It would be pretty weird to write the low level code in C and call it
from Ada. C has pointers but it doesn't have any of the stuff you
usually want assembler for, like machine intrinsics.

Heh, I'm used to write low level code in C. For example ,back in DOS
days I wrote Unisys T27 emulator completely in C.
It configured UART and interrupt handler was in C. Though
I must admit ,know, on Linux, I prefer assembler ;)

Que?

1) Assembly doesn't need machine intrinsics. High-level languages do.
2) Major C compilers support inlined assembly. This usually suffices.
3) In general, there is very little that can't be done in C.

GCC does have machine intrinsics, specifically: atomic swap-and-compare
etc., which are extremely useful for spinlocks and so forth. And as you
point out, most compilers have (and have had for many, many years)
inline assembly functionality. I wish GCC's wasn't so peculiar, but
that's life.

Indeed, there is little which can't be done in C; but there's also
little that can't be done in any sufficiently low-level language, if you
have the time and inclination.

Interesting; I went through almost the identical process with 8th on

I spawn the interpreter thread from an Application object).

Yes, that's very similar to the way I do it now.

Forth never had the backing behind it that Java, and C before it, did.

As far as they know, they have both made a lot of money over the years with Forth. That sounds like success to me!

??? Ah! So when you talk about fail, you mean fail to be popular? Ok, I agree. Forth is not popular. But it is a good language, as we all know.

> How bad did we fail? Well, out of the Billions and Billions of cellphones which have ever been produced, not a single one has been programmed in Forth or uses Forth as an operating system!

Billions of them do contain Forth software though. There was/is a system that was developed for the network operators. It runs underneath, or at least, at the same level as the operating system itself (and is therefore very difficult to detect) and periodically sends info back to the network operators. It is written in Forth. It caused quite a lot of controversy as it was seen as spyware. I can't remember the name of it now, but it has been mentioned here before.

Though bear in mind, there is a specific edition of Java for embedded systems. However, like you, I couldn't recommend it - Java is simply too deeply abstracted to afford any degree of confidence in its reliability. You can't see what it's doing, unlike Forth or C.

you could also say client server computing
java was mostly for web client server and at the time the net explosion made it something people could use
forth even now seems to have no web server or appserver even as sad as java tomcat
how do you even do client server in forth?
jeff fox wrote about multi cpu forth lina allowing some kind of awesome client server, but would that work on a website? since you dont have access to someones pc ram I dont think? maybe u do through browser??
maybe there could be a forth firefox plugin that would be even more powerful cient server than javascript and current node.js that seem to be big now

Friendly greetings !

Forth isn't dead yet, i'm learning Forth, here is why, what's needed :

I'm not really happy with the dozens of language i learned.
I created and trashed tons of unfinished language.
Usually using ruby, java, C, or jruby.
I like Erlang, Lisp, functional languages in general.

I decided to learn the "JVM bytecode" using Jasmin : http://jasmin.sourceforge.net/
OMG the JVM is Stack-based \o/

It's a lot of fun and really intuitive. Kinda annoying to write because it's very very hard to debug.

I know forth by name since a long time and i had to write tiny bit of forth-ish when programming Sun NVRAM. But know i decided to give it a go.

Of course i ran into some troubles :
- the compilers are OLD!
- Documentation is OLD! ("Property of US Army" documentation that explain how to load forth code using punch card ? huh... ok...)
- Company supporting forth are dead or dying.

Did you notice that the LISP-familly is back on track ? It's hype ! Every cool kids want to learn Clojure. Clojure and Scala are replacing Java code. I see JRuby code in production too, mixed with java, clojure, scala, you-name-it.

I spent ~3h looking for a "Forth on JVM", even experimental code on github would do the trick.
Couldn't find any... Ok then.. gforth ... *sigh*

I'm a 36yo sysadmin & DBA, not a "pro" coder. Today we get a server with 32GB of RAM, 4TB if disk and 4(*2) cores for ~40 EURO/month. I don't care if a JVM-Forth use a few more MB of ram than it should because of the JVM.

My problem, however, is that it doesn't exist at all.
Peoples want a .jar that works, nothing else. JVM-Forth, Scala, Java or Clojure ? who care ?

And Clojure is a great demonstration.

I asked if i could do some Clojure at work : "You know it ? Awesome ! Do it !"
Now if i tell them i want to do some Forth... well, i won't even ask. I can't even do C (even if we have more people that know C compared to Clojure).

But as long as it's JVM-based : sure, have fun !

So now you know what to do. :)

*hugs*

This is because JVM is a stack-based machine, but *not* a Forth VM. The
main difference is that Forth has a separate return stack, while JVM has
just one single stack. The other thing is that a JVM compiler is a batch
compiler. This is the punch card thing you are probably talking about: Java
is still following the punch card model of writing code in an editor,
running it through a compiler, and then execute the resultung binary. This
is not the way of Forth, which is an interactive system. You can work
around that in Java, Clojure does so, but it isn't designed that way.
Working around the single-stack obstacle is considerably harder.

Therefore, it is not possible to do a Forth directly on JVM. You can write
a Forth compiler in Java, but it won't directly generate JVM byte code.
Therefore, the only thing you'll find on JVM are Forth interpreters:

c2.com/cgi/wiki?OtherLanguagesForTheJavaVm

Yes, it's in the Forth FAQ.
So what ?

The JVM is stack based and run on CPUs that aren't stack based.
Most (all?) language running on the JVM aren't stack based.
The JVM almost-but-not-quite fit the need so it shouldn't be done ? Meh

> Working around the single-stack obstacle is considerably harder.
> Therefore, it is not possible to do a Forth directly on JVM.

Again, so what ? Sure it's hard because you can't do it directly using
directly the jvm stack. But it's not impossible.

Lisp did it. Both compiler and interpreter. On a stack based VM running

The average programmer/manager/CTO : yes.
Unless you're in embedded stuff (probably, i'm not even sure about it)

This fact hasn't changed since.

Sure. That has no meaning to the discussion we have: register based CPUs
can emulate stack based VMs. Unfortunately, the other way round isn't true.
Which is why people build register based CPUs.

> Most (all?) language running on the JVM aren't stack based.

That's because the JVM is not suited for a stack based language. It is an
intermediate language for Algol-like languages, and other languages with
locals and lexical scope. Your argument is proving what? That it is not
suitable for stack based languages? That's what I'm saying.

> The JVM almost-but-not-quite fit the need so it shouldn't be done ? Meh

It's not even an "almost", it is pretty far from being useful for
implementing Forth. It looks like it might be a fit if you have very little
understanding of the topic, but if you look closer, you see that it isn't
useful. As long as you don't have a separate return stack, it might look a
bit like Forth, but is something quite different.

Forth interpreters in Java have been done. But that's not what you were
asking for: you were asking for a batch compiler to procude JVM .jar files.

No big problem, these are languages with lexically scoped local variables,
the thing the JVM is built for.

BTW: There is a Forth-like language for CLR:

www.codeproject.com/Tips/1752/Delta-Forth-NET

It is a batch compiler, not a traditional Forth; in so far it is pretty
limited. It actually is derived from a similar approach to JVM, which
apparently was abandoned by the author a long time ago. It is missing a
significant part of what we call Forth and why we like Forth. And it still
doesn't use CLR's native stack as Forth data stack, because that is simply
not feasible.

There are interpreters for Forth on .NET, too. The whole thing with these
run time environments is that they have been done by people who are still in
the late 1950s, and have been stuck with the Borroughts B5500, when it comes
to stack-based languages.

Check this TelTalk : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp0HIF3SfI4

Here is the thing : "People buy why you do it not what you do"
If you don't understand this, you're screwed.

I told you what i needed to use Forth in production.
If i can't have it, well, forth will be my esoteric-toy-language
i'll use in my spare time.

There is another (old) language that became popular without jvm target :
Erlang.

"Build massively scalable soft real-time systems" you don't need big
marketing budget to find this catch-phrase. I like Erlang,
it's in production and playing a major critical role thanks to RabbitMQ.

I believe i can solve some of my problems more easily using multiple stack.
But only SOME of my problems so i need interoperability. That's exactly
why there is so many different languages on the JVM and why many different
language are used in the same application.

I have a very very simple idea, it really is stupidly simple :
1) you create a list of functions
2) you have many stacks
3) you run a function
4) the function pop once a (or many) stack
5a) the output of the function decide which function is ran next
5b) OR the next function is popped out of a "function stack" that contain
    reference to functions.

SIMPLE! I believe i can implement that kind of functionality using forth.
But i need some readily available stuff.
Because i'm not willing to reimplement HTTP/ZeroMQ/JSON/XML/...
Running on the JVM provide access to gazillions of library.

I know why I'm doing Forth: I want to use a system that is *simple enough*
to be understandable by me in total, and at the same time *not* restricting
me in any way, so I can solve new problems in a creative way. I don't want
to use the new COBOL for uninspired programmers who solve old problems by
writing wrappers around already bloated libraries; I call this "onion
programming", and it makes me shed tears. Yes, you can now buy a cheap
multi-core multi-GHz CPU with gigabytes of memory, and then run a program
that runs about as good and fast as 20 years ago a program ran on a MHz CPU
with a few hundred kilobytes of memory. Yeah, you couldn't write the code
back then...

> Because i'm not willing to reimplement HTTP/ZeroMQ/JSON/XML/...

This is your "why", it says that you don't want to go out of bed in the
morning, because you want to avoid doing things that need to be done. It's
pretty uninspiring. I'm currently doing something that is replacing the
things on your list, because the current Internet is broken beyond repair.
I'm doing this in Forth, when I'm successful, all your Java libraries are
useless legacy.

> Running on the JVM provide access to gazillions of library.

All you are telling me *what* I'm supposed to be doing. Shut up and go back
to the youtube video you sent me. You are not telling me what I'm supposed
to do, because that's my business, I know that. You can't sell me your idea
starting with stupid implementation details that only show how little you
know.

Gforth on Android must deal with Java, because it runs in an environment
written in Java. How did I do this? By using JNI. I don't need a .jar
file to talk to Java, I can do that with JNI. This gives me a good
performing Forth environment, with all the interactive stuff, *and* all the
gazillions of Java libraries, if I wanted them (I don't, I only want a few
critical interfaces to OS services). And, way more important: It gives me
good and high performance native access to OpenGL (with Gforth's C
bindings), which is much better than the Java/Dalvik interface to it (that's
the interface everybody hates and why most of the Android games are using
some C libraries to do the graphics).

So the thing you really want is doable, but you aren't inspiring me, because
you are only telling me what you want me (or some other Forth guru) to do.
I'm not going to buy this uninspired rambling by someone who wants all the
hard work being done by other people. That's the typical Java programmer.
I don't think Forth is the right thing for lazy idiots; it always was an
amplifier, which amplified the capabilities of the good programmers, and
also the mistakes of the bad ones. If a bad programmer uses Forth, disaster
is only outcome. Don't. Stay with Java, disaster is unavoidable, but with
Java, you can't screw up that badly.

In any case, you are someone who's demanding others to do things, not
willing and not able to do this yourself, so unless you pay a lot of money
to get what you want, you are just a waste of time for us.

You forgot the spirit of the OP :)
I'm not demanding ANYTHING. I'm telling you what, imho, you should do if
want forth to stay alive. Since a year or two programmers are learning
new languages, writing new languages and rediscovering old languages.
And the languages targeting the JVM are very very quickly adopted at work.

Anyway... Do whatever you want, because : who care ?

We had this discussion over and over again. When Perl was the hot language
of the year, we had people here who told us that Forth would be better off
if it was more like Perl. With regexps and with a Perl-like library server
full of ready-made stuff. Fortunately, today, Perl is pretty much a
phenomenon of the past.

Yes, demand whatever you want, because who cares. I'm sick of people who
don't do anything themselves but have tons of good advice to other people
who are doing stuff, and well, they are doing it all wrong.
