It (Russian) has a pretty complicated grammar, to the point that noone speaks truly correct Russian outside the instututes of Literature. The Communists have also contributed a lasting legacy of units, measures and correct physical and chemical terms to the colloquial language. This is unique. A Soviet/Russian receipe does not have cups or spoons. It has grams and liters. This applies all over the language. English was the language of the politicians and philosophers that won the world for democracy. It was not primarily a language for science. -- mrr

It's true that they conjugate verbs, like the French and many others do, and they also declense their nouns, like the Germans also do. Since this never prevented the Germans from having science and technology - and, in fact, the ancient Romans did both those things too, and this didn't stop them from becoming pre-eminent in the ancient world, I can't see this as a problem. I mean, doing that stuff is the _norm_ for Indo-European languages. It's English that's the odd one out, having lost its inflections and cases due to being battered around by foreign invasions and the like. John Savard

It still coins words for scientific concepts, but because it does that from its own language stock, there's always the chance for confusion, or at least unfortunate associations. And yet, we see in practice that they've had no problems. Japanese, on the other hand, has borrowed words from English - and the Kanji characters it took from Chinese each have two pronounciations, one corresponding to the ordinary Japanese word with the meaning the character represents, and another to the borrowed Chinese word used as a combining form. As though, in English, 人 were pronounced either "man" (the Kun-yomi pronounciation) or "anthro" or "homo" (_two_ On-yomi pronounciations, since while Japanese has only Chinese, combining forms in English are routinely made from either Latin or Greek)... or if 六 were pronounced "six", "sex", or "hex". But because Communist ideology, unlike the teachings of Nazism, was a threat to the wealthy and powerful in the United States, it took Pearl Harbor to bring the U.S. into the fray against the Axis, while the U.S. defended Korea against the Communists, which would have been something like the U.S. defending Czechoslovakia - or even the Republicans in Spain. Of course, the little matter of Soviet spies stealing the secret of the atom bomb helped ignite the fuse for McCarthyite hysteria - but that doesn't explain the Red Scare of the 1920s. The thing is, though, even in the 1920s, it was clear enough that the Communist regime in Russia was made up of megalomaniacal tyrants bent on power and steeped in cruelty - _not_ of genuine friends of the downtrodden working class. But the fact that the right wing used the real menace of Communism as an excuse to persecute people for advocating racial equality, or for promoting accurate teaching of biological science, or for other activities related to social justice, naturally led some people to the mistaken conclusion that the claims of a Communist threat were all lies. The demonization of political figures (just like today) took a terrible toll on the nation's ability to _accurately_ assess and deal with the threats of the Cold War. Thanks to nasty politics, real threats were disregarded and stupid things caused panic. We lost the service of good people were driven from office by false accuastions. As a result, both lives and treasure were wasted in fighting the cold war. Its legacy continues to this haunt to this day, such as from nuclear waste dumps from cold war nuke production. Modern politicians employ the same poison techniques as used then. There was a Nevada Senator, McCarren, who was as much as a witch- hunter as McCarthy, though he worked more behind the scenes. A biography of him shows that he hurt many lives and did a lot of damage.

That was true in spades of Vietnam and they were right about Vietnam. Sure, but it wasn't diversity of ideology that was the problem with that. No country will ever be united about something like the cold war. Quite apart from those who wanted to see communism succeed, there will always be pacifists and those who don't see any point in the US getting involved in what doesn't affect the US directly. That's why it took Pearl Harbor to get the US involved in WW2.

The USSR was the primary target of the Germans, and threw everything they had against them (materials and bodies).
