That has not stopped "optimizing" compilers from miscompiling before,
so there is no reason to assume they will stop at "volatile" if they
see a way to improve benchmark results by optimizing it away. E.g.,
the purpose of memset() is to overwrite memory. Yet compilers
"optimize" memset() away.

The standard is a red herring. The problem is the attitude of the
compiler maintainers.
