Adding the guarantee of 2s-complement arithmetic does not break a
standard program (and since AFAIK there never was a Forth system for a
non-2s-complement machine, no non-standard program, either), so this
is not a good example.
Blocks might be a better example, but it will take quite a while yet:
They don't make that much sense on today's flash-based storage and on
terabyte hard disks, and what we currently do is to provide an
emulation layer on top of file systems; do small systems (their
justification) still use them? So they may fall completely out of use
over time, and if so, blocks can be destandardized at one point in the
future. But, OTOH, keeping them as optional wordset does not hurt, so
I don't think anybody is in a hurry to get rid of them.
