I won't argue with that. If someone wants to learn to program, Win32Forth is a pretty nice setup. But if they want to learn embedded programming, then forth on an embedded target is not a bad way to go at all. Or they can still work on a PC and target the embedded device. -- Rick

ANSII-Forth doesn't say anything about GUIs, but Win32Forth delivers the fundamentals with some examples, ForthForm, and the Form Designer - to use these you need to have knowledge about Windows. VisualFORTH makes making GUIs easy: only a few mouse clicks, and you get a working GUI, as exe-file, connecting your buttons to Forth words. Other Forth versions may have the possibility to make GUIs, too, but it is time consuming and a lot of special programming knowledge is needed. > Simplest way to publish the source is probably just put a download link > on your site. So much work to do.

It would be very nice if you could explain this. Out of the box it surely doesn't run under Debian-wheezy and wine (always immediately crashes at touching the "start-bottom"). And I'm quite sure it will not run at all on ARM-platforms!? That doesn't sound feasible without a lot of work. The 4e4th IDE has a fancy Windows GUI using the Forth API supplied by Win32Forth.

I can't imagine it's really sooo tied to Windows/Intel - nowadays kids often have an ARM-powered tablet and nothing else. And also: educate someone to use (only) Windows not seems a good idea to me, we are not in the nineties anymore! Couldn't the 4e4th-IDE use some platform-independent library like gtk or fltk?

HaveANiceDay, Thanks for your interesting questions and your research concerning domains! I guess I have to explain how the 4E4th-IDE came to life. I have written this story several times, and to make it short, please read http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/anton/euroforth/ef12/papers/bruehl.pdf I am not a systems programmer, I am an electrical engineer who got in touch with Forth thirty years ago, and I started writing VisualFORTH after ten years of waiting in vain for it to show up from somewhere. Three years ago I had a project which I could only realize with the MSP430, then Michael ported CamelForth onto the MSP430 and I started writing the 4E4th-IDE. The problem with software nowadays is that you can download anything for everything, and people don't see the work behind it. Only Forth gave me the chance to do this work, but different Operating Systems have different Forth versions (only professional Forth versions run on different Operating Systems), and I am familiar with Windows XP - I am glad that my VisualFORTH programs are running on Windows 7, too, thanks to the great work of the Win32Forth team. To have a 4E4th-IDE on a different OS, it first needs something like VisualFORTH on that OS, because the 4E4th-IDE has been developed with VisualFORTH for the Graphical User Interface part.

To run a Windows-Program under wine is often a hassle, more so if drivers are involved, and the Windows-way of doing things is so cumbersome and awkward to me.... If I only read about all the things you have to do before getting up and running a Launchpad! On Linux (both, ARM and Intel, of course) you only do once something like "apt-get install mspdebug"- and then plug in the Launchpad, ready to flash it, debug it, do what you want, all in less than 30 seconds (no drivers, TI-tools, elpotronic-flashers... needed at all). But there is no such easy-to-learn/easy-to-use Terminal-IDE like yours....it's a pity. And to LEARN the emacs-way is quite a bit harder, I think. I will wait until you'll make available your free sources and than have a look, maybe there is something nice and useful besides the "visual" stuff that seems so tied to Intel/Windows/Win32Forth. Have a nice day!

There's lots of similar boards already. I understand the cost. Hardware has a lot of non-recurring expenses which only become insignificant in larger quantities. Actually, I see pretty reasonable prices. My concern is that the board is not designed to actually do anything very useful. Rather than roll your own hardware to support a language, when the hardware does nothing special to support that language, Forth could have been promoted more efficiently and likely more effectively by simply doing the same software development effort for existing hardware which has an established following and lots of peripherals. Arduino, RaspberryPi and Beagle Bone Black all would be very interesting platforms for a good Forth development project. Did I miss something about this project? -- Rick

The RPi and BBB boards use enormous A-series application processors that are basically miniature PC's. They can run Gforth under Linux and the like. This board looks closer to the Arduino scale, or alternatively the Freescale Freedom series, STM Discovery, Tiva Launchpad, Teensy 3.1 (pjrc.com), McHck (mchck.org), etc. But as indicated, there are already lots of boards like that. I'm kind of interested in the Rfduino (rfduino.com, a Cortex M0 board with built-in Bluetooth) for a gadget I'm thinking of building. At least it has a unique hardware feature.

How many Trinkets do you think > adafruit.com sells? Don't know, don't care. I build hardware for a living and it is hard to build low quantities of anything for under $100 and actually make a buck. I can't really dispute anything you've said because one man's "moderate" quanities are another man's "mass" quantities. I'm talking about 100 to 1000. Every time I build 100 boards it costs me about $100 a board which contains some $40 in semiconductors. I suppose the parts cost on Simon's boards is much less than $40, but that just means his costs are in line with mine I think. >> Forth could have been promoted more efficiently and likely more >> effectively by simply doing the same software development effort for >> existing hardware which has an established following > > Right, I feel the same way. Yeah, there is a thread on this in the SVFIG mailing list. I don't want to post there because I think I would be perceived as a downer (while here I can rant and no one notices, lol). But really, what is the point of this set of hardware? Certainly the indigogo listing doesn't explain it. >> Arduino, RaspberryPi and Beagle Bone Black all would be very >> interesting platforms for a good Forth development project. > > The RPi and BBB boards use enormous A-series application processors that > are basically miniature PC's. They can run Gforth under Linux and the > like. "Enormous"??? They are certainly not going to run from a 9 volt battery very long, but I think you overstate their "enormity". In theory they can run Gforth, but I seem to recall it takes some know-how to make that happen. I have an rPi someone gave me and if I could get it to run gforth I would be very happy. I'm talking about having a forth all set to go where it just has to be installed. To the best of my knowledge that has not yet happened. But then I am totally not familiar with Linux, so maybe that is just not how Linux works. I would actually prefer to see a Forth that doesn't run under an OS, but that may not be too practical if you want to use networking. Also every peripheral would need to have a new driver written for it. So a native Forth may not be the best way to go for all projects. > This board looks closer to the Arduino scale, or alternatively > the Freescale Freedom series, STM Discovery, Tiva Launchpad, Teensy 3.1 > (pjrc.com), McHck (mchck.org), etc. But as indicated, there are already > lots of boards like that. The scale of the board is not the issue. The question is what does this board do that the others don't? I don't mean in terms of features necessarily, I mean what exactly is the point? How is this board different? The *BIG* advantage of the boards I mentioned is that there are *TONS* of peripheral boards all ready to go, just add software support under Forth. :) -- Rick
