've never taken logic, whereas in my logic classes decades
ago, as an undergraduate, your argument clearly puts forth a non sequitur
based on a false equivalence.

Your basic assumption that intelligent people must be stealing because they
can legally do things that unintelligent people can't do, is absurd.

The developer may have a legitimate business expectation that users will
see ads, but that is not the same thing as establishing that a user has
taken property without permission, which is what stealing ordinarily means.

The simple fact that intelligent people don't ever see ads is not stealing.

It's the same argument Apple religious zealots make all the time.
The fact they can't figure out how to use an app is not stealing.

They hate that they see ads.
I love that I never see ads.

The difference?
Intelligence.

There's no intelligence education bragging necessary for my argument. The
obvious answer to my rhetorical question was that I was not stealing by
using my Reading Mode app to remove the ads anymore than I would be
stealing by just reading the text and ignoring the ads. A very intelligent
 argument don't you think?

Lots of intelligent Usenet folks download commercial books on the binary
groups to read. Is that stealing? Course it is. Any intelligent person
 would know that.

Yup. Intelligence. Intelligence. Intelligence. Gotta admire folks who brag
 about it...

Yup. Intelligent folks completely agree with your intelligent arguments.

All the Apple owning folks I know seem intelligent enough. But I haven't met
any of your intelligent religious zealots yet. If they can't figure out
your intelligent logic I can see where you would think they are not
 intelligent.

Hi AJL,

My mistake. I apologize. I will always admit when/if I'm wrong.
Thanks for pointing it out.

I see now, only after looking back, that I confused you with Arno!
My bad.

It may have been Arno who was arguing that it's "stealing" to set up a
phone so that it doesn't show ads, not you. My bad. Mea culpa.

I apologize to you for wrongly impugning your honor & good intentions.

I apologize if/when I screw up. I kind'a checked out'ta this thread when I
decided to invest in writing an app to archive the homescreen APKs instead.

I again apologize that I didn't get that you were agreeing in that the way
the law and morals and basic human interaction works is the developer can
certainly "hope" that people will see ads that will enrich his bottom line.

As you're well aware, I contribute code myself, but I don't try to make
money off of my efforts (Lord knows, I should probably try maybe).

In my case, my phone "accidentally" lost the ability to display ads simply
because I removed everything I could think of that wasn't needed long ago.

That had the side effect of making it impossible for an ad to show up.

Again, I apologize for confusing you with Arno. Mea culpa. My bad.

The Apple folks are always maintaining that if you do anything that Apple
doesn't want you to do, then it's stealing from Apple, which kind'a is
where I was responding from.

The Apple religious nutcases are far worse than any of the Android nutcases
are, in terms of proclaiming what is stealing, that's fer' sure.

To them, just watching YouTube sans ads is "stealing", in their opinion.

Good point. I've always been far more intelligent than most people are.
But, of course, there are always those who are far more intelligent than I.

Actually, you were agreeing, which I didn't pick up upon, so that makes me
stupid, although in my defense, I was getting tired of the idiotic
discussion that Android sd card was "obsolete", although I don't remember
who made that absurd assessment, but it was perhaps likely one of the
trolls (maybe Jeorg or s|b, but I don't recall which troll it may have
been).

Between just you and me, anyone who believes anything Apple marketing tells
them to believe is an idiot. All the Apple religious zealots are parrots.

In the case of sd card, anyone saying they're "obsolete" certainly lacks
the ability to make logical assessments, don't you think?

Anyway, if I was so smart, I wouldn't have bothered to argue with them.
So that makes me stupid. :)

Dunno about marketing but the 3 Apple devices (2 tablets: mini and biggie,
watch, and phone) that live in my house have always worked just fine. And
that's good cause when they need adjusting the owner has to consult a grand
 or great-grandkid as I'm useless...

Yes. I use SD cards to sideload my stored apks to my new tablet toys and
also for my music when a tablet doesn't have enough internal memory for my
2K+ songs. Surprisingly this Chromebook I'm posting with doesn't even have
an SD slot. Guess ACER thinks they're getting obsolete? But I just use an
 adapter when necessary. No biggie...

It's hard for me to respond that "Apple devices work just fine", because I
too have Apple devices & fer' sure they can't do half of what Android does.

As far as anyone on the Apple newsgroups has ever been able to figure out
over the years, there's only a single thing iOS does that Android can't.

Worse (much worse), I can make a list of things iOS can't do that will go
on seemingly forever, where anyone who says iOS does what he needs it to do
isn't lying - but they are telling me they don't do all that much with it.

Like you, I use the sd card to offload my "data" such as the WhatsApp
videos of the grandkids, which I copy from internal storage to sd storage.

I don't remember who said sd tech was obsolete though, but, in reality,
anyone saying something that absurd clearly doesn't understand what it is.

There's a reason more than half of all current/new Android phones have it.
More importantly to your ACER point, there is a reason some don't have it.

IMHO, the only reason to remove sd functionality is to force people to be
so desperate as to feel the need to buy all the missing functionality back.

It depends on the user's needs. The user in my house is satisfied.

Don't know, don't care. Your Apple Android wars just don't interest me.

Lately I just download stuff from my Google Drive. It's much easier. To
insert an SD card in this tablet I'm posting with I have to first remove my
plastic cover, find an extraction pin, pop out the holder, stick the card
in the holder - a major PITA with my fumble fingers, and then insert the
holder. After that I have to reverse the process. Yuk. Thanks Google for
making downloading things so much easier.

>IMHO, the only reason to remove sd functionality is to force people to be

No big deal for me. I haven't needed it on my phone for years. And on the
Chromebook adapters are easy to use. And of course Google Drive is even
easier to use (if you have the time of course)...

Hi AJL,

I actually disagree with you on that, but I fully understand why you
"think" they're happy, and, even, they think they're happy.

Isn't that weird? It is, to me.
They can't do much, but, oddly, they think they can.

Why?
Heh heh heh....

It interests me how otherwise smart people believe the marketing BS.

For example, they're not satisfied. And you might ask me how I know that.
I know it because I've asked key questions of hundreds of Apple users.

Yup. Even in the Costco line, I ask people about their iPhone's.
At the gas station, I ask them about gas, but in lines, it's the iPhone.

None of them can do much with that iPhone, because it can't be done.
What they REALLY do, is "just give up", when they want to do something.

I get it that you won't believe me that they "just give up".
But you haven't studied it like I have, either.

Anyway,

>>As far as anyone on the Apple newsgroups has ever been able to figure out

>
> Don't know, don't care. Your Apple Android wars just don't interest me.

You've got it wrong. Very wrong. What interests me about Apple is that
almost everyone who buys an Apple product BELIEVING the marketing, is an
idiot, and yes, these may be otherwise some very smart people.

Yet, if they believe the marketing, then the fact is they're idiots.
That's what interests me.

How otherwise intelligent people believe the BS that Apple spews.
Note: Google/Motorola/Samsung/Microsoft/etc., spew marketing too.

It interests me how otherwise smart people believe the marketing BS.

I don't disagree that the highly marketed solutions are EASY to use.
They're designed to push you down a slide that they chose for you.

You don't even have to think about coming up with a solution.
They give you a ready-made solution that works if you follow it.

And, for which you pay for.

What always amazes me is how well Marketing works on people...

I understand that you "don't need it" for years, but I can't tell if you
yet understand "why" you don't need it. (Hint: You paid to get it back.)

I understand, where the best part is happy children 'cuz then I get to see
the grandchildren (and even one great grandchild!) every day I want to!

You may be aware that I dabbled in MARKETING professionally, where I'm
always amazed at the brilliant sway of Apple marketing over people.

Apple owners, by and large, are bamboozled like the Emperor's New Clothes.

They're happy.
Like he was happy.

You may be a bit less happy when you find out what Google is doing at this
very moment to make sideloading even apps from the play store miserable.

I'm not sure if it's worth fleshing out that thread though, as most people
likely haven't run into that problem, so it may not be worth the effort.

I don't have a lock screen, per se (it's just a clock) but I get it that
sometimes, if the ad lowers the price, I might even buy the object. Maybe.

A few times, for example, I bought Windows S laptops as gifts, but I was
lucky that Microsoft made it easy to convert them to Windows 10 Home.

But being Windows S saved fifty bucks on each Costco laptop.

They should have charged me the fifty bucks when I converted them to Home!

Come to think of it, I think it was Arno who claimed if we did anything
that didn't make money for them, that it was "stealing", so the question
becomes did I "steal" from Microsoft by buying a Windows S laptop at Costco
which was fifty bucks cheaper BECAUSE it was Windows S and not Windows
Home?

What amazes me is people think they didn't pay for the extra internal
storage in their car trunk, specifically so that they could "erroneously"
claim they don't need the extra trailer.

My point is what you said is a direct parrot of what Marketing told you to
say.

Which means... marketing worked on you.

Otherwise, you would have said it quite differently.

That's a perfect example of how people think the way marketing taught them
to think, and I rebel against that.

It's why I dislike religions, and why I ask everyone at the gas pump why
they're putting premium into a Honda Accord.

Won't bother me. Likely just you geeks. Google can do no wrong... ;)

I keep all my devices locked when not in use. If I'm away when the burglary
happens it may be several hours before I know my stuff is gone and plenty
of time for the perp to burglarize me a second time by going through my
online stuff. Happened to my neighbor. And in an earlier life I took
thousands of such reports. Stuff like that helps to build one's paranoia...

Let me rephrase.

I bought a car/phone with a trailer hitch/slot but I've never needed to use
it in 7 years so when I replace the car/phone I'll likely be happy with one
 that doesn't have a trailer hitch/slot.

That analogy any better?

If this is for an Android-to-Android transfer, you might want to have
a look at Android's 'Quick Share' sharing facility (previously
Samsung-only, now part of Android). Quick Share handles transfers of
files and folders via Internet, i.e. local Wi-Fi or mobile data.

A certain poster will be pleased to know that Quick Share also has
Apple AirDrop functionality, so the Walled Garden has yet another hole
in it.

I've always loaded any apks I wanted on a case by case basis. Using a card
for this WAS easy until my latest 2 toys with their convoluted slots. But
since most of my long saved apks are for earlier versions of Android and
fast becoming obsolete (like Groundhog) I think I'll just get out of the

I like your balanced attitude, and I again apologize for confusing you with
Arno, who decidedly so, does not have a balanced attitude about things.

You're easygoing, like I am.
If you ever have a problem installing packages, let us know.

We've invested likely hundreds of threads, over the years, on solving that.

As you must know, I have over a thousand packages installed on my Android
phone right now, and probably, oh, I don't know, five thousand APKs saved.

Overall, I don't seem to have much of a problem getting older APKs to work.
But I'm on Android 13, and on Samsung, so, maybe that's why the difference?

Perhaps. But I've found less need for them over time. I'm mainly a news
junkie and my current stuff like Dolphin with Java off, Firefox with
extension help, etc. makes most sites palitable. Then for non-browser news
apps Play Store apps like Reader Mode can reduce most busy articles to
 text.

The other problem is the increased security on my current tablets refuse to
load my old apks and current online apks like the newsreader that was
recently suggested to me here. I suppose that is a good thing since I also
do sensitive bank and investment stuff on this one...

On that topic, I'd bet nobody but maybe Andy Burns on this newsgroup is
aware of what Google is doing to make it ever harder to sideload apps.
 <https://i.postimg.cc/4dj6YnZw/photo-2026-08-22-10-07-15.jpg>

It used to be, for example, that using Aurora to scrape the Google Play
repository was fine, as the app is *exactly* the same app either way.
 a. Same app
 b. Same hash
 c. Same everything

But wait... there's more.
 <https://i.postimg.cc/LXGtJhR1/shizushell-installer.jpg>

When you install an app via Aurora, unless you set some switches, it gets:
 Installer = Aurora Store <com.aurora.store>
Actual installer = Aurora Store <com.aurora.store>

But when you install the exact same app (same hash!) via Google Play store:
Installer = Google Play Store <com.android.vending>
Actual installer = Google Play Store <com.android.vending>

Up until recently nobody cared what the internal metadata said about who
installed an app, but Google is making it harder and harder every day for
that installer to NOT be com.android.vending (which is the Google Play
Store app).

Luckily, for now, there are workarounds, but it's a never ending battle
as the last thing Google wants it to NOT be just like Apple is in terms of
locking down the device so that everything has to come from the App Store.

It's a topic of its own how to defeat Google's new sideloading protections.

What sites do you like to get your news?

I get my news on Windows via a web browser that is more than two feet tall,
but I don't like clutter and things like news.google.com won't run on my PC
(because of the vpn and other privacy stuff).

I also require my news to be balanced, just like I am, which means Fox news
is out of the question, as is MSNBC, or Al Jazeira for that matter.

I get news from, for example, the 'lite' sites, such as:
 <https://lite.cnn.com/>
 <https://text.npr.org/>
 <https://www.nbcnews.com/>
 <https://abcnews.com/International>
 <https://time.com/section/world/>
 etc.

I get my world news overseas from one site per country, e.g., being from
Germany myself, I get most of my related news from DW, but there are others
 <https://www.dw.com/en/top-stories/s-9097> Germany
 <https://www.euronews.com/news/international> EU
 <https://www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/> UPI
 <https://www.bbc.com/news/world> BBC
 etc.

What lite sites do you prefer to get your news from?
Note the "lite" sites work great on Android but I read 'em on Windows.

Android Apps: Smartnews, Flipboard. Browser: Mostly local radio & TV sites
which of course have national and world news. And The Register for tech
stuff. I also have a (gasp) paid subscription to my local AZ Republic and
read it using its Android app which shows either a photo copy of the paper
edition and quite readable on this tablet or a text version. My favorite
 part? The funnies of course...

I mainly use the Android browsers Dolphin (Java off) and Firefox (with
extensions). Then of course I have the installed Android Reading Mode app
which reduces most everything to text (or voice) and works with both apps
 and browsers.

We screw up all the time. And it's not just Google. No biggie. If you didn't
catch my last screw up I listed my current 4 toys and called them 3. IMO
what I said about Usenet language cops that make fun of those mistakes is

What I've found on Android (also not well labeled, I guess, given that
it didn't present itself as an Android feature, and could well be a less
trustable preinstalled third-party app...), was something that did not
compare to Samsung's own wifi-based transfer, as "Quick Share" seemed to
require Bluetooth? I may have overlooked something, for sure...

(At the same time, Android 15 couldn't accept a file transfer over
Bluetooth proper!?)

Hi Nuno,

Let us know if there's anything you can't get on or off Android as we've
attacked that problem a billion times, over the years, in this Android ng.

I have iOS and Android devices, and I have little to no trouble getting
anything on or off Android (except, in the newer Android versions, if it's
in protected storage), but I do run into brick walls with getting things
onto and off of iOS, unless they're just media.

There are many solutions we've discussed on the iOS newsgroups, one of
which is localsend, but if you're on Windows, iOS natively does SMB better
than Android does.

In fact, after years of asking on the iOS groups what does iOS do that
Android doesn't, that's the only thing iOS does, that Android can't do.
