You don't need to have TI's G2-LaunchPad for testing, any other serial target will do it. If I have a project where a terminal connection is needed, I start with the 4E4th-IDE and add stuff or change it until it fits. Feel free to contact me for help. Cheers, Dirk.

And surprisingly enough I'm an engineer (aerospace) and learned a LOT of Forth from that book. And the facilities we provide are incredibly limited. We are limited to 15K for what we are doing. In a way a throwback to the Starting Forth days. What can you do in 1K of code? Quite a lot it turns out. Enough for quite a few applications.

Every word of it. Speaking from my own experience with FISH, I can say that Simon's Blinky example was perfect. Following that simple model I was able to activate and use the remaining I/O pins of the 1114 as well as the two 32-bit timers. An example or two can answer a thousand questions. Leo Brodie wrote a good book, but I would have preferred the pamphlet: Take out most of the text and all of the cartoons, and just include the code snippets.

I tend to like the latter at the beginning, but when I get stuck on fundamentals, then The Department of Fuller Explanation is the next go-to. I think Modern documentation is this way because (i) it's easier for a subject matter expert to presume a level of knowledge closer to their own, and (ii) because the modern way in which knowledge is organised seems much more slanted to communication within silos. The exception are often blog posts, where the audience is in most case cannot be assumed to have specific knowledge. Ideally, there would be two versions of Starting Forth --- the cartoon book for Non-Programmers, and the Starting Forth for Programmers. Assad

I simply didn't need the cafeteria tray metaphor to explain a stack. It got in the way. For the most part, appropriately selected sample code would have sufficed. The book has its place. No question about it.

And that puts us at the mercy of M'soft or > Apple or Linux or what have you. It breaks our processor independence. Maybe I has expressed my wishes not properly. I mean, that if I write something simple with your board, I expect it should be simple and doesn't require to write a lot of code. If to take your "I2C-4SW-4LED LED-Test.txt" then to complete the similar task by myself all I'd expect is to write is something like: INCLUDE i2c I2C0-INIT : WRITE-BYTE-4LED ( Write Byte ) I2C-4SW-4LED-ADDR WRITE-I2C-BYTE ; : DISPLAY-LED-LIGHTS 10d 0 DO FEh WRITE-BYTE-4LED 100 MS FDh WRITE-BYTE-4LED 100 MS FBh WRITE-BYTE-4LED 100 MS F7h WRITE-BYTE-4LED 100 MS F0h WRITE-BYTE-4LED 100 MS FFh WRITE-BYTE-4LED 100 MS LOOP ; DISPLAY-LED-LIGHTS , – without necessety to implement the I2C0-INIT and company by myself or copy them from your example and modifying to my needs. Putting Starting Forth and Thinking In Forth on your site without of the examples how to program your board is useless. Does it mean, that to use your board one must read these two books first and that is enough?

We all are much closer each to other than it looks at first glance. :) I'm in Pushkin, suburb of Saint-Petersburg. If your son is visiting Pushkin one day (and there is a beautiful Catherine's Palace, tha definitely worth to see) he is welcome to contact me.

It is a temporary phase. We have to start where we are. What you see is not the final plan. BTW we are interested in promoting WRITING Forth. Having people who can only use scripts does not help that.

Well, being a "scripting kiddie" is not obligatory permanent state. One day you are SK next day you are a hacker. :) 2. I believe, that possibility to use a language for scripting is a virtue. 3. I understand that you have reasons to claim that using Forth is much more productive over using C. But looking at Arduino example for blinking LED (http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/Blink) and at your's I2C-4SW-4LED LED-Test.txt doesn't seem to approve your claims.

The C code for the arduino is indeed very simple, but you have to get a big cumbersome software environment up on a host PC before you can start programming the Arduino itself. Then you have an annoying edit-compile-debug cycle every time you want to change the Arduino code. The idea of a resident Forth is that most of that complexity melts away and you program interactively, directly on the target chip.

Yes. Agree. But nevertheless. Having prepared modules of some standard procedures that allow to easy use this board and its peripherals would make it much more attractive for beginners, wouldn't they? And what is wrong in being attractive for beginners? At last, the today's beginners will make tomorrow.

Yes, of course I hope the board will come with modules like that. I can say that even as an experienced programmer of PC's and servers, I feel a bit hesitant at dealing with the hassles of getting a programming environment running for these little embedded boards. I have a few TI Launchpad boards sitting in my room that I haven't done anything with yet. I want to get around to running Mecrisp or some other Forth on them, but you know how that goes. At least the boards were cheap ;-).

At least the boards were cheap ;-). I'm in almost the same situation saving I have no boards yet. :) Well, for me the main problem with the boards and Forth was that I could not think of any practical application for then. Just to blink LEDs is definitely not enough reason. But this time it seems that I've found an idea for a project: an automatic watering system for plants. If only I will be able to build a device itself – being an application programmer for a long time I almost forgot how to hold the soldering iron properly. :)
