There is a search going on today for the Marek Novotny Linux scripts for VPN drop protection on the Windows 10 newsgroup today: SUBJ: VPN for connection that randomly drops? URL: http://www.pcbanter.net/showthread.php?t=1104224 <- Google doesn't archive Usenet Win10 NEWS: news://nntp.aioe.com:119/alt.comp.os.windows-10/ Message-ID: <pe6hci$jdm$1@dont-email.me> The question is whether Marek's wonderful network-testing scripts to test for VPN being still established and then to drop the network of the VPN fails, will work on Windows 10 in the new Bash Shell. Anyone know? His Github account listed in the scripts doesn't seem to be working. -- This is a cross-platform question about Marek's Linux scripts.

Marek's scripts were all specifically written for GNU/Linux and the GNU Bash shell. The scripts will most likely run on Windows with Bash installed, _but_ Windows with Bash is still not a UNIX system, let alone GNU/Linux, so the chance is big that the scripts would bail out at some point due to a certain file not being where it is expected to be, or perhaps because of the difference in nomenclature between certain aspects of Windows and UNIX. An example could for instance be that Windows does not use the traditional UNIX /dev filesystem, even though I believe it has something equivalent for that. But insofar as I know Marek's scripts were never adapted to keep the Windows filesystem hierarchy into account. The point is therefore that the only way to make sure whether the scripts would be fully functional on Microsoft Windows would be to download them and execute them. > Anyone know? > His Github account listed in the scripts doesn't seem to be working. I was friends with Marek and we talked quite a bit about personal stuff. Among other things, he told me that he was having severe health issues ─ concretely, he had a blood clot in one of his lungs, and his doctors were quite worried about that, not to mention that the blood thinners he had to take brought about their own problems. He had been rushed to hospital several times already. My last communication with Marek dates back to early October 2017. After that he suddenly went quiet. There were no new posts from him on Usenet, there were no more emails, his GitHub account was terminated, and the two email addresses I had for him bounced. Even though there has been some discussion in another newsgroup about it ─ in which a couple of idiots, badmouths and bullies came up with an explanation which was totally unfitting Marek ─ the general consensus among those who've interacted with him and who were in regular contact with him via the internet is that there is no other explanation than that Marek has passed away. He was only 49 years old. I'm afraid that's all the information I can give you, both on account of Marek as a person and the scripts he wrote. -- With respect, = Aragorn =

I can not denounce Steve Petruzzellis for being annoyed but, really, I don't grasp why he posts here now that he gets what this place is. Steve Petruzzellis is more interested in conversations as done in a moderated venue and free environments make him want to puke. This is something you know nothing about. Who does NOT know that this kind of hokum is Snit's modus operandi, not the MO of Steve Petruzzellis? It's all just nonsense... the flooding, the sock puppets, the writing of word-twisted nonsense, the tantrums... the puffy red eyes and willingness to show how butthurt he is over being kicked from the playground for shitting in it again... just what Snit does ;) Who are you even speaking to? A few posters in another newsgroup have postulated the notion that Marek would probably have had someone tidying things up for in the evetn that he were to suddenly pass away ─ a will of some sorts. Presumably, the executive of that will would then have contacted GitHub with the request of terminating the account. One of the email addresses I had for Marek ─ his main address ─ was also linked to a domain that he himself had a lease on. The services for that domain would then likewise have been terminated with Marek's passing. Mind you, this is just speculation. We're not really sure on the details of how all of this has gone down. :-/ -- With respect, = Aragorn =

Thank you. Much appreciated. We will all miss Marek's kind and helfpul script-writing generosity. I've been on Usenet for as long as anyone here, where only a few years ago did I embrace Linux, where Marek kindly helped me MANY times, as I am the "vpn user" who first asked for scripts, where, he voluntarily wrote the first set, which we *all* tested together, for years, even as he did have his first unexpected health episode during that testing time period. His many "vpnget" and "vpnctest" and network-killing scripts are "still working" so to speak on a Ubuntu laptop of mine whose fan died, so I "can" resurrect them, but, as is my habit, I had always summarized the final scripts after editing them in the a.o.l archives (for exactly this purpose of reuse). Marek helped me even when not writing scripts, as I'm the user who asked about Opera privacy enforcement, where Marek was the only one on this newsgroup who, at first resentful of what he considered a troll, then went on to be the only one who figured out the valuable secret to wiping out your previous "identity" on Opera in both Linux & Windows. Marek was a quick, resourceful, and always helpful person, who will be remembered, in so much as these archives are preserved in our history, as one of the best Usenet citizens - always giving back - to the team - for the common good of the tribal wisdom overall. RIP Marek. I salute you.

He was only 49 years old. The problem with this "theory" is that if he *HAD* passed away suddenly, his GitHub account and email addresses would not have automatically terminated. They would still be working, unless a family member had the access (and cared) to disable/close them. That doesn't seem likely to me. If he had gotten news that he didn't have much time left, he could have closed those accounts himself, in preparation, but....... it would seem likely that he would have communicated his prognosis to some people so they would know why he was dropping out. Especially to such a "close friend" as Aragorn. Eh? I believe he got tired of the rat race, and "went off the grid" or "pulled the plug" on the electronic world. Perhaps he's living quietly and peacefully in a log cabin, deep in a nice cool forest somewhere. -- "Ubuntu" -- an African word, meaning "Slackware is too hard for me". I ended up spending a few hours today solving the original problem. I, like Marek, always give back to the team, so I posted the solution here: <https://groups.google.com/d/msg/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/56KgMK6n090/xdRDoSKFAQAJ> There were more than a half-dozen solutions in the original thread: <http://www.pcbanter.net/showthread.php?t=1104224> the first two of which failed miserably, but the third solution worked fine, which was a DOS (not Bash!) batch script, which basically disables the gateway (default being 192.168.1.1) when you're on VPN. That way, if the VPN drops, there's no network until you re-enable the gateway. a. You run the vpnkill.bat script and press 1 to disable the gateway b. If the VPN drops, nothing happens since the gateway is disabled c. When you want to get back on the gateway, you press 2 The DOS script worked as well as Marek's Bash script did on Ubuntu. I tested it on three different public VPN services to be sure. What that means, in summary, that Marek Novotny's Bash shell scripts work fine for Ubuntu to kill the network when the vpn drops, and this vpnkill.bat DOS shell script does the same thing for Windows (in a completely different way). Marek's method was to constantly and quickly (he spent a LOT of time improving the speed!) test the network and then quickly kill a given list of processes by name if the VPN dropped. This new DOS batch method seems simpler, where it simply disables the normal gateway (192.168.1.1) while VPN is running. The source DOS batch file is located here for reference purposes. <https://www.liquidvpn.com/billing/dl.php?type=d&id=49> -- Note this has nothing to do with DNS leaks - which is a different topic.
