Hi Paul, I would agree with you that enq/ack is conceptually better, but to quote Wikipedia : " This is also software flow control and requires a device driver that knows about it." So this would prevent the system from working with a vanilla terminal. Not good if you want it to plug and play... They are supposed to know about CTS/RTS though probably there is lots of 3-wire SIO out there.

Hi Paul, The quote I gave was from http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Text-Terminal-HOWTO-11.html, not Wikipedia - sorry - this page also mentions that ENQ/ACK is understood by HP terminals, so that would rather limit your users... I would think that ENQ/ACK would have similar problems to XON/XOFF - if you lose a character you lose sync - OK you can re-send to check for the remote unit's presence, but there is still no guarantee that anything you send actually gets to through. What is required is a proper packet protocol, such as HDLC, with a re-try mechanism. Failing that, the standard CR , LF ( or CRLF ) to delimit packets has been used for a long, long, time, and is compatible with two major file formats : Win/DOS and *NIX. I'm not sure that ENQ/ACK gives you any more than this, in practice. Both XON/XOFF and hardware flow control can be super reliable, but only if both ends are properly designed under real time constraints. Any thoughts of "transparent" intermediate hardware must be abandonned. This is only possible under an operatings system like windows by writing your own interrupt driven device drivers. It is unlikely if USB is involved because it is essentially polled, and interference with other USB devices is built in. Not impossible, but nearly impossible wraps it up neatly. > >Best regards, >Howerd Oh boy, you were bottom posting. I think historically, hardwired serial ports didn't actually lose characters unless you overran the input fifo, but they could get backed up because of delays in the OS such as the user process being swapped out, so XOFF could take a long time to process. ENQ/ACK would block the sender until the ACK arrived, and if it never comes then the remote side has probably gone offline and you probably want to wait anyway. Plus as you say, you could always resend the ENQ if you don't get a reply in a reasonable amount of time. > What is required is a proper packet protocol, such as HDLC, with a > re-try mechanism. Well maybe. Once you're using a fancy protocol like HDLC I'd think you're sort of part way to a tethered Forth though. It's no longer something a person can type at with a terminal program.

XOFF has to be processed in the device interrupt routine. Andrew.

What we are finding with the FTDI interface to USB that we are using is that there is no reliable USB flow control that matches what was formerly available with strictly RS-232 interfaces. So far XON/XOFF seems to work the best. It all has to do with latencies, the block nature of USB transfers, buffers, etc. In any case we are getting good transfers at 115,200 with a 10ms end of line delay.

The FTDI driver give property pages under device manger that do everything but enable asynchronous usb models. FTDI native USB frame is 64 bytes. Choosing that does not help with flow control much. In FISH I issue an XON with EXPECT in QUERTY and in a few other judicial spots and have never had it hang from a garbled XON after a XOFF. FTDI CTS_RTS is another beast. Only thing I know is that they must be set low if they are connected to FTDI. After that the terminal works with flow control set to none or XON_XOFF. With the terminal set to HW Flow control the results are sub XON_XOFF so far. FTDI driver issue I an almost sure. they have a FAQ about this that discusses and indicates all I've said here.

If an XON is missing due to data corruption, the communication is stopped until eternity. With 4e4th we started with XON/XOFF, but then we discovered that CR is a better synchronization command. Our 4E4th-IDE works with both, XON/XOFF and CR from the target. The speciality of 4e4th is that the prompt gives some essential information to the IDE, especially the base, to synchronize input and downloading constant values using the current target base.

I was a bit confused by Elizabeth Rather I believe posting under her married name in another forum? I now know. I too want to wish you the best! I do pray for guidance for your healers and grace in your recovery. Clyde
