I went to a Peter Schickele concert 7 or 8 years ago. The concert was
a bit late starting; finally someone came on stage and apologized that
Peter Schickele had been injured in an accident and wouldn't be able
to appear. Just then, the stage door burst open and with a cry of
"Wait! I'm here!" Peter Schickele rolled on stage in a wheelchair
at high speed, pushed by a nurse who stopped him so abruptly that
he tumbled out onto the stage. The concert then preceded normally -
or about as normally as you might expect. The first half highlighted
works by PDQ Bach; I had the pleasure of seeing him play the lasso
d'amore that he made famous on his old recordings. ("Viennese cowboys
twirled their lariats over their heads with such great speed that a
musical pitch was produced.") The second half consisted of pieces
composed by Schickele himself - quite enjoyable.
