Our (TOPS-10 development's) experience is SOUP which was a horrid headache
and we never really used it as a tool unless forced to do so. We had manual
procedures which depended on time dismension being only oone direction.
The weekly edit "merged" all changes to a source by having the programmers
write the changes on the listing with an IBM card on the LHS of the listing
to indicate an edit on that page. Monitor edits were done on Tuesdays
(it was my favorite job of my life to do a monitor edit). The human editors
which were from Tape Prep would take a module and edit the entire listing.
When an edit was done, the IBM card was placed on the RHS of the listing.
When all the edits were done for a module, the human editor would
COMPILe the source with F, S, and xxxxx prepended to the COMPIL command
and a /CREF switch. CREF would be run on and a new listing of the module
would be PRINTed. A FILCOM of the old, new source would also be printed
and put in the back of the black binders along with the new cref listing
of the edited source. The old listing would be placed in the blue binders.

Heh...remember binders? I have one of the blue ones used for monitor
edits here.

Only the edits marked in the black binders were allowed. Tape Prep
was trained to not do any other edits even if bit gods like JMF
or TW tried to charm their way. I don't recall JMF nor TW ever
trying. Honoring the rules was important for edit control.

So [going back to your description of a branching] might have
problems putting the changes into the repository because of
editing conflicts which happened after the branch was created.
For example, a bug was found by you and someone else. SE's
fix went in during the time you were working on your branch.
Somehow, your fix and his fix would have to be resolved
when you submitted your branch cold to the repository. It
might not be much of a problem if the code fixes were identical
but would be a problem if they differ. Typing and coding
styles are as unique to humans as fingerprints.

Yep - git is pretty good when it comes to resolving conflicts
by itself. Two (or more) people can change the same file as
long as they change different sections of the file. However
you are right there can be conflicts. At merge time you
will see the conflicts and you can choose to keep your change,
keep the change on the server, or overwrite with something
new.

Any language for which it is not can't be handled by gcc.

> kind of compiler language about 8 years ago with requirements which
> aren't provided by current compiler languages. (But I don't
> remember the details of his spec.)

There are undoubtedly languages which won't fit the gcc or llvm
internal models well, I'm not at all sure how well Prolog would fit for
example. Any that don't can't use the toolbox - that's what they get for
being oddballs :) OTOH if some bright spark can see a way to tweak the
internal model to make it sufficienly expressive then there just needs to
be a blitz on the backends to accomodate the extended model and suddenly
the language family is supportable.

Yes - but it can use a whole bunch of general purpose tools to help
with the job. As one old programmer said "All assemblers are the same once
you work out what the registers are for" - it's not that simple really but
there's a germ of truth in there, at least for anything likely to be a
target for gcc there are patterns and themes that can be abstracted into
support code.

> Now I'm wondering if disk architectures need
> to be considered when building a compiler. I just know enough
> about system configurations these days.

Not really - gcc does provide a generic option to connect the
phases with pipes instead of intermediate files, and it does rather depend
on the 'a file is a sequence of octets' model so anything off the wall in
that respect is going to be tricky.

> Is there any way you can backup the entire edit history of the
> compiler yous use just in case you lose internet access?

Yes, the master repository for gcc is under subversion which is a
centrally managed system like CVS but they export a read-only git version
which anyone can clone at which point you have the whole history locally,
if you feel so inclined you can start a fork from the point you think they
missed a golden opportunity/screwed up royally/dropped your favourite
toy/whatever and release it as long as you DTRT WRT the license terms.

> BTW, thanks for answering my ques tions which were not expressed
> well. :-)

It makes a nice change to be nattering about computers - and in
case anyone moans it's even on charter! All this stuff was in gcc when I
first met it well over twenty years ago. There that's the title changed and
it's on topic too. It'll never last :)

You don't understand modern source control. There is a edit trail
for the entire collection (that's the final C in GCC - Gnu Compiler
Collection).

Remastering isn't required in modern source control systems, which
allow you to recreate the project at any point in time (by date or
by version).

Each compiler in the collection can be considered to be a combination
of a front-end (language specific) which produces a language-independent
parse tree, a global optimizer that optimizes the intermediate tree
and a back-end code generator (target processor specific) that actually
generates the object code based in the intermediate tree (and performs
certain target specific peephole optimizations).

So, the C, COBOL, FORTRAN, et alia front-ends all generate an intermediate
tree that is processed by the optimizer and then passed to the target-specific
back-end. The interfaces between the passes (they're not really passes, but
you can conceptually think of them that way) are standard so any front-end
can generate intermediate trees that all the back-ends will be able to
process and generate code for.

When you build a compiler, it can be built either native (generates code
for the host OS/processor it was built with) or cross (generates code for a different
target processor/OS). I use both forms daily.

It is very well organised. This is one suite which compiles
c, c++, fortran, cobol and maybe some others. They built an
internal representation, and then massage it for optimisation
and code generation.

Yes, Barb, there is a log of every edit committed to the source
control system gcc has been in since, if not day one, very early.

I downloaded the code and unfortunately ran out of disk space on the antique
dual core laptop.

There's a pile of directories under the "common" directory for each cpu
architecture.

Configuration is handled by a configuration program that tries to autoconfigure
the compiler based on the architecture and os...

You have to build it to appreciate how much work went into automating the
process. First time I saw this was the rn news reader in '86.

There are shell level tests for standard unix program utilities and libraries
which build a config file. When I used to build this stuff in 86 or so
I think I did all the configuration editing manually... back in the 2.8 or 2.9
days IIRC.

Anyway... I've added an external USB drive to this $30 Thinkpad and I'm going
through the build again. Takes a while.

I've done enough design of build procedures and packaging to have a glimmer
of appreciation ;-).

The TOPS-10 monitor builds could be canned. We would ship TOPS10.RELs
which had all the rels except for the site configuration dependent
modules which required a compilation of COMMON, COMMOD, COMDEV, S,
F, and ..... (poof! went the last filename). Then the RELs of
these assemblies could be PIPed together with the appropriate TOPS10.REL,
then LINKed to generate the EXe.

You are painting too rosy picture. Recently I compiled
gcc from sources to get cross compiler targeting ARM,
more precisely Cortex-M. Using natural arguments to
configure I got compiler that worked on simple programs
but more complicated ones were crashing. After some
debugging I realized that one of compiler support routines
were assembled as 32-bit ARM code, but Cortex-M only
supports Thumb so processor were crashing on invalid
opcode. After some fiddling with configure I found
options which resulted in correct Thumb code.
You may call this user error (apparently
problem is known to gcc developers and they do not
think there is anything to fix), but such problems
are almost impossible to resolve without debugging
at machine code level.

More generally gcc has quite a lot of bugs. It is
quite possible that all tricky fragments of your
programs are in gcc bug database so gcc developers
make sure they compile correctly. But I have seen
enough gcc bugs to have somewhat limited trust.
If you manage to find new uses not covered by
existing bug database (not easy since database is
large), then you are likely to hit bugs.

And there is a lot of development effort spent
on gcc. Most of my coding is with different
(not C) compilers and then hitting bugs is
much more likely.

Perhaps.

Or use a different compiler.

I learnt a lesson from a PPOE which had _really_ high monetary values
hanging directly on the correctness of complex computations.

Do TWO systems. With public specs, and public comms protocols, and
have verifiers running on all external (and some internal) interfaces.

And don't share a single bit of hardware or software between the
two systems.

Nor have the two development teams interact through any private means,
have all communications public.

We can actually get there today, with Linux and BSD and carefully
selected hardware and tools. Gives the bugs a run for their existence.

In many large mainframe applications, there may be hundreds of
COBOL or 4GL programs, but still a few assembler routines for
specialized purposes.

In some cases only assembler can do a specific task, such as
inquire for certain info from the operating system. In other
cases COBOL could do the task, but assembler can do it a lot
faster and simpler.

As previously mentioned, a bare bones COBOL program to copy a
file will take longer to execute than a utility (e.g. IDCAMS
or SYNCSORT); presumably, those utilities are written in
assembler and can do things faster than in COBOL.

At my last place of employ, the mainframe batch scheduler used an assembler
"user exit" to determine program privileges. It was written in assembler
because it was called millions of times a day. Unfortunately, when we
came to amend it, our last assembler (or I suppose I should write
Assembler) programmer had retired. We got him back on a consultant
basis to do the work.

For safe programming practice enabling simple calculations, suitable for
all ages outside the range of, say, 10 to 75, it is sufficiently easy to
write a JavaScript sand-box in an HTML page. The basic idea is to show
the result of the value of a textarea in a form - eval(Frm0.TA1.value);.

/js-quick.htm> does that, etc. etc.; you will need a local copy.
/gravity0.htm#JC> is simpler; please use a local copy.
NOT PI-TESTED.

There must be at least one JavaScript engine in an Internet-supporting
Pi distribution; with that, it might not be too difficult to make a
browser support HTA coding and/or an equivalent to Windows Script Host,
both of which support general un-sandboxed coding.

Generic "school machine" assembler is enough. I learned one such...

Much the same as the PDP8 which formed the teaching example
of electronics at Essex in 69 - 72. Not much call these days to
design core stores. Half-select noise, anyone?

Used in computing in 1974 when I was there for a year. They had a 'paper'

One nice thing about the PDP8 documentation, a convention that we seem
to have lost these days, is that you also got a complete description of all
the I/O at the register level and how to drive it.

True. Although it was very simple I/O. DMA and interrupts were fairly

But once that you have such principles under your belt, then all I/O
becomes simple for you; might take some winding of the handle and
a little more time to program, but remains conceptually simple.
