When I was five and in Denmark in 1965, there was a nearby house with a bomb shelter. When I thought about it years later, I assumed it wsa a "fallout shelter", but then even later, I read that such things were common in WWII in Europe, not so much protection from a bomb blast as a place to hide in case bombs were dropping and the house collapsed. That made me realize the bomb shelter was most likely a remnant from WWII, which was only 20 years in the past at the time. I never went in, but it was a relatively small surface thing. Michael

In Britain we had the Anderson Shelter: http://primaryfacts.com/506/anderson-shelter-facts/ Very common and there are still a few around. Pity my Granddad didn't have one when they bombed his greengrocer's shop! My Grandmother survived because she was down the garden cutting cabbages for the shop. -- Stan Barr plan.b@bluesomatic.org

That was kind of fantasy war planning--the Air Force would go off in the morning, win the war, and be home in time for dinner. In the real world it never worked out that way. By the way, have you ever read the Doc Smith Lensman stories? "Triplanetary" has a description of the National Guard responding to a presumably nuclear attack that while it's exciting enough to read and might have made sense in 1934 is just crazy today, but would fit right in with that mindset.
