One good friend's PPOE had several mainframes in a server basement, with everything redundant; UPS, network, disks and databases with failover at several layers, and redundant cooling. To conserve the compressors they ran a little staggered so that one machine in practice took all the load, while the other kicked in at +2 degrees. Switch the settings over every three months, do an emergency test every 6. My friend was woken up with lots of machines going down during one of these tests, they were way too cold. Like -40. The emergency test had included a procedure for running on one AC machine and loop only, and running that one flat out. Which would have worked sort of well when the mainframes were there. Except, this time they were not. Well, they were still there, but being shut down, powered down and being dismantled while the Alpha servers down in a corner of each room were taking all the transactions. They didn't use several hundred kilowatts, barely some tens. So the temperature plummeted, and only stopped when the AC alarms went off at -40.
