I already have "automatically..." UNchecked, and "Check for..." Checked. I am running Windows 10 64-bit pro. When I click on Help->About Thunderbird, it shows that I am on 128.9.2esr and an update to 128.10.0esr is available. This is better than nothing, but not as good as the automatic notification which Firefox provides when an update is available. In any case, thanks for your suggestion.
