I went to a Peter Schickele concert 7 or 8 years ago. The concert was
a bit late starting; finally someone came on stage and apologized that
Peter Schickele had been injured in an accident and wouldn't be able
to appear. Just then, the stage door burst open and with a cry of
"Wait! I'm here!" Peter Schickele rolled on stage in a wheelchair
at high speed, pushed by a nurse who stopped him so abruptly that
he tumbled out onto the stage. The concert then preceded normally -
or about as normally as you might expect. The first half highlighted
works by PDQ Bach; I had the pleasure of seeing him play the lasso
d'amore that he made famous on his old recordings. ("Viennese cowboys
twirled their lariats over their heads with such great speed that a
musical pitch was produced.") The second half consisted of pieces
composed by Schickele himself - quite enjoyable.

Hmmm... last time I went to a PDQ Bach/Peter Schickele concert was 30 years
ago. Seems like his performance style sisn't changed much. I was
disappointed by all the slapstick stage gags and there seemed to be a
shortage of musical gags. (I have several PDQ Bach records from 70's so I
was well acquainted with what Schickele could do.) My music teacher thought
that perhaps he was aiming at an audience less knowlegeable than me, and
that a lot of people wouldn't get the musical jokes. (Talk about setting the
bar low.)

Another one in Hamilton had a "Stage Hand" come on and ask just how long it would take to get from Toronto airport. He reluctantly decided the show must go on and sat down to little more than chop sticks. Sirens outside, door burst open cop in hot pursuit. Schickele running crashed into the piano on stage and reached up first with one hand the seconds later the other one and opened the concert. w..

One good friend's PPOE had several mainframes in a server basement, with everything redundant; UPS, network, disks and databases with failover at several layers, and redundant cooling. To conserve the compressors they ran a little staggered so that one machine in practice took all the load, while the other kicked in at +2 degrees. Switch the settings over every three months, do an emergency test every 6. My friend was woken up with lots of machines going down during one of these tests, they were way too cold. Like -40. The emergency test had included a procedure for running on one AC machine and loop only, and running that one flat out. Which would have worked sort of well when the mainframes were there. Except, this time they were not. Well, they were still there, but being shut down, powered down and being dismantled while the Alpha servers down in a corner of each room were taking all the transactions. They didn't use several hundred kilowatts, barely some tens. So the temperature plummeted, and only stopped when the AC alarms went off at -40. By which time several servers had done a controlled shutdown. >Indeed, I wonder what a modern office consumes in a/c to cool down the PC that sits on >everyone's desk, plus all the support network gear. Estimates are that the Internet and the associated servers and fixed machines went past the airlines in total energy usage in September 2012. At 7% of our total energy use. In addition you have all the handhelds and the mobile networks. By now it should be around 9.5% of total measured energy use. Facebook alone uses around a gigawatt. Apple many times that. -- mrr

P.S. From Buchholz: The IBM 701 had 4,000 tubes. 60% were type 5965, and 15% were type 5867, both twin triodes. (Remaining 25% diverse types). The 5965 was liked because of the "large inter-element spacing between the grid and cathode".

There was an IBM ramac machine dumped in a scrapyard in the mid 60's and loads of other electronics and aviation related kit from Greenham Common USAF base near Newbury (UK). For a young electronics and radio geek, just like a sweet shop and spent hours there stripping out parts. Most of the tubes in the Ramac machine were 6211's and still have a few somewhere, as well as dozens of wire ended neon lamps. It was a modular design, with ~1" square x 9: long modules with a single tube at the handle end, then resistors and caps etc behind that and finally a B9A plug into the backplane. Interesting days indeed :-)... Regards, Chris

Would anyone know the difference between the 5965 and the 5867? Since both were twin triodes, why wasn't just one type used?

Actually that would be a 5687 vs a 5867. And apparently the IBM 701 was initially designed to use only 5965 tubes. The 5687 tube has twice the plate dissipation rating of the 5965, and typically would be operated at twice the plate current. I suspect the the output tube in the 8-tube modules was modified by replacement with a 5687 to provide better noise characteristics. -- Floyd L.
