She was one of many, both historical and contemporary. But I am surprised he used her name, since she is not well known to the general public. Heck, lots of computer people know nothing of computer history (nor care) and probably don't know her.

I think more people than you imagine at least have heard of her, since she was
profiled on the CBS program "60 Minutes" in the 1980s, and she appears in
textbooks on the history of computing aimed at the grade schools.

Not by all, but maybe by more than the "insiders". If she was the only example, then he was talking about a "long time" ago. In the context of others, then it's less shocking. But I suspect he could come up with lots of current innovators, but we'd not know them. They may be innovating, but they aren't known. Some kid doing some science fair work is "innovating" and that's a good thing, but it doesn't mean it will change other things. And Obama had that kid with the clock in the white house, the one that got in trouble at school, I'm not sure that kid was much of an innovator, and the way it was presented I'm not even sure how capable the kid was, and that's all gone now since the kid and his family moved away from the US. There was an author in the hobby electronic magazines that was quite prolific when I started reading them (or rather, some years before, I read my way through as many back issues as I could get ahold of). He also had a book, tube era, of projects that I kept taking out of the library. Decades later I found that same book at a book sale, and grabbed it. But then maybe five years ago, I saw his name in a thirties radio handbook, which was a surprise because one thing he'd been prolific about was transistor stuff, and often there was a split, old tube men didnt' make the transistion to solid state. So I did a search, something that couldn't have been easy to do as a kid, and found out that he was black. We wouldn't know, the magazines didn't run pictures of the authors, usually didn't give any details of the authors. But he got to be out there at a time when blacks weren't so visible, because he was writing. He also had something to do with the 1N34, the classic very early germanium diode. So it made me wonder. Just like women science fiction writers who took a man's name, a black writer or programmer wouldn't be identified as black unless you met him, or someone who did talked about it. It seems hard to believe that in this day and age such information never passed out, but I can imagine there may have been some famous black computer people who we just never realized were black. Michael

There may well have been. Since I do not care about skin colour
so I would not likely say anything if I did know. I expect that there
are many others like me.

Well, if I knew what he looked like, then skin colour is relevant
for identification (just as hair colour, etc. are). I am not going to
make a fuss about it though, and in other cases, I would not care.

There was a `hacker' group around the time of "The Legion of Doom", that were composed of coloured teenagers. Can't remember how that came out. If people people object to `hackers', I would enter a list of groups that started as `someidiotic name', then switched to a `SENSIBLE NAAME' as they became mainstream. Nope, cant remember where I saw that list. -- greymaus . . ...

My daughter the neuroscience grad student has mentioned being a bit conflicted about "women in science" awards. As she puts it, any award is nice, but those have a sort of "good job! -- for a girl" ring to them. > There was a `hacker' group around the time of "The Legion of Doom", > that were composed of coloured teenagers. Understandably.
I am just a little more skin-colour-sensitive than I used be. I
was to meet a student to tutor at my uni. He described himself as
about 6'6", and he spoke without an identifying accent. We were to
meet at the main library. Due to history, this is a bit ambiguous. I
was looking at people trying to spot him. Finally, I decided to try
the other library. We met in the middle as he had been at the other
library. He had gorgeous, dark brown skin. Since then, I am liable
to ask about skin colour.

I know the feeling. Role models are important, too, but yes,
that "for a girl" ring grates.

Personally, whatever makes well-suited people come work with me, I'm all for it. If someone has the talent to become a good programmer but needs a particular role model to make the decision, then please bring one in! /Jorgen -- // Jorgen Grahn <grahn@ Oo o. . . \X/ snipabacken.se> O o .

No, because that was what I asked in the first place. Fish and
water? I would not usually describe myself as a white though I am
one.

We thought we had beat that to a pulp in the early 70s. In the 80s, that idiot von Savant preached that girls couldn't do math. /BAH
