It's just by-word and prints a sorted histogram. The real question is: After all, WJ promotes Java in his troll test cases, and then writes Scheme programs to challenge us Forthers. Of couse, Scheme is a much better language than Java: Scheme is interactive, Scheme allows metaprogramming, and Scheme has a very simple, prefix syntax (with parenthesis), which makes parsing Scheme easy. Just as Forth has a simple, postfix syntax (without parenthesis), which is even simpler to parse. Scheme requires no boilerplate, just like Forth. Actually, Lisp was one of the inspirations which led to Forth, and several Forth-like programming languages like PostScript or Factor are back in the functional programming realm; i.e. Forth is a not too close relative to Scheme. While Java is a member of that ugly, warty, Algol family. Dear WJ: You had your challenge, and you lost. Now shut up. We are bored by your easy challenges. Of course, the first by-character challenge was particularly easy, because to solve it, you only had to use core words, nothing more. No libraries (WJ's example uses a library), no fancy non-core words; just the words available on every tiny embedded controller running Forth. Controllers which certainly can't run Scheme, or even Java! -- Bernd Paysan "If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself" http://bernd-paysan.de/

I think following go program closely resembles what OP does and is
clear and readable.
package main
import (
"fmt"
"strings"
"sort"
"unicode"
)
func main() {
s := strings.ToLower(
`How badly did we fail? Well, out of the
Billions and Billions of cellphones which
have ever been produced, not a single one
has been programmed in Forth or uses Forth
as an operating system! 99.99% of them are
programmed in Java? Why? I mean I had a
$15 cell phone. The hardware is probably
more powerful than my old Atari ST. It has
a faster processor and more RAM. There are
only about 5 games for it, and they are all
programmed in Java. Truth be known, these
games are so slow as to be nearly
unplayable. It would be undoable to put
Llamatron on the thing, not because of the
small screen size, but because it just
couldn't use a Java library to push around a
sufficient number of sprites very well. I
know that all of you I.T. people in here are
just going to say buy a more expensive
phone, but that's not my point.`)
words := make(map[string]string)

arr = append(arr,F{k,v})
}
}
sort.Sort(arr)
fmt.Print(arr)

THANK YOU ;-)
Another challenge to reconstruct a specification
from an undocumented program in a non-Forth language.

Looks pretty verbose and cumbersome. Here's a Python version:
================================================================
import re
from collections import defaultdict
msg = """How badly did we fail? Well, out of the
Billions and Billions of cellphones which
have ever been produced, not a single one
has been programmed in Forth or uses Forth

$15 cell phone. The hardware is probably
more powerful than my old Atari ST. It has
a faster processor and more RAM. There are
only about 5 games for it, and they are all
programmed in Java. Truth be known, these
games are so slow as to be nearly
unplayable. It would be undoable to put

couldn't use a Java library to push around a
sufficient number of sprites very well. I
know that all of you I.T. people in here are
just going to say buy a more expensive
phone, but that's not my point."""
def main():
d = defaultdict(int)
for w in (re.sub('[^a-z]','',w.lower()) for w in msg.split()):
if w: d[w] += 1
for w,n in sorted(d.items(),key=lambda(k,v):v,reverse=True):
print "%-20s %s"%(w,'*'*n)

Alex Wegel is a loyal member of Elizabeth Rather's cult --- he hates that people use libraries of general-purpose code, and he demands that everybody write every program from scratch. Who really cares about 80KB on a modern desktop-computer that has 1GB and costs $300? We're not using $2000 Apple-IIc computers anymore. The whole purpose of upgrading to the 8088 and MS-DOS in the late 1980s was to provide more memory. The Commodore-64 (1Mhz 6510) routinely out-performed the IBM-PC (4.77Mhz 8088) in regards to speed --- what people cared about was getting more memory --- the 640KB that the MS-DOS computers offered was what made business software possible. Of course, Elizabeth Rather completely failed to understand that business software needs lots of memory. PolyForth was restricted to 64KB for the entire system (compiler, dictionary, application code and application data) --- the brave PolyForth programmer could have an MS-DOS machine with full memory (640K) and the program had less memory available to it than an Apple-IIc --- and his program ran slower than an equivalent Apple-IIc program (partly because the 8088 was slow, and partly because PolyForth used ITC). It was obvious that PolyForth was ported over to the 8088 from an old 64KB 1970s-vintage system (most likely Charles Moore's PDP-11 implementation) by somebody who did not bother to learn about the 8088's segment registers (although segments are really not that complicated, and everybody else in the world learned how they worked without difficulty). It was during the MS-DOS period that Forth lost all credibility, and this was primarily due to PolyForth being a useless toy, combined with Forth Inc. owning the name "Forth," which gave the general programming population the impression that all Forthers were incompetent. The reputation of the Forth has never recovered --- Forth Inc. is a boat anchor that has held the entire Forth community down --- to a large extent, the comp.lang.forth crowd is still living in the 1970s and talking about how much potential Forth has, not noticing that the rest of the world abandoned Forth during the MS-DOS period (late 1980s). Elizabeth Rather is personally to blame for Forth being an "epic fail." So long as Elizabeth Rather continues to be accepted as the "leading expert" on Forth, Forth will continue to be an epic fail. Elizabeth Rather will continue to surround herself with cultists such as Alex Wegel who wrings his hands in despair about 80KB being used by a general-purpose library --- and the real world will continue to dismiss Forth as a toy language. P.S. None of this should be construed to imply that I agree with WJ in any way --- he is no smarter than Alex Wegel --- just another non-programming troll.
