I think it's just that they (both Firefox and Thunderbird) do not check 
for updates on their own very often. For both of them you will get your 
updates much quicker if you manually go to About every few hours.

Also it may be that they both only ever check when they are starting up. 
So, since some people leave Thunderbird running for days on end in the 
background, that may be why Thunderbird seems not to tell them about 
available updates.
