Many people DO benefit from open source software - on Windows, OS X, and
Linux. Sure. As far as needing to be open, though, there is also closed
source software on each.

Desktop Linux is the most tied to open source and the least competitive and
the ones that offers the least choice... thousands of distros and dozens of
DEs all tied to an ecosystem which is very limited.

Still, Desktop Linux can be had for no cost - and for those with older
hardware or otherwise who have hardware but no OS, it is amazing. It is
truly world changing to have what it does offer for free.
