Quite, so you agree that they aren't equivalent.

POD types are more common in C++ than you realise.

Now where did that rule come from?  Using memcpy to copy structs is 
anything but idiomatic C.  I'm sure the compiler can do a better job of 
copying a struct than a call to memcpy would.

You (as the C++ standard library does) provide a close method.  If the 
result of fclose is important, call close(), if not let the destructor 
take care of it.  Most C code I've seen ignores the return from fclose....
