I have set the email on the account wjwlsn to the one you're using here, and
sent a password reset email. So you should be able to log in. I also had to
change the email on wjwlsn_94460 because you can't have two accounts with the
same email.

I set it up so accounts are created from usenet postings but with the account
email blank. This is just to stop random usenet posters getting spam emails if
people used the contact form on squte or reset their password, but I might
have to rethink that if enough people want to 'claim' their userid.

In theory it updates the UI once an hour from usenet, but sometimes there are
problems with the script and I have to restart it.

Awesome, thank you much. I was able to get it set up the way I want it. Now
I'm posting this from s'qute. I do have one suggestion... the post voting
buttons are pretty small, and in a slightly awkward spot. This is probably
fine when using a mouse, but I'm quite frequently using a big fat thumb on a
touchscreen interface; this is problematic. Would it be much trouble to make
the buttons bigger, separate them from each other a little bit, and move them
away from the original poster's userid?

Also, I have a feeling that more than enough people will want to claim their
userids, so an easier way for users to do it themselves will probably save you
a lot of effort in the long run.

Hi wjwlsn

Thanks for the feedback.

I have updated the code so users account emails are the same as in their usenet
posts.

In practice this means there is now a procedure to 'claim' your account on squte.com:

1. find your posts on squte.com and copy the user-name it has created for you. <br\>
2. click the 'Request new password' link on the login form at the top right.<br\>
3. paste the user-name in (/not/ your email) and click 'Email password'.<br\>
4. follow the instructions in the email you'll get.<br\>

If this doesn't work or you have used a munged email in your posts you'll still
have to contact me.<br\>

The button size issue is next on my todo list, I'll keep you updated.

Incidentally you can use simple html in your post eg <br\> / etc. Squte.com will
try to do a translation to plaintext when posting to usenet, and it looks better
on the site.

I got the slashes the wrong way round in my html - how ironic in a thread about
/.

The voting buttons are now larger and on the right. Unfortunately there isn't a
separate site for mobile, so things like this are a bit of a compromise.

You are probably aware of this anyhow but in case it slipped your mind...

"This profile has been automatically created by squte from usenet
postings. The existence of this user profile does not imply the user has
created an account on squte.com. See squte.com/usenet_user_profile for
details."

The mentioned squte.com/usenet_user_profile is a link that returns a 404
message...maybe the link is mangled or you haven't created the page yet.

Thanks for reminding me, it was on my todo list but there are a few bugs with the
site so I hadn't gotten round to doing it yet.

The page is up now so the link should work.

But I hit some snags when I tried to claim my account.

My username here is q.kontinuum. My account-link ends on "q-kontinuum".
My username for login seems to be "q kontinuum". This is all a bit confusing :-)

My home IP address was apparently blocked as supposedly belonging to a block
used for spamming. To unblock, a real name was required. Is there a deeper
sense in it? Would a spammer likely give a real name / how would you check this?
I want to stay pseudonymous. I used a different internet connection instead of
giving my real name.

> 2. click the 'Request new password' link on the login form at the top right.<br\>

I did this. With "q kontinuum" I got a message that I should get the password mailed
now. Unfortunately I did not yet receive a password, but I'm not sure as well
if you have the correct mail address. I messed up my client configuration and had
an invalid mail address configured for some hours. However, the posts assigned to
"q kontinuum" were posted with the correct address (unless I overlooked a typo)

Nevertheless, can you set the mail to achsis_of_elvis@yahoo.com? I can offer to
post an identification message on /.org.

There weren't when I checked about a year ago. There is a good ssh client for android,
so you can always ssh to a box with slrn installed.

> My username here is q.kontinuum. My account-link ends on "q-kontinuum". My username

Usernames can't have special characters in them, because nyms are often links and
most users wouldn't know that %35%37 was the same person as "#%".

The space character is an exception because nyms often have spaces in them and most
people (geeks anyway) should know that %20 is a space.

So Usenet nyms get characters that can't be in urls replaced with a space. This
is on purpose.

I don't know why your profile link is squte.com/~q-kontinuum. I'd expect it to
be squte.com/~q%20kontinuum, so it looks like a bug.
Its the same for squte.com/~true-satan, squte.com/~oregonian-haruspex etc.

> To unblock, a real name was required.

You don't have to give your real name, but type the actual string "real name".
The captcha has to be confusing enough to trick bots.

 I've changed it now.

> Unfortunately I did not yet receive a password,

The log shows several emails sent to achsis_of_elvis@yahoo.com. Are they in your
spam folder? Or is there another address you could use?

That needs a longer reply than I've time for now, I'll answer later if that's
OK.

Sorry, ignore all this. I'm talking rubbish.
I forgot I updated the rules a while ago, nyms /can/ have some special characters
like '.' in. I forgot to update the code that "cleans up" usenet nyms at the same
time, so this is a bug.

Also "#%" is url encoded as %23%25. doh.

I suggest after you log in, you change your nym to "q.kontinuum", which you can
do on your profile page.

cheers

Aehm... This is a bit embarressing for me now... I usually don't use the yahoo
mail address at all (it was created as a thow-away address years ago for
some forum.

In short: I got it still wrong. I tested it with my regular mail account,
and the address is achsis_of_elvis@yahoo.co.uk (corrected in my news reader
as well now.)

Thanks for the explanations (Yes, I read your followup on your post as well.)
Could you please change my mail address on squte.com for me?

In reply to#431

> different?

Well, from a technical point of view there are big differences.
soylentnews.org is slashcode, which is perl running directly on the DB. squte.com
is in php on top of a high level framework (Drupal).

When I first set up squte.com as a slashdot look-a-like, I tried to use slashcode
but found it a mess (see [2]). I switched to drupal with the slashcoments module
[1].

I think a single dev could easily get a slashclone stable in a couple of days using
slashcomments. Instead, soylentnews claim they have 30 devs, they've been fighting
slashcode for a week, and still only have an alpha site.

The problems with slashcode must of already been fixed by the other slashdot clones,
barrapunto.com, kuro5hin.org, etc. so the easiest fix would be to ask those sites
for a snapshot of their code. But they haven't even contacted these sites, suggesting
NIH syndrome.

Of course if they really just wanted to have a slashdot alternative - and didn't
care who was running it - they could just redirect their domain to "www.kuro5hin.org/section/tech"
and that's it. Problem solved.

There are even bigger idealogical differences.

My vision for squte.com is to avoid the trap of 'community' sites that are actually
owned by a business.

If you contribute to these sites you may think you are giving to the community,
actually you are just donating IP to an entity that has a legal duty to it's shareholders
to exploit it for maximum profit. The second it becomes more profitable to make
the site less community-friendly, or put it behind a paywall, it will happen.

IOW switching from slashdot to soylentnews doesnt solve the basic problem.

Personally I will only contribute to a 'community site' if either all content
is duplicated on Usenet (or a similar archived, open, network) or there is some
guarantee they won't change the site against the users wishes.

soylentnews could have the site run by an elected foundation, instead it seems to
be a friend-of-a-friend network of favouritism.

I lurked on ###altslashdot for a while and just heard arguing about who was going
to be allowed on the alpha site (and so get the lowest ids) - the decision was to
base it on 'who you know' which led one user to describe soylentnews as "a hacker masonic lodge"
and quit the project in disgust.

squte.com is an attempt to build a distributed discussion network that combines
the free, open nature of Usenet with the relevance and interest of slashdot. I don't
see soylentnews.org helping in this.

regards,
~tdk

That's what I suspected, although I did not check the code myself.

I didn't take a closer look, but the last article there seems to be a
long rant on Steve Jobs without any good arguments. So the site (at
least section/tech) seems to be dead for good. (I'm not a Jobs-Fan,
but I think a critical obtuary is not the same as that rant. I didn't
check the policies on that site maybe the last article was just posted
by a troll and swarming it with ex-slashdotters might help.

Can I ask what are the expenses (besides time/effort) to run squte?
(Well, obviously I can. Will you answer? :-)) Does it break even by
advertisement? (Not interested if you make anything on top, that would
be well deserved for the effort anyway)

Would a download link from their database suffice?

I suspected something like that, but didn't experience it in their
forums yet. So, I will keep an eye on their site as well and hope
traffic will also grow in this newsgroup.

Good luck with that :-)

I used to use kuro5hin a lot, but you're right it looks dead now. My point was
just that it uses the same code base as slashdot.

> Can I ask what are the expenses (besides time/effort) to run squte?
The hosting and domain cost 180 USD a year.

> Does it break even by advertisement?
No. I only recently turned on google ads, and my expected income is a massive $2
a year.

> Would a download link from their database suffice?
This isn't an absolute rule, just a strong preference, e.g. I do post on slashdot
occasionally.
It's not about saving my own posts (I keep a copy of everything I post anyway),
but not liking a community to be hijacked.
If a site had an API to get content from it and promised to keep it available, I'd
be happy with that.
eg Stackoverflow.com licences all user posts under a CC licence, and I'm sure there
are people scraping it. So if the owners ever broke it some way, a replacement would
pop up quickly with the some content. The fact that this can happen means stackoverflow
is unlikely to pull a slashdot beta.

> I suspected something like that, but didn't experience it in their forums yet.
Actually I have to back down from this - serves me right for posting when hung over.
Their wiki was recently updated to imply it's likely to be non-profit and going
to be run by the community, so I hope it works out that way.

thanks.

Hi 2phar,

I have updated the account email for '2phar' to your email. You should get a password
reset email soon.

Unfortunately there is no process at the moment for people to claim their Usenet
accounts apart from asking me.

The best solution is to set up the user account with the email used in their posts.
Then people can just click the reset password link.

I will work on this next.

This still won't help when people use fake emails in posts, but I can't see any
easy fix for this.

cheers

Thank you for your flattery, but it still needs polish.

I've had a site on squte.com since 2007. Originally it was just a crude usenet
archive.

About a year ago I completely rebuilt the site.

Usenet used to be an anarchic, free, intellectual commons full of life and
debate. but its being replaced by the enclosure[1] of the internet by
facebook, twitter etc.

I wanted to help to preserve the spirit of usenet, not just historic posts.

What is destroying Usenet is spam, trolling and flames, but the Slashdot mod
system effectively filters out off-topic posts. So I reasoned if you combined
a Usenet portal with Slashdot Karma you would get the free, anarchic, open,
energy of usenet with the relevance and interest of Slashdot.

Initially I tried to bolt my Usenet archive back-end on to slashcode, but I
found slashcode hard to modify.

So I changed to using Drupal + the slashcomments module [2].

This worked better. I ended up modifying slashcomments so much that I replaced
it with my own custom code on top of Drupal, although it has a few bits of
slashcomments still in e.g. the css files.

If you are coming to squte.com from Slashdot, you might be interested in this
part of the help page:

Differences with the 'other place'

Some users have defected to s'qute from the 'other place'. These are the
differences.

Anyone can moderate (vote) at any time.

There is no 'metamoderation' - karma is based purely on your posting history.

Moderation applies to stories as well as comments

There are no 'editors', or everyone is an editor.

Stories as well as comments may be hidden based on scores.

The 'karma' algorithm used is more sophisticated (IMHO) giving more relevant
comments.

There are only two moderation options 'up' and 'down' instead of funny,
insightful etc.

I really like this squte site. Bravo. To tdk, are you considering
mirroring comments posted to squte back onto Usenet? I realize there could
be issues there but it would be neat to make it totally bidirectional.

Thank you, though it still needs work

> To tdk, are you considering mirroring comments posted to squte back onto
Usenet?

This is already done. Unlike google groups, you need to set up a Usenet
account separately. To do this:

Go to eternal-september [1], and get an account.

log in to squte.com, click the 'My account' link then the 'News Host' tab.
Enter these details in:

Host Name: reader80.eternal-september.org

Login Name: your e-s username

Login Password: your e-s password

Host Port: 80

Then any comments you make on s'qute are automatically sent to Usenet.

There are some bugs that are still being fixed, e.g. line wrapping. I'll keep
people updated with posts on the site, unless people would prefer to discuss
it here.

Oops, sorry. That post seems to have got corrupted somehow. Here's what it
should have said:

Creating a new site doesn't solve the basic problem. The issue is common with
sites built with user content.

Typically the TOS of the site say it can do whatever it wants with the
content, and the site owners have an incentive to add as much advertising &
costs as possible. Users can vote with their feet and leave, but there is an
element of 'lock-in' because the user's profile, rep and history are on the
site. The longer the site goes on and the more content there is, the bigger
the lock-in and so the more the owners can squeeze the user-base. This makes
it inevitable that the site will add more and more burdens on users over time,
till a new site comes along that is - at first - friendlier to users. It
happened to experts-exchange (replaced with stackoverflow), to Geocities, and
now it's happening to Slashdot.

Adding a new site with a new owner just defers the problem, because the same
forces apply no matter how altruistic the initial owner. The only solution
that could work would be if the site wasrun by an elected foundation, but that
isn't ideal either.

What's needed is an open platform that isn't owned by one site. this is what
I've proposed with the Communion network [1]. This allows many sites to share
a discussion, if a user doesn't like what one site does, they can go to
another one and continue posting in the same thread with the same ID, the same
reputation etc.

In order to join the network, a site has to accept the licence that stops them
putting content behind a paywall or otherwise locking it in. Communion has a
user-moderation system similar to Slashdot's.

It all sounds good, and the link you gave
shows a clearly thought through system
wioth a good deal of detail to it (you
obviously put considerable thought and
effort into it). My positive feelings
towards the proposal notwithstanding who
will code this system, support the
development of the code and when will
even an early alpha be available?

In the mean time we have a workable
system tghat we are using right
now...there's nothing wrong with having a
dream, wonderful things can start that
way, but we also have to keep to
practical realities that are available at
this time.
