I have three gmail accounts, but I'd not use them for anything important. I was at my first ISP for nine years, I've been at my current ISP for ten, though at this point I'm not actually getting access from them, just a shell account, a webpage and email. But I keep paying after getting DSL for continuity sake. I post from the Ottawa Freenet, I give them a $20 donation once a year because I'm not actually getting internet access from them, but they have good Usenet. I've had membership there since about 2003, so that's another way to get an email account that's longstanding but separate from internet access. Though at this point I'm not sure how many freenets still exist. But free is free, it's not paid for by big advertising like so much of the internet has become "free". I don't count on the Freenet for email because I've just never given it out to people other than on Usenet, but if I had to, I'd drop the second ISP and just keep the email at the Freenet. Sadly the days are gone when the internet was seen as a revolutionary space, so now everyone flocks to the big ISPs (and flips at a moment notice if they don't like the service) and gives everything to commerce, when there are still smaller ISPs one can dig out, or things like the Freenet which at least started in the days when such things matter. Another way is to purchase your own domain (e.g. hancock4, $5-15/year depending on what top-level domain it is), and have the domain registrar (I like namecheap.com) forward mail to the mailbox you're actually using.

After going through a couple of small ISPs I wound up at surfnaked.ca - who could resist an e-mail address like that? Through various acquisitions it would up belonging to Uniserve, but they were wise enough to retain the original domain name in addition to their own. I wouldn't want to go to a huge conglomerate like gmail, for various reasons that others have already mentioned - plus the fact that staying with a smaller independent provider is more in keeping with the original spirit of the Internet. When I went DSL I signed up with Telus (the local telco); I could receive e-mail through them, but I hung on to my surfnaked account and just use Telus's SMTP server for posting. -- /~\ cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid (Charlie Gibbs) \ / I'm really at ac.dekanfrus if you read it the right way. I run my own home business email server, but when away, neither my work or ISP systems allow me to send email through their SMTP servers when outside their networks. So, I finally got a gmail account ONLY to send emails when on the road. It works, but I don't know how well it would work as your only email system. Jon

I have one gmail account that I check multiple times, I use it to get basically junk mail (all those stores trying to lure me in by offering deals). I rarely get spam there. But the other two get a lot. Actually, the reason I got one of them is long in the past, but there is a constant flow of email from I don't know where. Near as I can tell, someone went around and gave out the wrong gmail address, so is started getting it. It's all either mailing lists or someone sending out to their list of contacts. That gets spam, but not that much. The third is the one I gave my sister, and there's a trickle of real email there. But, the spam is amazing. Not only lots of it, but I swear it's related to my sister's use of gmail, since there is a lot of dog and health related stuff. Almost relevant, but I sure didn't ask for it. So I suspect gmail is more careful with accounts that get used regularly, but that's speculation. I hope I am too small a fish for them to be interested in. I gmailed my son that I was having trouble with an uncontrolled dog. Next visit to gmail, I had ads for pet kennels, etc. I wwould hope its just an automaatic search for special terms, (Kinda like Eliza) -- greymaus . . ...

I don’t use the gmail web mail much at all tho, normally use a just one email client on the PC and their app on the phone and tablet. I do use google very extensively indeed for both my primary search engine and google maps, and don’t get any ads at all from them in either of those. The main place I do see ads which are clearly the result of some recent google activity is in facebook. Not very intrusive at all. They openly admit to processing your email for the purpose of targeting advertising. If the NSA (or anyone else) wants to read my email they can either catch it in flight (most of it at least appears to go direct from the senders MTA to mine) or hack their way through my firewall, find my mail server and hack their way into that - or send some gardae round with a warrant.
