#80882 — "Tether"?? What is it and how might I achieve it??

Subject"Tether"?? What is it and how might I achieve it??
Message-ID<vnfaat$2rmjd$1@dont-email.me>
This post is cross-posted to both alt.comp.os.windows-11 and
alt.os.linux to increase my chances of getting an answer.

Some of you may have read that my HP 6730b Dual-boot Win7/Linux Laptop
has died/is dieing so I've resorted to this HP Win-11 Desktop that I am
tring to get up and running.

However, in updating the Win-11 OS and all the bits and pieces of this
HP 24-cr0002a 24 All-in-One N100 8GB/256GB Desktop Computer, I've used
up all my monthly Data allowance ..... which doesn't get renewed until
about 20 Feb so, until then my download speed is limited to about 35kB/sec.

However .... (as I was trying to drift off to sleep last night), I
thought "What about if I use a PrePaid chip (like I use in my
Mobilephone), could I connect via the chip in a USB dongle (after
disabling my Wi-Fi)??"

Back in the day (2000 - 2010'ish), I used to connect via a USB dongle so
it must be possible ....

But, then I thought .... If I can connect like this using a chip in a
Dongle .... when I connect my Mobile Phone (via USB to9 recharge my
phone) to my Computer can't I effectively use my mobile phone, using
it's Data allocation, to do my Web Browsing??

Is this what 'they' call "Tethering"??

If so how, on this HP Win11 Computer, do I disable Wi-Fi and then enable
USB Tethering??

TIA.

Assuming you have run out of bandwidth to use at home, if
I was in a temporary lurch, I would head to the Public Library.
For example, our central branch has 30 or so PCs, and a good
Internet connection, and can be booked for one hour sessions.
The computer reboots between sessions, wiping out the previous
customer URLs and accessed information. The computer is "clean"
at the beginning of each session. If you need to do research,
that's how you do it on a budget.

    What to Know

First, connect your Android or iPhone to your computer with a USB cable.

From the Settings app on your phone, turn on USB tethering (Android)
    or Personal Hotspot (iPhone).

Note: Depending on your mobile carrier, you may be charged a fee for
creating a hotspot. Check with your carrier if you're not sure.

Open your phone's Settings app and go to

Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering (Android) or
         Cellular > Personal Hotspot (iPhone).

Tap USB tethering to tether your Android, or
Personal Hotspot to set up your iPhone as a hotspot.

Your PC should now be able to access the internet through your phone's internet connection.

This suggests that the phone port, puts out a declaration that it

Note that phone data is expensive, every bit as expensive as the
satellite data you ran out of. Be careful with the pricing!
Extensions past a bandwidth limit, can be billed in "blocks" of bandwidth,
and are especially expensive if you are roaming and traveling
in a foreign country. The bill can be a couple thousand bucks,
even for the simplest things like allowing a phone to "use data"
while in the foreign country. Let alone actually tether to
your laptop for example.

Even if a SIM is on offer, I can't see how anyone is going to
offer "gobs of data for pennies". This is not a service like
making phone calls, where the call duration is short. If I were
to give a person a tether for free, they'd leaving it running
24 hours a day, and download movies until the phone caught fire :-)

Wifi can be disabled with Airplane Mode, which disables the radio(s) on the PC.

And on Windows, you can try this, and on the next reboot, it won't sniff
around the existing interfaces for a network connection. That is just
changing one of the services in services.msc to disabled.

   sc.exe config netsetupsvc start=disabled

On Linux, this would be managed (at least partially) in Network Manager.
Usually on the Task Bar area somewhere, or in the upper-right corner.

  Paul

Thank you, Paul, for your detailed explanation. I've saved it so I can
re-read it at my leisure.

Your comment about phone data being expensive is noted .... but, as I
get a bit of data included in my PAYG plan, I might as well make use of
it if I can. (Normally it just expires each time I renew the $35 per
month phone contract.

I'll see how I go!!

Thank you.

You can, in the computer, configure the connection as "metered". Windows
will then not do computer automatic updates through that connection.

Good point, Carlos, but, as I suspect it was the computer updating
everything that got me in this pickle in the first place, there will not
be any System updates required for some time!!

windows 11

Settings : Network and Internet : Ethernet

    Metered Connection       ON/OFF  <===

*******

There are some grim statistics in there, but like Canada,
there is plenty of wide open space, and getting that all
hooked up costs a fortune.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_in_Australia

This is a moderately good way to get the Internet, but
it still requires a tower close enough to you for the signal.
It's sorta like 4G or 5G, only for a fixed location, and
uses a different frequency than the cell phones use. And
because some of the microwave frequencies can be a bit higher ones,
it can be affected by weather (snow, or heavy rain). The Wiki
calls this "Motorola Canopy".

I pay a similar amount for my cell phone and have a GB of data. That
seems like a lot, but if you are downloading drivers, programs, updates,
etc. you will go through that in a second.

Turn it on and check the settings, essentially name and password.

Assuming you mobile does tethering the most difficult bit may be finding
it in settings!

On my Windows 10 laptop I then click on the Network icon on the icon
section of the Taskbar and choose the WiFi hotspot. In Windows 11 you may
need a large torch and somebody with a pair of latex loves to find it of

Jeff, normally I use Wi-Fi from my Desktop Computer to connect to the
Modem which then actually connects to the Phone's Landline. But this
Wi-Fi -> Landline -> ISP's account is the one that I'm trying to get
around .... by using my Mobile Phone's data allocation to keep my
Computer "On Air".

OK. The route I set out replaces your modem/landline with with you mobile

Nowadays most mobile phones supports wifi hotspotting, you enable it in
the phone and then your devices connect to the wifi network the phone is
providing and you then have internet access.

Other more costly alternatives would be a 4G/5G router that works in the
same way as your normal router but uses mobile network instead of land line.

Then if you happen to have the right type of Asus router, they can
support tethering, you just connect the phone to the USB port and do
some config changes...

Oh. Hang on. Are you (and Jeff) suggesting that, rather than my
computers Wi-Fi function connecting to my phoneline Modem, it should
connect, via Wi-Fi, to my mobile-phone then make use of its Internet
function.

I hadn't considered that capability .... I figure if I had my
mobile-phone plugged into a USB socket (re-charging the phone battery),
my computer, having no other option (because I had turned off its Wi-Fi
system), would use the phone's Wi-Fi.

Something to think about. Thank you. And, if my Plan includes a GB of
data, as knuttle says his does, I might be right until the new "Internet
Month" starts in about three weeks.

yes, it tend to be "simpler", of course you will be cut off from your
intranet.

As I don't know how your setup looks like, but I assume that some of the
devices you have are wired connection to the route, those will of course
be inaccessible.

I would recommend you to check that out and don't leave your computer
hooked to the phone wifi hot-spot all time, there could be background
stuff that runs and could easily use up the phones allowance.

It says that specific models that supports 802.11ax (wifi6) and has a
firmware version
- Firmware between 3.0.0.4.388.23000 and 3.0.0.4.388.29999.
- Any version beyond 3.0.0.4.388.31900
- Any version beyond 3.0.0.4.386.69019

On the Android phone enable the "USB tethering" option and plug it into
the routers USB connector and it should be it.

On iPhone go to "Personal Hotspot" and enable "Allow others to join"
plugin the phone to the routes USB port and on the phone you will have a
question if you trust the computer, press "Trust".

I do think I had similar functionality in my old Asus N66U, so I would
check your router manual if it supports usb tethering.

Landline phone-base unit is physically plugged into the Modem Box. That
phone connects Wirelessly to a second Phone handset.

This Desktop Computer connects to the Modem Box via Wi-Fi.

It's this Computer that I want to, temporarily, connect to the Internet
via my Mobile phone, either

1. directly via Computer USB lead to Mobile phone Mini-USB socket

or

2. via Wi-Fi to the Mobile Phone

or

3. via a Mobile Phone chip in a USB Dongle

Ignore the Tethering thing. Is is possible, but needlessly complex for
what you want to accomplish.

Instead, create a 'mobile hotspot' on your smartphone. It's normally
in the Settings part for connections (Wi-Fi, Bluetooths, Mobile
(cellular), etc.. If you specify which brand/model and Android version
you have, we probably can give more specific instructions.

When setting up the mobile hotspot, you give it a name (like for your
broadband) and password.

Next, you can connect your Windows 11 'desktop' to that mobile
hotspot, just like you would connect your laptop to a public hotspot,
for example at Maccas.

The result is that your Windows 11 'desktop' talks to your smartphone
via Wi-Fi and your smartphone talks to the Internet using mobile data
from its monthly (?) data bundle.

FYI. I use that setup when we're traveling in Oz. (You're in Oz,
aren't you?)

This is the right advice. Do this. Some phone providers charge extra for
hotspot service, so check on that, but otherwise this is the way to go.
