You'd program it like a server, maybe with a web interface so you could control it remotely, etc. They use a lot more power (several watts) than Launchpad-style boards and they aren't as realtime-friendly but for something like plant watering, that shouldn't be an issue. Hey Simon, are you going to have a real time clock on your board? That's something missing from almost all these small embedded boards.

Yes, that is a nice idea to make this device controllable over the net. But if to forget about net access, to use the Linux for this task seems to much for me.

I suppose it depends on what you're used to, but IMHO the Linux approach is potentially a lot less work, since you have so many more OS services and machine resources available. The web control part is quite easy, for example. On the downside, the board is more expensive.

Not just to make a plant-watering system with a less work. Using PC and writing web interface sounds rather boring to me.

I'm just more convinced by applications where using a microcontroller is necessary (or at least has significant benefits) rather than only possible. An example might be battery powered applications where a big board would use too much power.

FISH exposes the built in SYSTICK timer with a generalized word: DELAY ( n value -- ) where value is the reload value and n is the number of reloads before returning. This is not a RTC functionality The plan is to make DELAY a SW routine and use the SYSTICK with a interrupt handler that will probably always increment a VAR and either set a semaphore or execute a handler. Suggestions are welcome. I currently assume the user can reset the tick from whatever I default it to.

FISH exposes the built in SYSTICK timer with > a generalized word: ... Thanks. The intended question was whether the board would have a hardware RTC, so the application could know the current date and time. Lots of things I want to do require this. Adafruit.com has a few add-on RTC boards but they are relatively big and expensive. I've never understood why so many boards omit this. I can get a digital watch at the flea market for $2 that includes everything, and on an embedded board I'd expect all that's needed is a crystal. The G2 Launchpad comes with a 32 khz crystal that you have to solder onto the board yourself, but I get the impression that once you've done that, you can at least program a software RTC.

RTC on the I2C bus. Designed and laid out - not yet produced and tested. That is the beauty of I2C. You add what you need to the system by plugging in boards.

You can start it easily with 4e4th and the 4E4th-IDE. How is your situation to get hardware? Do you have access to distributors like DigiKey? May be you open a NEW TOPIC at c.l.f., tell your ideas, and give a list of things you need. I am sure you will get help for your project.

Thanks for this assumption. I will need to look closer on this board. Right now I'm not sure if it fits my needs because of its very tight memory constraints. As a way of developing the project I'd like to create a system with ability to attach several moisture sensors and electromagntic valves, and display and set specific modes for each pair of them on an indicator. BTW can a program write to flash memory or only to RAM? > > How is your situation to get hardware? > Do you have access to distributors like DigiKey? It seems that I can buy all the needed stuff from local sellers. The price is usually about 1.5 times higher than if buy in USA, but for such low quantity I need the delivery cost kills the benefit. > May be you open a NEW TOPIC at c.l.f., tell your ideas, and give a list > of things you need. I am sure you will get help for your project. Thanks. Perhaps, when I stop talking and really start working on this project I follow your advice. :)

I believe both, but Dirk would know. Dirk, there is a a couple of newer MSP430 Launchpad boards with more resources now--do you think of supporting those? > It seems that I can buy all the needed stuff from local sellers. Maybe those could be easier for you to get. Strange as it may seem, but it is not a fact, that delivery from Bulgaria will be cheaper and quicklier.

Michael did the 4e4th based on CamelForth. He doesn't have any free capacity now. So, if anyone who is interested to adapt 4e4th to other MSP430 versions, please let me know. The problem is that TI doesn't make it easy to migrate from one MSP430 version to another. Different MSP430 versions are not compatible.

The problem is that TI doesn't make it easy to migrate from one MSP430 version to another. Different MSP430 versions are not compatible. I'm not overly familiar with the MSP430 other than what I've read from others over the years. What is not compatible between the variations on MSP430? That would normally be a big no-no for a chip maker. -- Rick

The MSP430F2012 was to small for embedded Forth, so I got my program done by cut and paste parts from TI's code examples. The production runs since three years now. My hope was that some day there will be a version with more memory. And there it was, the MSP430G2553 two years ago. Problem was, my simple C program didn't run on this part. TI had changed a lot of I/O names and their functionality. Then Michael ported CamelForth, and he got the I/O which I needed (ADC, SPI, UART, PWM) running on 4e4th. Michael also ported 4e4th to the MSP430FR5739, that works fine, but much more expensive than the MSP430G2553. Then came the MSP430F5529 LaunchPad. 4e4th doesn't run on this micro yet, because it is different again, and the flasher is different, too. Believe it or not, TI doesn't make it easy to work with different MSP's. This is no problem for TI, because there is IAR, Energia, and CCS, these companies do the adapting work with their C compilers. To them these differences don't matter, and the user normally doesn't switch between different micros.

To them these differences don't matter, and the user normally doesn't switch between different micros. Actually it *does* matter to users to be able to port code between different processors in the same family. Back when the ARM had not yet taken over the world I had a discussion in one of these groups about the reason for working with ARMs rather than proprietary CPUs. I said that being able to use the same CPU from many vendors is a great advantage. Someone made the point that CPUs usually don't matter as all the details are taken care of by the compiler vendors. But the peripherals differ a lot between brands while remaining the same within a line of MCU chips and often nearly the same between lines of the same brand. He had a point. So it is very surprising to find that the MSP doesn't do this. It is not uncommon to reuse code on different projects, just as you tried to do. For that to be a messy exercise is very unusual. I know Atmel chips are largely compatible within a line. They even take care to document differences that are likely to trip you up. -- Rick

In fact I have a LOT of designs that are awaiting documentation. It may already be done.

At least the boards were cheap ;-). Paul, please download http://www.4e4th.com/4E4th-IDE.zip or go to http://www.4e4th-ide.org/ - you don't have to deal with the hassles of getting a programming environment running for these little embedded boards. It's already there! Written in Forth! And you can download it for free. You will see how easy it is to get Forth onto TI's G2 Launchpad, it's a matter of seconds. No big overhead, easy to use. Enjoy!
