Yes - but it can use a whole bunch of general purpose tools to help with the job. As one old programmer said "All assemblers are the same once you work out what the registers are for" - it's not that simple really but there's a germ of truth in there, at least for anything likely to be a target for gcc there are patterns and themes that can be abstracted into support code. > Now I'm wondering if disk architectures need > to be considered when building a compiler. Not really - gcc does provide a generic option to connect the phases with pipes instead of intermediate files, and it does rather depend on the 'a file is a sequence of octets' model so anything off the wall in that respect is going to be tricky. > Is there any way you can backup the entire edit history of the > compiler yous use just in case you lose internet access? Yes, the master repository for gcc is under subversion which is a centrally managed system like CVS but they export a read-only git version which anyone can clone at which point you have the whole history locally, if you feel so inclined you can start a fork from the point you think they missed a golden opportunity/screwed up royally/dropped your favourite toy/whatever and release it as long as you DTRT WRT the license terms. > BTW, thanks for answering my ques tions which were not expressed > well. :-) It makes a nice change to be nattering about computers - and in case anyone moans it's even on charter!
