And the desks were not sturdy. Standing on one was impossible, they tipped over easily. Albert Bigelow sailed "The Golden Rule" into a US atomic test site in 1958, or at least tried to. They were stopped while in Hawaii. Earle Reynolds and his wife then "Phoenix of Hiroshima" into the test site at the Bikini Atoll, getting arrested in the process. Well, the problem is, NOBODY has much of an idea what a modern boosted weapon would actually do to a populated area. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were quite small devices, and pretty much everything in the modern arsenal have 10 to 100 times the thermal yield. But, clearly, it would be WAY worse, and extend over a much larger area. That was certainly true for the 1960's, too, as the Russians quickly figured out how we built our boosted and two- stage devices. With the more powerful devices, except for hardened sites, the only thing that could help you is distance. Even 50 miles away, you don't want to be looking in the direction when one of these things goes off. Jon

Sure, but ducking and covering under the desk in a decent solid building does avoid that problem. And its still worth doing because its better than doing nothing. And completely academic anyway, the worst that might happen now is one of the nukes held by say Pakistan might conceivably be fired by some rabid islamists at India and I don't believe that even that would see those two fire everything they have at each other and even if they did, that would only be a problem for those who happened to be tourists there anyway.

There were the drills, yes. They made about as much sense as the TSA
"security theatre" today, although it is possible that the authorities
didn't realize that (at the time, there weren't many bombs, so few
schools would be close to epicenter). Or maybe the authorities did
realize that, but were going for the theatre aspect ("nothing to worry
about").

Its unlikely that they would have had drills at all if they wanted
people to believe that there was nothing to worry about.

Had there been an attack, the security drills would've saved many
lives. Obviously, in a nuclear attack those at or near ground zero
would be in trouble. But those on the margins would be saved by
even basic precautions, such as being in center hallways rather than
in a classroom. Even being under a desk instead of a seat would've
been helpful in a marginal situation.

Sitting at PS114 in Brooklyn, New York -- you knew if they were hitting
the New York area including Fort Hamilton (still active base), Floyd
Bennet Field (Naval Air Station). No amount of duck and cover
was going to save my life if they dropped thermonuclear devices near
the Brooklyn waterfront.
I don't think the Nike missles would've been effective against missiles,
but they were built to protect against the USSR in the late 60's.
I live near a number of these sites that were in effect until 1974.
To get back on topic... Interesting to think that Ken Olsen was
involved in the Whirlwind Computer and the Sage air defense system.

Maybe not but they'd have tried like Hell, and one thing about those old
Nikes, close counted--they had 20 kiloton warheads.

IIRC, a themonuclear device dropped on NYC would pretty much kill everyone in it.
