The minimal eforth primitives assume very little cpu capabilities,
e.g. not even multiplication.  So make sure there are primitives for all
that.

Make sure to mark that inline.  Maybe it's being taken care of though.

The compiler might be optimizing that out.  It is good about stuff like
that.

Are you using the highest optimization level?  You might experiment with
some different ones.

I thought the underlying compiler for the 8266 Arduino setup was still
GCC, so can't you use GCC -S to look at the assembly code?

Is the speed of eForth on the 8266 a real practical issue for something,
or are you trying to make it faster on general principle?
