#16623 — "New version available" notification?

Subject"New version available" notification?

I use both Firefox and Thunderbird. Firefox always notifies me when a
new version is available, a feature I like. Thunderbird does not. Is
there a setting somewhere to activate such a feature? Thanks!

In Thunderbird,
Settings >> General >> Updates (near the bottom)
where the options are:
  ( ) Automatically install updates
( ) Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them

The second option above will notify you but leave you to make the
decision to install.

BUT...

If you are running Linux and your Thunderbird comes from your
Linux distro, then updates may be disabled in Thunderbird
because updates will be handled by your distro's update manager.

On Windows, some people have used a Policy hack to disable updates.

Not in my regular experience on Win 11/currently TB 138.0... and now
expecting 138.0.1 after Ant's advisory.

I've always had to ask Help > About Thunderbird to establish whether
the availability exists for my sys/language preference. That's with
(X) Check for updates.

I think it's just that they (both Firefox and Thunderbird) do not check
for updates on their own very often. For both of them you will get your
updates much quicker if you manually go to About every few hours.

Also it may be that they both only ever check when they are starting up.
So, since some people leave Thunderbird running for days on end in the
background, that may be why Thunderbird seems not to tell them about
available updates.

But as the OP points out, Firefox 'does' present a friendly drop-down
nag telling me an update is in the wings. This morning (Canadian PDT)
I knew about 138.0.3... and installed it.

Checking this NG, I knew from Ant that TB 138.0.1 should be
available... but it took several hours of humming the Beatles' 'Help'
before it appeared. <g>

If you're so avid for the newest hot shit, switch to the TB Beta- or
Daily-Channel.

Someone who calls himself "nobody". I don't recall which of the various
nobodies here in this newsgroup it was.

I already have "automatically..." UNchecked, and "Check for..." Checked.

I am running Windows 10 64-bit pro.

When I click on Help->About Thunderbird, it shows that I am on
128.9.2esr and an update to 128.10.0esr is available.

This is better than nothing, but not as good as the automatic
notification which Firefox provides when an update is available.

In any case, thanks for your suggestion.

I am using Betterbird 115.13.0-bb30 (64-bit) and don't see this option
anywhere. Does BB work differently?

Looks like BB works differently for updates because it's not in BB 128
either.
