Our (TOPS-10 development's) experience is SOUP which was a horrid headache and we never really used it as a tool unless forced to do so. We had manual procedures which depended on time dismension being only oone direction. The weekly edit "merged" all changes to a source by having the programmers write the changes on the listing with an IBM card on the LHS of the listing to indicate an edit on that page. Monitor edits were done on Tuesdays (it was my favorite job of my life to do a monitor edit). The human editors which were from Tape Prep would take a module and edit the entire listing. When an edit was done, the IBM card was placed on the RHS of the listing. When all the edits were done for a module, the human editor would COMPILe the source with F, S, and xxxxx prepended to the COMPIL command and a /CREF switch. CREF would be run on and a new listing of the module would be PRINTed. A FILCOM of the old, new source would also be printed and put in the back of the black binders along with the new cref listing of the edited source. The old listing would be placed in the blue binders. Heh...remember binders? I have one of the blue ones used for monitor edits here. Only the edits marked in the black binders were allowed. Tape Prep was trained to not do any other edits even if bit gods like JMF or TW tried to charm their way. I don't recall JMF nor TW ever trying. Honoring the rules was important for edit control. So [going back to your description of a branching] might have problems putting the changes into the repository because of editing conflicts which happened after the branch was created. For example, a bug was found by you and someone else. SE's fix went in during the time you were working on your branch. Somehow, your fix and his fix would have to be resolved when you submitted your branch cold to the repository. It might not be much of a problem if the code fixes were identical but would be a problem if they differ. Typing and coding styles are as unique to humans as fingerprints. /BAH
