This does not help when the current developers acknowledge that to fix bugs
and to otherwise get a product to compete well would take a major overhaul.
This is one such example (and a common one at that):

It is not as if there is no value to open source code - much can be great
and is a part of or even the whole of many great programs. But to pretend
that being open source somehow makes a program great or makes it compete
well is just insane.
