Why erk at it? 

For the sort of task its designed to do awk is very concise. It is easy 
to write and debug for anybody with a reasonable knowledge of regexes and 
any programming language that has C-like syntax. For my money it beats 
Perl into a cocked hat and leaves many 'report writers' grovelling in the 
dust, especially if they're called RPG3.
