And yet, VFX has lotsa hooks, SwiftForth has a relatively elaborate
hook system (halfway to the present proposal), Gforth, AmForth, WF32
etc. have recognizers. Why did they not follow your idea, and let
those who want more recognizers write another parser?
1) You would need to rewrite the whole parser to add another
recognizer. That's not the simplest way to do it.
2) Writing another parser does not compose: If I write a parser that
recognizes locals, words, integers, and FP numbers in order to get FP
numbers, and you write one for recognizing locals, words, integers,
and dates, how do I get one that recognizes locals, words, integers,
FP numbers, and dates? I have to start from scratch. While the
systems in VFX and SwiftForth are not great on composability, they are
better.
3) How do I get my shiny new parser to be called by QUIT, INCLUDED,
LOAD, and EVALUATE? That's probably not a problem for a system
implementor (just use carnal knowledge), but how does somebody who
wants to write a portable program do it?
