The skills required to get rich don't include being smart.  You get rich by 
being an enterpreneur, and be greedy (smart people usually aren't)!  You 
also need a thick skin (which smart people usually don't have), and you must 
put your enterprise above everything else, like family, friends, and 
hobbies.  That's again something smart people won't do.  What's the wealth 
worth if you can't enjoy the things you value most, like the three above?

Wealth doesn't just come out of thin air.  Wealth is the byproduct of
creation and work.  The U.S. works longer hours than much of the world.
Capitalism monetizes those creations.  Capitilism lifts people
out of poverty.  "A rising tide lifts all boats" is attributed to
Pres. John Kennedy.  Well, freeloading from the government sinks all
"boats".  That's the problem America has today with a certain racial
minority that refuses to do much work, and another racial minority who
are in our country illegally.  This drags everybody down into poverty,
a "receding tide".  They're sucking our system dry.  Now, that's
not a reason to be racist, but when the government refuses to do
anything about the citizens concerns and lets the problems fester,
then racism naturally occurs.  These groups damaging America is
no different than the family that can survive comfortably with
two children, barely manage to survive with four children, and are
destitute, living on the streets with six.  They'd like to get rid
of one or two kids.  Americans would too.  It's whats known as a
related-rate problem in mathematics.

Bernd rewritting history again.  Germany has Nazi's, Neo-Nazi's,
fascists, anarchists, and attempted to exterminate *ALL* the Jews
via war...  The German government has even refused to pay restitution
fees to Jewish on $1.35 Bil. of recently recovered artwork stolen by
the Nazi's from the Jews, etc.  So, even your government is still racist!
I guess it's acceptable for you to say the US has racism since there
is no one left in your country for you to be racist against.  Your
country *KILLED* them all!  Clearly, unlike your country, we don't
get to kill all the people we don't want here.  So, do you recommend the
U.S. deport all those here illegally, and also return descendants of
slaves to their country of origin?  It's clear to Americans that Germans
believe that Jews don't belong in their country.  What if the U.S. took
the same stance and said those two minority groups don't belong or have

So, how do you fix the problem?  You make people work.  Some view that

wealth disparity.  If there is none at all, then your economy is

Modern societies are too compex and interwoven (ever heard of 
globalization?) to fit into crude templates any more.

Let's be honest.  Power lies with the rich who, if they don't run government,
influence it.  If the rich can get away with filling their pockets at the expense
of others, they'll do it - by any means possible.  In my country a well-known
businessman and 'philanthropist' was caught out in an illegal price-fixing deal
with competitors.  It ruined his reputation (for a while) but not his fortune.
(We still love people with money despite their misdeeds).

I understand no-one in the U.S. has gone to jail as a result of the scams
which triggered the global financial crisis and put many folk in the U.S
and elsewhere out of work.  Who is called upon to bail countries out of
the mess which the rich inflict?  The lowly taxpayer.  Every time.

Why do people use the term 'wealth' when they mean 'money'?  Perhaps
because it avoids the negative connotations - avarice, greed, indulgence,
self-importance.

Money may not be the root of all evil, but it sure helps :)

True, but you can also say 1) they have access to such deals,
and 2) they're they only ones who can afford such deals.

Not all wealthy people are that amoral.  Some actually do quite
a bit of good.  There are many wealthy in the U.S. who produce
food at a low cost.  There are also many who've become wealth by
questionable means who turn around and donate that wealth to social
causes.  Do the ends justify the means?  No, but if they're a
philathropic billionaire, it sure helps.  Of course, their
questionable activities still harm good people in the process.

That was because the U.S. government was complicit.  They set interest
rates on mortgages so low anyone could get a mortgage.  It was unreal.  It
was like a wild west gold rush here.  I had some friends who had no credit
history whatsoever get huge loans to buy houses.  It looked like a bubble
to me a decade earlier.

Well, in recent times in the U.S., there has been a separation between
the concepts of 'rich' and 'wealthy', due to a popular book on wealth.
'rich' are those who are paid exceptionlly well for doing a job.  They
have to work for their money, e.g., rock stars, movie starts, sports
stars.  'wealthy' are people who own businesses and other assets that
generate income or capital gains (price appreciation on physical assets).
They don't have to work for a living.  Their assets generate income or,
gains which can be converted to income.

Well, my apologies for poking "it" on this thread. What Gavin (his real
name) realises is that his annoying troll habits make him less than
popular (he'll claim not to care as he likes attention) but much more
easy to identify (now here he may care since anonymity is important to
most trolls).

He's left so much electronic spoor over the internet that I can tell you
his full name, his age, his degree, year and alma mater (the same year
that he started spamming on his university account), his parents and
siblings and where they live (dammit, you could do a complete family tree
in minutes as he's got a very unusual surname), his address and where he
lives, what his apartment looks like, his failed business and its
turnover, what he looks like, his interests (wow...); the list goes on. 

What is true is that he lives near the beach. The rest of the "published
author, six figs" stuff is overblown fantasy. Given some of what I've
found out I'd hazard a guess that it's driven by a personality disorder
and easy access to the internet.

It took all of a few minutes to find out about Gavin, using only Google.
You should try it on your own digital identity; depending on your point
of view, you'll be amazed to scared witless, depending on how much you
value your privacy.

It's easy for anyone to create an e-Book: published author.

It's also fairly easy for a single male, who earns an above average
salary (>$65K), who has a low cost of living (<$10K), to accumulate
six figures in savings, in just a few years, after 33% taxes.  If they
put off marriage after college until 28 to 33, they could have $400K+
in the bank, or maybe a little less due to college loans.  If they invest
well, they could have nearly $500K, exceptionally well, $1000K.  In more
expensive markets, like California or New York city, they would have to
take exceptional measures to control rent or housing costs, perhaps
renting a room in a private house in California, or a 300 square foot
micro-apartment in NY.

It's the marriage, expensive vacations, the hospital births, the children,
the children's college fund, the mid-life crisis sports car, the wife's
out-of-control shopping sprees, the healthcare bills, the mortgage,
the second mortgage, the retirement accounts, the divorce, the alimony,
the child support payments, insurance and job loss, etc that drains the
savings, i.e., American "family" life or the "American dream".  Irony.

It varies, but to take Gavin as an example, here's what I do.

Start with something you know absolutely is him; say, a Google post or
several. From there you can get everywhere else. 

Don't assume that posting addresses are meaningful. They can be proxied,
from usenet mailers, and email addresses of a really good troll are often
spoofed. But they can be used to connect up personas, since trolls with
multiple personalities often make mistakes about what accounts they use.

Look for matches of email addresses where information is "leaked" out. So
Gavin sometimes makes a mistake and posts to the same list (in this case,
I got several from comp.lang.lisp) with two email addresses. That links
them. Searching on those can reveal more, and clues in the text add
colour and information. Bodybuilding, lives near the beach, is an
American are the obvious ones, but then you stumble across the fact that
what looks and sounds like a Gavin post that contains information about a
degree he claims from university X around such and such a date. 

Search for his name on the publically available registers for universiy
X; there you'll turn up a year book with Gavin's degree and helpfully, a
full name. This also turns up, with an imaginative search on the user
part of the standard univeristy email address, some homoerotic spamming
from his university email account to a list devoted to discussing
geodisic domes. He signs off with his full name. The list moderator
threatens to inform the university, but it's not clear if he does from
the material I found.

Gavin at this early point in his troll career (illness?) is writing full
sentences and punctuating; a gradual slide into lower case (or at least
not knowing where the caps lock key is), less punctuation and increasing
incoherence seems to be a progressive feature of the last decade or so. 

Use the full name to narrow the search. Usefully, his middle name and an
unusual surname limit the number of people with that name. This gets his
parents and family members; they live in another quite distant state. It
also provides you with his current general location (US county level) and
his age. That matches well with his graduation date.

A PDF turns up during this search; Gavin has written to his local council
about parking. The letter is classic Gavin. It's fairly well written and
has far fewer spelling mistakes, but it has a narrative section that
you'd recognise instantly. It gives us a full address in the right state.

We're on track to find out a lot more with this information. We have his
full name, age, address and academic qualification.

Now with his address, use Google Maps; there's his front door. Real
estate agents are useful; if you relax the address slightly, you'll get
room sizes, pictures, valuations, sales and rentals for other apartments
in the same property. They're small, but they appear to have a communal
swimming pool.

Gavin also operates with a largish number of pseudonyms, one with
transsexual overtones, and one with political name; it refers to
democrats rather than republicans, but I suspect the phrase might be
derogatory. These often appear in IRC logs and more information that
confirms it's the right person. These lead to membership of an internet
tea party organisation, again with his full name and address. They also
lead to web sites for body building (he has a reputation as a troll there
too) and his own Google website that consists of quite insane political
ramblings. The style is much like the stuff here, with as many as five or
six posts a day. There's also a large number of links to pornography.
Other blogs under other pseudonyms contain similar material. Most have
been abandoned in the last couple of years.

Some have user profile pictures associated with them. Searching Google
for matching images shows that Gavin commonly uses pictures of a random
cool dude in a sports car that he's borrowed from elsewhere. One,
however, has no matches, and is a low res picture of what I think is
Gavin in front of a PC from about 5 years or so ago. Another is a single
picture taken outdoors, but it's not clear that it's the same person.

California business records turn up a business with his name and
registered at the same address that hasn't submitted accounts in two or
so years; when operating, the declared turnover was less than $50K. 

And so on. It's knowing how to jump from place to place with the little
hints in each part that makes Google a powerful tool. Literally, I spent
around 10 minutes; about the same amount of time it took me to write
this. A distinctive name helps, but even a common one like mine is just a
matter of time. I've done it on myself; the results are scary. 

Basically, Google knows in parts everything there is to know about you.
You don't have any privacy, so don't expect any.
